Updater hatage

hiya

anyone mind coping their Coh.Patch file to a webspace or if you can zip the file maybe mail it to me?, I'm tired of this updater, it just reset itself and isn't letting me download the file

it's the 1.6 gig file

I'm sooo close to just giveing up again...

Unfortunately, it won't help.

After that Patch file gets downloaded, it gets expanded into all it's little pieces (it's kinda like a ZIP file) and then it gets removed after everything is verified. So more than likely, no one HAS that file.

Oh, and you'll never be able to send a file that size via E-Mail.

I guess that means its a waiting game! :( The lenghty downloads has become most peoples #1 gripe about CoH/CoV. They(NCSoft) need to have the option for high speed delivery of these large files.

I'm less concerned about my waiting for 14 hours for a download than I am about "that other guy" who's on 56K waiting weeks for it to download. There should be something you can order from the website for like $5 where they send you the patch on CDs or a DVD.

thanks all, I'm just really upset

I been fighting with tech suport since june

this updaTE has been trying to download on my system for over 2 weeks streat now

I can't really do anything else becus i'm trying to download this

it's so upseting, I just wanted to play again, but it seems I'm never gonna beable to

it's not 14 hours, it's more like 30 for me ... again...

I'm just tired of the constant annoyance, I'm on a freeking Cable modem, and I have no problems anywhere on the net, but COH update won't let me get the files

You guys do know you can bypass/disable the updater right? It shouldnt be used as a permanent fix but it does get allow you to play without waiting days.

I'll add it to the tip section since so many seem to be having problems with the updater. The link will be posted here in just a sec.

I have the shortcut named Bypass, but the game said i have the wrong protocall, I figure that means too much has changed from publish 4 to now, and i need the freeking downlad that BTW is back to 40 hours away...

WHY does it hate me sooo

nothing else on the net hates me asmuch as COH updater

( they clame it's not them, but I know better )

I guess I'm just one of the few that are forsaken, dismissed becus we arn't of the privlaged, forgoten, based on location, or just given rotten luck to have to go thru a bad router station, one that is not of their ISP, or of CoH/V, I belive that I am of the few that are lost

I decided to not post this as a tip since I wanted to try it with CoV before I did. However I dont have a CoH/CoV account and Im not totaly sure how it is set up in terms of paths and files. So Ill post here how to play City of Heroes by skipping the updater and hopefully someone can post some info on the file structure and desktop shortcuts for CoV to apply this fix to get it to work.

How to bypass the updater (City of Heroes)

- Right click on the desktop icon and select properties

- Replace whats in the Target field with "C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\CityOfHeroes.exe" -project "coh"

*Change the location to the city of heroes folder as needed
or just ad -project "coh" to the end with a space before -project

- Click Ok

- Launch the game from this new shortcut

the shortcut for bypassing does work, but you need a current program ( game update), to play

I'd like to state, for the record, that there IS a way this transfer method would work. What you need, to be certain you're up-to-date, is to have someone zip and send you the majority of the files in the City of Heroes folder. To be specific:

-The 'piggs' folder
-CityOfHeroes.exe
-CohUpdater.exe
-CovUpdater.exe
-dbghelp.dll
-NxCooking.dll
-NxPhysics.dll
-NxCore.dll

Once you have all of those, place them into your City of Heroes folder and overwrite all your existing files. (To be safe, delete all the above files from YOUR folder BEFORE transfering the new ones, in case you have out-of-date, non-existent files.) Then, delete Coh.checksum. This will force City of Heroes/Villains, upon the next successful connection to the patch server, to re-verify, at which point it will notice "Oh, wait.... I AM up to date! Go me!"

If, after doing that, you cannot connect to the patch server still, you can at least bypass it as mentioned above without fear that you're lacking content/images/etc.

P.S. If I recall correctly, the updater itself changed between Issues 5 and 6. If that's so, your problem may more be an out-of-date updater than anything else. I recommend trying the new updaters before downloading a multi-gig archive from someone else. I just happen to have them...

There might be a work around for not having the latest update. Try this,

- Make a back up of Coh.checksum

- Open the original Coh.checksum with Wordpad (making sure the 'Always use this program' box is not checked)

- replace the top two lines of the file with the following

Version 4
Build "10.20051116.6C"

- save the file and test the game
......................................................

If that doesnt work delete the modified Coh.checksum file and replace it with the back up. Then try the following,

- Open the Coh.checksum file and copy the build number between the quotation marks in the second line.

- Open the registry editor
click start ~ run ~ type regedit ~ click OK

- Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cryptic\Coh\

- Find where it says CurrentVersion to the right of the window

- Right click and select modify

- Paste the number from the Coh.checksum into the value data

- Close the Registry editor and test the game

umm before I try to edit something ( I'd probally mess it up)

is there a chance to get a copy of them files you mentioned?, I tryed them updaters, same deal, good news, I seem to be getting a little better connection, 20K/sec, over the 15K/sec yesterday

Instead to keep it simple I'll set up my server real quick and send you a link to download the updated files. It will take a long time to DL them but at least you will get them.

Hey vix listen i had huge problems with the updater too, this went over a month.

I went onto the coh boards and read what they had to say about the updater not working, ...the thing at the end of the normal update ur drivers and whatnot was that problem with your ram will affect the updater big time.

After downloading a ram checker from microsoft, found out one of my sticks of ram had gone to complete pot.

Replaced that and now the updater and coh/cov work wonderfully =)

So maybe try that.

On Protector:
