What's in a name.

I am curious as to how everyone comes up with the in game names for their characters.

Naming my characters is probably the longest part of creating a new one for me.

When I do it I will sit and put random sounds together in my head till I have something that kinda sounds like a name. For instance, my elementalist:

Terves Vaenth

There wasn't any real ryhme or reason behind it, I just started putting letters and sounds together till I came up with something that sounded like a decent fantasy character name.

Re: What's in a name.

This particular name is from an old Sega Saturn game, but most of my names I just pull out of nowhere randomly. I say no to thought and preconsideration, spur of the moment works for me :)

Re: What's in a name.

All of my characters' names are cleverly obviously not-clever bad attempts at humor. For example, Amn Unk, Anon Imous, Goen Tukilyu, Intyrli Brylynt, and Sagary Azell are the 5 pve chars I've made. Before I finished the game with my monk and war, I also had a pvp character called En Sain.

I also use a similar naming convention for pets, but I always base it off of the master character's name. Goen Tukilyu's pet wolf, for example, was Hilkilyutu, while Anon Imous' pet Stalker is called Eyed Entified.

Isn't it wonderfully clever how not clever my character's names are?

Re: What's in a name.

For me, I tried some on Latin and Italian, hence maximus, Excelcis, etc.

By my 4th character, I tried something to match the profession/character. So for my minion master, sadistic mortician. It came to me when I saw and read what taste of death did, oof. Dominae for a domination mesmer, etc.

Sooooo.

Hmm, who's making the coffee? Anyone?

Re: What's in a name.

My first guy was a ranger and everything i tried was taken so finally i started looking around my room or inspiration and saw hybrid theory my favorite cd so i took hybrid and well ranger hunter and that was how that one was made. My next was an ele and planned to use fire magic so mage of drahonfire was good. The others kept dragonfire but i changed it so it was kinda sysnamon of the profession. They were dragonfire templar a warrior and dragonfire sirena mesmer.

Re: What's in a name.

I had all my creative juices flowing when i came up with the name for my first character....Mega Awesome. Other names i came up with either had 'Mega' in it, or a part of the guild name. I just try and come up with names that people will know me by, or ones that i think might be funny.

When i make a pvp warrior, i use the name Frenzy Heal Sig Ftw. Every good warrior knows that is the best combo in the game.

One of my favorite music group was and still is Godspeed You Black Emperor. So since Half-Life and the so great Team Fortress Classic, I use Godspeed in the name of my chars in game... :

Godspeed The White (Mo/Me)
Godspeed the Black (E/N)
Godspeed The Cursed (N/Me)
Blade of Godpseed (W/R)

:)

Re: What's in a name.

I either go with someone from my Yi family in Sims 2 *blush*
It has over 30 generations, so lots of names to choose from :-)

Or I browse through the Encyclopedia of the Celts for inspiration.
That's wehre stuff like Ban Sidhe, Salie Sidhe and Ban Nighe come from :-)

If that doesn't work, go browse through the rear section of Silmarillion. Lots of Tolkien's characters haven't been used yet as 90% of the people who use one really only saw the movies and go with those.

Re: What's in a name.

Kind of funny on my names. Most of my characters have Bob in them. Got this from Counterstrike where my code name was Killer Bob. It stuck at lan parties so when I entered everyone would say hey Killer Bob is here.

Some of my in game names;
Killer Bob Campbell
Necrobob
Sponge Bob Sq Pants
Torch Bob Tanker
El Scotto Bob
Ranger Bob Campbell

etc., etc.

Later,
Scott2310

Re: What's in a name.

Has anyone ever seen a ranger with 'Legolas' in their name? I think not; its such a rare name amoung rangers. People should use it more. Ditto for Aragorn among the warriors. Think of the creative power behind those minds that thought to put either of those in their character name. God knows, I don't have that kind of creative power, but thankfully some ppl do and awe us with thier imaginative powers.

(In case you can't tell due to lack of sound, I am being sarcastic).

Re: What's in a name.

Hi there and I would like to start off by saying: I think naming your char is one of the most IMPORTANT things you can do! urgh you see too many people going round with names like "The K I L L E R" or "I KILL NOOBS" or my personal favourite "Sir Killalot." *claps* genius. A name says so much about what kind of person you are whether you are a witty and sophisticated nerd with FAR too much time on your hands *shifty eyes* or if you are, well,..not.
Personally, most of my names come from snippits of Tolkein, of course the grammar is attrocious and the spelling altered to what i think is best, but call it poetic lisence ^_-
The elvish vocab usually has somthing to do with the proff I chose eg: Val= power sereg= blood so my necro is called Melmor Valsereg. Simple when you know how.
And of course if you just wanna have some vaguely random/apocolyptic name, you can always fall back on the god that is DOUGLAS ADAMS! Infact my new monk is called "The Salmon Of Doubt" ^_- (and no one has got it yet :( pm me in game if you share my love of Douglas ^_-)
wow that was a long post, I shall now go and get some sleeeeeeeep, u know that thing which you have in the real world insted of restore life spell ;)

Farothen Daedraug (r/w)
The Salmon Of Doubt (mo/me)
Melmor Valsereg (n/me)
Isilme Lomelinde (female r/ele)

Re: What's in a name.

I use two nicknames.

Mellia Darkstar is from Neverwinter Nights so you can imagine for how long i've had that nickname.

Livingdeadgirl has been my nickname for msn, forums, chats, yahoo, other games (well you see what i mean)and i've had that nickname since 1995. And yes it's when the song came out so that's how i remember the date :)

Re: What's in a name.

I normally throw two to three names that mean something and are bassed around the same myth line. Then on some silly moods cut in and you can end up with knights named Sessil or something.

Be it celt, asia, the normal grouped names I like to get from the same settings.

Re: What's in a name.

It took me a little while (10 minutes) to think up my first character's (my warrior) name. So I took my first and last name and added a few letters:

Real first and middle name: Aric Konner
My character's name: Ariance Konress

And my monk's name is pretty self explantory: I'm a healer and I heal doubt.

Ariance Konress W/Mo20 < RPG
Healer Of Doubt Mo/N20 < RPG
Ranger Theory R/Me20 < PvP

Re: What's in a name.

My name here for the forums is from a book, first person to tell me the title of the book gets a + max credit from me. the book is not to popular it seems for most people to read. Only hint I will give for now.

My other names in game are just my evasive mind at work with what ever pops into it for a name lol.

Dracorian say's If she's worth the ride, she's worth my time...

\"Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming ~ WOW, what a ride!!!\"

\"Long ago when men cursed and beat the ground with sticks, it was called witchcraft. Today it's called golf\"

I've decided to dedicate my body to a medical
school, and just before I die, I'm going
to swallow a little plastic toy. That way,
the medical student who cuts me open will
get a nice surprise. I just hope the other
medical students aren't sad because they
didn't get a toy with their cadaver, too.

Re: What's in a name.

For me it involves little sleep, suger, caffeine, and a little evil squirrel that shows up everytime I get those three things together(Darn that evil little squirrel, always telling me to do stuff like turn grapes into plasma in a microwave or turn a microwave into an induction oven so you can melt metals, or make CD's turn incandecent in a microwave, or create mini lightning storms in a microwave). Hehehe, microwaves are fun.

Uhhh....please don't try most of those as they will most likely result in personal injury(good chance of serious personal injury) and a ruined microwave, especially if you try to make an induction oven out of your microwave.

Re: What's in a name.

Well, Sroth The Dead sounded good for a necro. I like using short and simple names versus poor-man's-Tolkien names like "Aldagon Relium" or "Lowendil Bermonir".

As for Ullr Hoax, Ullr comes from Norse mythology. He is cited as being the greatest marksman of the gods. Obviously, he's a Ranger. Hoax is just showing some pride for my Guild, Team HoaX.

The account is new, so this is all I have for now. I can't wait to come up with more names :)

Ullr Hoax: R/x lvl 20
Sir Rhuk: W/Mo lvl 20

Re: What's in a name.

When i come up with an original name usually i pick a number 1-26, or better yet have someone who has no idea what you are doing pick a number. 1=a, 2=b, 3=c, and so on. That letter then becomes the first letter in your new characters name. Now if you really don't like that number pick again or whatever, its your character. I then usually try and come up with something using that first letter, and if i can't i then pick a number 1-5, for a vowel. 1=a, 2=e, etc. if i still have trouble coming up with something i then may consider a new first letter.

Re: What's in a name.

Peter whatshername- my forup accounts namesake, and a charecter you will almost never see. came up with the idea when I was joking about a backstory for a guild I was making with a friend, thought it would be cool if my charecter was really a man that had been turned into a woman, hence Peter Whatsherface

Peter Whatsherface- is similarly based off the above example

Jermoe E Morrow- weas meant to be Jerome Morrow from the movie gattica, but they wouldn't let me take it. So I checked IMDB.com and it said that hos middle name was E, unfortunatly i didn't notice my spelling mistake until i was already thourhgholy involved with the char. (although if I could, I would change the last name to Morningwood and drop the middle E)

Matthew Hans- What brothers are for, identity theft.
