Hey, as of right now, i'm using Ethernet connections to play this game, but as the fall semester comes to a close, i'm gonna have to go home for winter break.
The problem is, at home, the best I can hope for is phone jack connection. I'm wondering, for anyone out there that knows, can I play GW on this connection? Or am I gonna, *gasp*, have to stop playing for a month? I am really looking for a positive answer here, because I'm really into GW, and I want to keep in touch with my friends.

No, you should be fine. I played for a while over a 56k connection. The only this is that there was a noticeable amount of lag every so often. Not enough lag though that it made the game unplayable.

I have an off topic question....is 100mbps fast? and what the hell does it mean? I have never understood what is good and a bad connection speed. *embarassed* :(

Well, to put it into perspective, my dsl speed is guaranteed at atleast 768kpbs download speed. That means that I get roughly 0.768mbps. As you can see even though dsl seems pretty fast, it is only a dent in the surface of a 100mbps connection.
Also, when speaking of bandwidth, (i.e. mbps, kbps) you have to look at it like a pipe. 768kbps would be like the copper water pipes in your house, where 100mbps would be like the cement piping they use for storm drains. What flows through them doesn't really vary in speed (well it does, but for this example lets pretend that it doesn's) just the amount at which it can carry.
So, when you say you are getting a faster connection (i.e. movin up to dsl from 56k modem) you aren't really increasing in speed, just the amount of data that travels over the wire at one time.

That's very true. 100MB/S is the most bandwidth ethernet controllers (ethernet ports on your PC or other hardware that accepts the incoming broadband connection) can handle. To my knowlege there isn't a connection in existance that can push that much, but it's there just so it's not bogged down or lacking in performance. I have a 3MB/s cable connection and it's wonderful. The more you have coming in, the more PC performance you're going to require, however. You won't notice any loss in your connection performance (unless you're just on a HORRIBLY old PC) until you start getting up in the 20MB/s range which I don't think anyone here has or has any intention of getting any time soon. There are a lot of factors that go into it. As phoenix confirmed, it is possible to play GW on a 56k connection. If you're going to be forced to use that connection for a month, I'd investigate a little as to how good that connection is. Some houses get the full 56,000 connect while some only get 36,000 or 42,000. Your PC configuration for your hardware and some software improvements make a huge difference for 56k as well.
Here's a link to a site that I used way back when I had a 56k connection and I was hooked on Counter-Strike. If you've ever played the game, your connection is the second most important aspect of the game next to your video card. I went from having a 500 latency in the servers to having a little under to a little over 200. That's a very notable difference. Anyhow, here's your link >
Planet Maniac 56k Tweaking
When you get there, choose the link 'Ping Tutorial'. Now if you're worried about this article being so geared towards counter-strike, don't be. I'm merely using CS as a base for improvement on your 56k connection. If it tweaks it well enough to play CS then it will give you WONDERFUL performance for GW.
Sorry this reply was so long but I know how hard it can be to give up the game you love because of connection restrictions. I hope it all works out for you.

Orestes - I know a few peeps that got 25mbit/s connections (cant see what they use them for thou) i should mention i live in Denmark, dont know where you come for.
There are ports that support more than 100Mbit/s, my comp got two 1000Mbit/s ports that gives a datatransfer of 125MB/s
A 1Mbit/s connection means that you can download 0.125MB data a sekond

That's very intersting, I guess it's true that you learn something new every day. I didn't know there was such a thing as an ethernet controller that allowed more than 100MB/s. As for the part about you knowing people with 25MB/s connections, I do as well. I was saying that it's not practical and you don't need that kind of power for any reason other than setting up a HUGE network. That amount of bandwidth could support well over 100 PCs playing any game simultaniously. Hell I've used a 786KB/s DSL connection and ran 3 PCs playing CS/WC3 and 5 playstaions playing Socom III online. At certain times there were noticable spikes but only when someone had a critical choak point (i.e. downloading a map, etc.) Thanks for the reply though, I didn't know about the ethernet controller part.
