Is it true that you can voice chat instead of typing now? If so, how does it work? What do you think of it? Do many people use it?

Sure, you can use a voice chat program when you play. This is something you can do with any online game though- as the program is completely unattatched to the game. You have to install a program such as Teamspeak or Skype and team with others who have those programs. To connect with those players, you use the voice chat program you installed to 'call' eachother. There is a limit to how many can chat at once on a call. I think with Skype the max is 5.

Also, you'll need to have a headset with a mic. :) (I got mine at radio shak for like $19.99)
Unless there is something else going on that I've never heard about- this is probably what you heard of.

Whew. Thank goodness. I honestly think it would ruin the fantasy of the game to hear people's real voices. At least with typed chat, I can imagine what they should sound like. Not to mention I can control profanity and such.
Thanks!

You know- I thought the same thing about the mystery of the game and the other heroes. And you're right for the most part. I like leaving the 'face (or voice) behind the pixels' to the imagination.
BUT- If you have friends that you team with a lot, and you want to do some serious plowing through missions, the chat programs are great. You really move a lot faster and the banter between the teammates can be tons of fun.
So- it definitly has it's good points. But I prefer to use it sparingly.

I can totally see what you're saying. With friends I know well, right on. But for a casual gamer like me who plays only one or two months a year, I don't tend to play with people I know.
Imagine the horror: You see a petite little defender with the name "Blast-o-girl" and out pops the voice of someone who could voice-double for Danny DeVito and curses like Andrew Dice Clay.
You can imagine how scared I was that this had become a standard game feature that you couldn't turn off.

I would hate to use a voice program in COH, I want my fellow toons to be sort of romantic, nobody wants to hear my northen accent! Heroes should have a gruff American accent or a cute French female accent. Voice has a place in games like Battlefield or in the Leroy jenkins clip but I don't think it belongs, spoils the fantasy

I will tell you this folks. I have been using Teamspeak and Ventrillo now for three years (Just about the amount of time that I have been playing good online games). Ventrillo is clearer however, I like the features of Teamspeak.
BUT.
I find that using a voice chat program while playing CoH is a good thing. If you are in the middle of fighting it gives you the ability to talk with your teammates and tell them what is going on with your toon, without having to type it out and stopping fighting while chatting your status.
It is also good to set up tactical responses to enemy groups. and arrange strikes and the such.
Just my two creds folks.

see i dont think it would work for me, i play in my basement but u can kinda hear semi-loud noises upstairs. it would be really weird for my parents to hear one side of a CoH convo, and only bits and pieces!! plus most of the time my dad is in the room on his computer, so i dont think he would appreciate me yelling at the computer while i play.

That's another good point, I have a young daughter while she's trying to get to sleep she doesn't need to hear her mum shouting 'KILL THE PORTAL FIRST DAMMIT' and stuff like that

LMAO! I didn't even think of it that way. I can see it now. It's a quiet holiday morning and I'm up early; the wife and kids are still asleep. I decide to spend some time with my favorite DD Defender, Jordan Yen. I find a team and we go to work.
A few minutes later, upstairs you can hear, "WAIT! Don't snipe the purple! AAAAAH RUN!!!" Baby cries, daughter falls out of bed, and I get wife aggro...

Thanks! I worked very hard on it so I'm very proud. After I start my account again and play for a while, I plan to update it for I6 (I haven't played since I4 so some of the data may be off).

Well as for the yelling part that is why I have a headset so I am the only one that can hear what is going on so I don't annoy the wife or children.

How do you know when others are using teamspeak? Is it something you coordinate with your team? Do you use it for pick up teams or mainly just Supergroups?

Well with any voice chat you will need to plan it out because some one has to sign up and make a room for everyone to go to. As for the details on how to do it I am a bit fuzzy but I am sure if you went to the ventrillo or teamspeak sites they cna explain it a lot better than I could.
