Well Slash, I guess that all depends on who you talk to.
:)
500 gold = 5 plat
The games currency is, copper, silver, Gold, Platinum.
For me, 5 plat is alot of money. To my wife...its just pocket change.

Yes, I would say 500 gold is quite a bit IMO. Due to having a serious personal addiction to creating characters and passing things(i.e. weapons, items, food, pond water) between them, I tend to keep my paws on very little gold. Then again...
If you want a good horse that runs faster than your toon, it may not be very much ; all things considered.
It depends on what you want, what your purpose ( your characters purpose) in the grand scheme of things is. And what you are happy to get by with.

5 plat usually burns a hole in my pocket, so I would say that is a decent sum of coin.

sry to say but 5 plat is pocket change.
You should be able to get at least 10 plat by the time you hit lvl 30
