The latest scam: Beware

So we know there are alot of scams out there but i am here to bring up a less common but more fiendish one that i ran into so you all know what to look for.

I was with my warrior in Marhans happily selling off the spoils from a quick walk from Thunderhead when i get a private message "Can i have my 3k now?" Surprised by the comment and the left field that it came from i asked "What 3k" whereupon i was assaulted with explinations of how i was run from Thunderhead to Marhans for 3k. Knowing that i would never pay 3k for a run that i can make myself i denied ever having associated myself with that particular individual and kindly explained to him that i had no reason to pay 3k for a runner nor did i get a runner to Marhans. After recieving my reply the player threatened to report me if i did not pay him his 3k. After i told him to go ahead he had several other people (clearly people who got a cut of the scam) threaten to back up his report with reports of their own ranging from not paying them for running to trading scams if i did not pay them their money. The ranges were from 500g to 10k for green items. I continued to refuse until they said that i have been reported.

If you ever run into this scam make sure that you do not pay them no matter what they say. Yes the threat of having your account blocked and having no way to prove your innocence is frightning enough but don't let them get away with it either. They do not have any more proof that you scammed them than you have that you do not and they will most likely not report you since false reports are taken seriously at ANet. If you do run into this scam switch districts. If they continue to pester you then put them on the ignore list or put on the Do not Disturb thing in your profile thing.

RE: The latest scam: Beware

just to the people that are afriad that there acounts will get banned if they dont give the money u wont as anet req now 2-3 screenshots(and they are able to tell photoshop) then they go into there files at anet and are able to check everythin some 1 has done with that character from buyin a new skill to wot they have said and been so anet will never ban u as once they check they will just see its a hoax report and chances are they will ban the person tryin to report u.

as my mate also has been tried with this scam when i was with him after i had ran him to yaks bend he got whispers sayin from this guy he had just ran him there and my mate owed him money or he will report him my mate told me so i started to whisper this guy and he said stfu to me and said he would give me half the money if i went along with him so i whispered back sayin get lost ive just screenshot all the stuff u have just said and im reportin u and he then put me on ignore list i reported him also added to my friends so i could see when he is on and he hasnt been on since i reported him 3 weeks ago

All I have to say is that that is the funny man. Not that your friend was being scamed but the fact that you took that scamer for a ride he won't soon forget.

BLEAHHH!!!

That's a really disgustingly low form of scam they're running.
I can only think of one way to deal with them and that's screenshooting the conversation, then make a screenshot of your worldmap which'll show you ranged about the area they claim to have run you through and submit both in your own report to ArenaNet. Make sure to invite ArenaNet reps to review the innards of your account for any details that might be in there. You've got nothing to hide and they have that right through the EULA anyway, so why not use it to pre-emptively show your innocence.

The funny thing about that scam though is if you take screenshots of the conversations, it will most likely be their accounts being banned, not yours as I'm sure they are violating the EULA in many ways.

The downside to this scam unlike others is that there is no way to prove your innocence. Even if you do take screenshots all it will show is that they are asking for money that you owe them. Unless ANet accesses their side of the conversations from what could be as much as 30 min before there is no way to catch them.

Just to let you know, people are not banned because people don't come to agreements of pay. So "reporting" anyone because someone didn't pay for a run, is not going to get anyone in trouble.

And this is why people can get runs from people, and feel okay with leaving without having to pay him or her.

really? and here i was being nice and actually paying :P nah it's just better to pay anyway since if you don't it makes your guild look bad as well as the person and there are guilds out there who's sole purpose is to scam other players and you don't want your guild looking like one of those.

Thats absolutely nuts. LOL..whats next? You took my account! Give it back! Or I'll report you!

Don't forget, they would have to have several screenshots of the original agreement of the runnee agreeing to pay xk for a run to "destination."

RE: The latest scam: Beware

I've had alot of people try that with me. After I tell them I don't know what they are talking about, that I didn't get no run from them, and have never seen them before, the majority of the time, they backoff. But there is a select few that keeps pushing it, so I ignore them. I have yet to be reported, or rather, ANet has yet to contact me about anything. All they are doing is a threat. If you didn't get a run from them, then they have no proof to back it up.

Heck, you don't even have to reply back. You could just stare at their empty threats and continue playing, and see how they react. :p All is well!

scam

Seems to me that if names are being recorded and screen shots taken, that they wont be able to do it more then a few times before there busted.
I mean if the same ppl keep making accusations it wont be long before they figure out who is the vitim and who is the scammer.

RE: The latest scam: Beware

Actually, Mann, A-net does ban people for skipping out on paying for services rendered (as in, running). However, it requires a boatload of proof for Arenanet to actually act on that. And it usually takes a couple of reports before they'll get more than a slap on the wrist and a x day suspension.

My w/mo used to do the droks runs a lot, with the occasional Ascension run (LA or ToA to and through Sanctum). Don't really do those anymore, mostly because the gold for time ratio imo isn't worth it when I'm not really getting any "play time" in with the character.

I had a few people skip out on paying while I was running. What I had to do was take several screen shots of me asking the person to pay, and the other people badgering them to pay as well. (What I ended up doing was if they refused to pay, either map back to the town of origin and tell everyone to meet me there, or just kick them out of the party at the next available outpost.) I have succeeded in getting someone suspended or banned twice (when I tried to IM them, I got the message "(character) does not exist". That means that either (a) they got their account banned, or (b) they've deleted the character. Either of those suit me fine.

This scam however, the only thing that you can do really is to take a screenie of them threatening you and report them to A-net and hope for the best. Anet does go back through their files and doublecheck the claims, so it's HIGHLY unlikely that anything will happen to the scammee. The scammer on the other hand, could be in a world of trouble, since that is against the EULA

Never happened to me, I hope it never will. Some people are just jerks, eh?
I've heard stories of similar cases, guess you can never be too careful.
