RE: What is a GREAT Profession for a Ranger?

All the secondaries work extremely well with the ranger primary, just as all the primaries work extremely well with a secondary. It is largely an issue of what you want to do.

Elementalist secondaries will have extra damage-dealing capabilities with both spells and with the Conjure (element) enchantments.

Monk secondaries will be able to heal themselves and their teammates from the rear of the lines, allowing them to supplement other monks and, if necessary, to flee and return if the battle goes badly and ressurection is needed.

Warrior secondaries can defend themselves with Stances, increase ally's abilities with shouts, or give themselves better melee combat ability with melee weapons.

Necromancer secondaries can give more degen, can cause extra conditions, or can use corpses, either for assisting the party or depriving enemy Necromancers of bodies.

Mesmer secondaries can provide extra energy, more interrupts, degen, extra damage from conditions (Fragility for this one), slowing effects, or extra defenses.

Personally, I find that the best secondary class is the Mesmer. I like being able to work in any situation if I know what is coming, and since I know what is coming everywhere, I can always be prepared. Builds using the Mesmer class are very specific to an environment; areas heavy with spellcasters will slaughter a mesmer built for killing fighters, and vice versa. However, a good mes that is designed for the place where it is going can be almost invincible.

Still, make your own choices. Any one you make will work well, so don't worry about it.

RE: What is a GREAT Profession for a Ranger?

Well, it is kind of difficult to explain how to set up a Mesmer. Basically, you have to know what you're up against; what types of attacks enemies will use, meaning physical or elemental and what kind of elemental, what skills enemies have, so if enemies have a lot of slow-casting spells you might take interrupts so you can shut them down, or if they use a lot of fast-casting skills you might take Blackout or Diversion (the former is late in the game though). Basically, Mesmers have a set of skills that are usable against a very small set of enemies, but those enemies simply cannot overcome that set.

Note that for your secondary class, you'll probably usually take no more than 3 skills from it. This is why I like Mesmer as a secondary because you can use those 3 skills to defend yourself against enemies that you know are the nastiest that are around. If there are beasts with hugely damaging Fire spells, for example, you might take Mantra of Flame to make those spells not hurt so much. You might also take Power Spike to stop those spells from coming at all.

For starting off with your first or second character, Mesmer probably isn't the way to go. It is easy for those of us with hundreds of hours of gametime to know what is coming in an area, but for someone without that experience, it is difficult to set oneself up for a specific job. You can be a secondary Mes just fine at any time, but you won't be as powerful as someone who really knows how to use it because you'll be forced to generalize out of ignorace rather than specialize.

RE: What is a GREAT Profession for a Ranger?

It's fine... This sort of site is made for information and advice, so if people come asking for it, we give it to them.

For a new player to pick a ranger... Hmm... That's actually a pretty difficult question to answer. I think that the best way to go would be for the easist quests early in the game, which will let you level up quickly and easily, so I would have to recommend the Warrior or Monk classes. The war's quests involve killing things, but you'll pretty much always have NPC support, which makes things easier. And the monk's quests, unless I'm remembering them wrong, largely involve walking places and keeping people healthy, both of which are pretty easy.

The thing about Guild Wars that you may not realize is that every combination of classes and attributes can be made to work equally as well as any other. No matter what class combination you choose, you'll find that you can kill enemies that both outnumber you and are technically more powerful than you (higher level). The tactics and cunning that you use are really what determine player power, not the actual skills. There are common combinations, namely the Wa/Mo, and Ele/Mes combinations, but these are by no means the only good ones. Besides, if you use something unexpected, other players will have a harder time killing you in pvp, so practice that in pve.

RE: What is a GREAT Profession for a Ranger?

Well, what do you want to do? Do you want to be more annoying? You want to do a lot of damage? Do you want to do alright damage to multiple enemies at once? Do you want to be even MORE annoying? Or do you want to be able to be support or feel that you will be the last one in battle?

In that order:

Ranger/Mesmer: Interrupts, drain energy
Ranger/Elementalist: For the conjures, elemental damage
Ranger/Necro: Draining opponents HP and using poison
Ranger/Warrior: Stances.
Ranger/Monk: Self healing, healing others, etc.

All in all, you will be using the class that can be claimed as the jack of all trades. Being JUST a ranger, with JUST ranger skills, is good enough. A well rounded/balanced character. Just to need think a bit.

Oh so tired. Hi Necro. :)
