As of right now they are the "worst.....idea......ever....."
When I first started and was running around the harbor burning handsing everything that moved I had no problem collecting the various mushrooms and stuff for the easy items they gave.
Now that Im running around the market and the houses doing dozens of quests I find that trying to keep track of, sort and turn in all the collectable junk is NOT very fun or time constructive.
The biggest fault with collectibles is the ridiculously(sp?) large amount of inventory space it takes. Im a level 5 wizard. I have 10+ wands at any given time, several stacks of med kits and repair kits, componants, 2 crossbows with several stacks of bolts a staff and a club as well as dozens of potions. You get 3 bags to carry all this stuff in.
Collecting, until they implement a way to make it inventory friendly is just a pain the rear. I have a list of all the collectibles and the only ones I tend to keep are the ones that are very rare and require a single item for the turn in, they tend to be the best sellable reward.
And thats my opinion on collectibles. =)

And that is one of the reasons we have our collectors page. We don't want anyone to waste their time with the worthless items. And from all that I've heard there isn't to much storage space.
I wonder if they are going to be adding more storage...

Preach the gospel brother...
If you actively attempt to do all the collector items you end up taking up more space then you can afford. Having to drop those valuable items in chests only to recieve crappy collector rewards is just a pain.
It also feels like there are 3 tiers of collectables: Harbor, Marketplace & Everything else. When you start running redwillows and some of the lvl 5 series you get better loot then any collect can give you which negates any use you may have had for collecting items.
Basically once you get your Reptilian, Goblin, Undead and Giant bane weapons from collectors, the rest is just painful to collect and often annoying.
However, if you are lucky enough to find some of the better collector items and turn them in, they may not be directly usable by your toon, but they can sell for a bit of cash if you have a handful to turn in.

After about 3rd level - I stop keeping 99% of the stuff I pick up... except the ultra-rare items of certain collectors. The beetle collector in House J gives you either +2 armor ( random type ) or a +1 armor with a suffix ( cold protection, twilight, mithril etc ). The amulet collector, also in house J gives some wicked stuff for every tier - ending in Giant Bane weapons that are sooooooo nice against trolls, ogres, and well - giants.
It's well worth your while to at least find out what the ultra-rare item is for each Collector - and at least keep an eye out for it. If nothing else, they often give items that are worth 100 - 400 GPs - which is comparable to most mid-level loot. So, you pick up something thats crap? Just click on it, hit the trashcan icon & it's gone.
At levels 1 - 3, the Collectors are a vast source of income and free stuff. I received my first Underwater Action item from the guy outside the Dingy. Having a CLW potion dispenser on the docks makes it worth my while to scoop up all the Whitecaps I find & save my money from buying the potions. Nothing feels better than getting your character out of the blech armor that Goodblade hands out ( however he seems to have gotten more generous lately - since pre-order ) and into some nice Masterwork that I can get from a Pale Creeper.
If you can't tell, I like the collectible system. I like it because it keeps me interested in the dungeon, as some of these can be found in really odd places. it encourages exploration, and even some planning about your inventory. Since all of the collectibles stack up to a multiple of 10 - it's really not a huge hassle. Just be diligent about either deleting unwanted crap and then turning in things for loot often.

I love the collectable system. We just need more inventory space to put stuff in. And the stuff that drops outside of the marketplace could give better rewards for turn-in, more in line with the loot that can drop in the house zones.
It could be much more fun than it is...if we had more room for it all.
Have fun, do it well, and share your knowledge.

I used the collectors extensively. I turned in probably 25 rare, 60 uncommon , and 100 common items to each of them.
The collectors page is listing some rare and uncommon collectables as giving only one reward. I recieved six or seven different items from Giles for his rare collectible. They ranged from a plain old robe ( which was a mistake on the treasure table ) to a hat of underwater action.
I also recieved 3 different sets of + 1 arrows of slaying Dragon ! , Elf , and Gnoll respectivly. Slaying is on a successful hit your target makes a fortitude 20 save or dies.
The girl you turn in the glittering /sparkling/ luminescent dust. She gave me wands of Web/Fireball/Hold person/Magic Missle.
I found the collectibles useful and inexpensive for replacing missle weapon ammunition early on as well as givng me free potions of healing , Bears Endurance , Armor and miscellaneous items.
After an extensive tour of collecting I started being more selective in the collectibles I kept. I am a Rogue with UMD 18 so I can use pretty much anything I find.
It would be much easier if I was a class that used primarily one set of reward types. Which is what I would recommend. Which for most classes would mean maybe 1/2 a pack maximum.

I agree that the Collectors Page here could use some tweaking.
Example: the Document Collector in the Harbor does not give potions as his 2nd tier item - he gives wands. And, listing his Tome of Khyber reward as Wondrous Item would be more in line with what he gives. I've never gotten Boots of Springing from him - but I've gotten things like it ( Helm of Haggling, Gloves of Repair, Boots of Swimming etc ).
Just a thought. :)

If I saw "wondrous item" I wouldn't know what in the hell it was and it would annoy me. I think you should put in examples of the items.

I would go with something more specific. I see "Helm, goggles, etc. but it's nice to have an idea of what modifiers they have so you can decide if you want to make an effort to farm a quest for the rares.

Could I get a "for example" on this one. I'm a bit lost on what you mean by modifiers.

Modifier is the +1, +2, +3, etc. and what skill, ac, save, etc. it affects.
In other words, detailed example items.

The system is, well interesting. But what they need to do is designate a 4th bag that only the collectables can go in and when picked up are automaticly put there. The whole invintory system needs to be worked out a little.
The mistakes of today, are the scares of tomorrow.
