The armor & weapon system

So, I was reading the official forums again today and read some things about the armor and weapons in TCoS.

Basically, it doesn't matter what you wear, just as long as you are there. Well, apparently. Also you can choose any kind of weapon but it won't affect your ability to do harm unto others.
Now I'm a sucker for in game fashion, I freely admit. I'm always trying new combinations of armor to wear and will even go so far as having multiple sets at one time so I can wear something else for a while. I'll even mix 'perfect' with 'so-so' armor to achieve a look I like. So, frequently I have to remind myself to switch into combat-gear before venturing forth so to speak.

In TCoS you can look 'godly' from the start if you so wish, and this will alleviate at least one or two annoyances in most games. People strutting around in armor sets, that you know they've had to spend hundreds of hours on numbing their minds farming, as if that was some kind of achievement and the armor their badge of honour and the second one fixation with the 'perfect' stats.
But, unless it's possible to change outfits later on, for a fee perhaps, it would also take away a big part of my motivation for such games. I'm not the "must have uber-stat item" kind of player, I prefer to rely on innate ability of my character if available and my personal skill as well, but I do want to look nice while beating up monsters. And my definition of 'nice' changes over time.

So what's your take on this?
Anyone have an opinion, or more info perhaps? I'd love to hear that, yes, there will be cloth-shops or something for example.

Ahhhh, a kindred spirit. Fashion also plays a great role in my enjoyment of a game . This system is intriguing, although, I would also like to know how much versatility there will be in changing your appearance. I don't want to farm eternally for that uber piece of armor, but I also don't want to look uber from the onset, with nothing to work for except stats.

Woohoo!
When they game's out we should go shopping some time, act like silly girls and such :-)

We're hardly alone in our opinion, a lot people have been talking, suggesting, asking and even begging about it over on the official sites. But though the devellopers are very community spirited they've not said anything aout it as far as I can find. I'm guessing (hoping) this means they've been told not to spoil the surprise by "Management".
There's usually a list of topics they're not supposed to talk about when meeting the community on forums and such.

Well I've got an update on this topic, and I'm a happy fashion-victim :-)
It turns out that we will be able to change our outfits at will. It's not been disclosed how, but the means will be there.
With any luck the whole 'dress to impress' system will be much like the one in City of Heroes or Villains, only cheaper I hope :-)

Finally, someone pulled their head...um yeah, anyway...

This has got to be my biggest gripe with most of the games I play. A lot of times you are forced into a certain look because you want a certain attribute boost or bonus.

Granted, it's not gonna be very realistic if they go for complete customizability. You're likely to start seein skimpy armor with the armor bonus of plate. But hey, it's a game, and if you can't enjoy it the way you want to enjoy it, why play?

It's not going to be completely realistic, but not in the way you suspect. Armor and Weapons will have a cosmetic use only.
I.e. wearing Cloth Armor will protect you as much as Plate Armor and your Kitchen Knife will do as much damage as a Maul.
The damage you deal depend completely on your Skills, like Guild Wars, only a lot more so.
You probably won't be able to tell anything about a persons class just by his appearance, very unlike Guild Wars. :-)

I think it's a very interesting direction to take.
You could have a sneaky assassin who looks like a big hulking Barbarain. The Spellcasters may be encased in what looks like the biggerst, heaviest armor in the universe and so on. I think it'll be interesting to see who goes for something totally not looking like his class, who will stick with the classics and who will go for something completely their own.

I don't think it's such a bad thing. If you think about it, it might be more realistic this way. If you give me a sword and put me up agains someone with a dagger that is skilled in its use in RL, I would take more damage, simply because I've never fought with a sword and am not skilled in using it for defense, much less attack.

RE: The armor & weapon system

I have to say out of all the MMORPG's I've played the one thing they all have been lacking in was good fashion independance. I don't want to run around fighting and roleplaying and look exactly the same as someone else. I've always hated wearing the exact same armor/robes as someone else of my class and level. We all look the same and that gets extremely boring to me. As in RL I like to wear what I want when I want to. I also very much like the idea that how much damage you do depends on your skills and what you do with them.

All of this makes for some very good roleplaying. :)

RE: The armor & weapon system

First off, welcome to GameAmp, Scythara. Great to have you around, and thanks for bringing back this old thread I had somehow missed.

I think it is a great concept. It will be so much easier to immediately get into your character. And Scythara brought up a very good point that it will make roleplaying easier straight from the start. Of course, it only works if we really have a lot of customizable options. I have been playing City of Heroes, so I am rather spoiled in this area.

But on the other hand, it does make me wonder what I am doing it all for? If I can have anything I want from day one, why would I go out there? I can just hang out at the tavern in Hawksmouth (like I am doing now) and watch the world go by.

RE: The armor & weapon system

:) Hi Phedre and thank you for the welcome. I am also wondering what the rewards will be for adventuring and how it will all balance out. It is true that if you already have everything you want what else is there? In order for the game to survive there has to be something to fight for and some material reward that is usable in the game. Also for competitive reasons the other side of this is that you can't see anything on a character that has been worked for and say "Wow, what can I do that is fun so I can get one of those!" So we'll have to wait and see exactly what it is that is going to spur us on as far as that goes. There are many different factors involved in making a game fun for everyone and there will always be something that someone doesn't like. Personally I have to experience the game for myself and if I like it I'll continue to play it, if I don't then there are many others out there to try. I am hoping for the best. :)

I believe that sitting in the tavern won't get you all the cool skills available. And from what I've read I would say that armor is going to be similar to that in CoH, as in it doesn't matter what you wear, your skills are what matter.

I agree, and was thinking the same thing if your looks are going to be compared to CoH/V then you should also think that your skills/spells/abilities will come from the grind as they do in CoH/V.......you may look uber ..but are you skilled?

This is honestly how I perfer it. I like that I'm not going to be wearing the same thing as everyone else my level and class. CoH really spoiled me.

RE: The armor & weapon system

Now i will admit in the other games that i've played stats made a big impact on how i liked the game, and how much i played... however, in games such as this where it seems armor and weapons dont affect stats/damage, i've tended to just go for a look that suits me fine, after that i practice combat... for those of you who play it just to have "Uber" or whatever gear, then in my opinion you are just wasting your time, a game is about playing it to enjoy, maybe a lil RP every now and then, not to go around for hours on end farming just to walk around and gloat cause you got good gear... i say this feature will add a challenge to the game, both PvE and PvP especially for those who in others rely soley on random crit chains

Welcome to GameAmp, Loistery!

I do agree, those people who play just to get the "uber" gear, most likely won't be as intrested in Spellborn. But those looking for a good solid game, will most likely love it. I know I'm really looking forward to it's release.
