No blind invites?

I know allot of people have a real problem with blind invites. I don't see what the big deal is. If you want to team and you put your name on the list, why does it matter? I was looking for some guys last night to join a team. I invited the guys that were looking for a team. I had one guy snap back to me, saying that he doesn't do blind invites. So, let me get this straight. You put your name on the looking for team list. But instead of being invited, you want to be asked if you want to team? It don't make any sense to me. It all seams just a little silly and redundant to me.
If there is a bigger picture that I'm just not seeing, someone please let me know. If I understand the logic a little better, then maybe I will start turning down blind invites.

RE: No blind invites?

I have no issue with blind invites. And I usually except them. However, I will always first check the lvl of the person inviting me. If they are few lvls below me, I decline it. And if the name is in ALL CAPS, I decline too. But I think if you put up your lft flag, you should expect blind invites.

If somebody has the flag up, I blind invite them, unless they explicitly say they don;t want it. I always send a tell first if the flag is not up, but some players seem to only accept blind invites. If I get no reaction on my tell in 10 seconds I send an invite anyway. Which is then often accepted. No idea why they didn't reply to my tell.

But now the reason why some players get irky on blind invites. They think (and I agree to some extend) that it is just common curtisy to first say hello. And maybe even explain what your plans are. You don't walk into somebody's house without saying hi either.

If I don't have my lft flag up, and get a blind invite I usually decline. They don't know what I am doing, so don't just assume I want to team up. It feels kind of short sighted and self centered to me, so I don't expect much from that player, and thus decline.

THis is just my opinion. But maybe others have stronger feelings, and can explain it better.

RE: No blind invites?

For me, If I have my LFT flag on it doesn't matter to me, i'll accept a blind invite. Now, once I join the team I can personally assess the team levels and can now ask what we are doing and how long team plans on staying together. Then if it is not to my liking, I'll maybe do one mission and go back on the market for another team.

I won't answer a blind invite if my LFT flag is not up though. However, if someone sends me a /t and asks, i'll respond by asking for the teams agenda/lvl/etc. Then I'll decide from that.

Now, if you are having problems getting together a team, something you can do is look for people that are currently on a team and send them a tell to see if they have an opening for you. That way, you know the person's lvl and that a team is already established. Now you may not know their agenda until they invite you (if they invite you). However, I've found some good teams by searching this way and i've met some pretty nice players as well.

RE: No blind invites?

I personally don't like blind invites. When I was first starting out, I think may main must have been around 20-25, I got a blind invite and accepted it, the team turned out to all be around level 12-15 and just expected me to exemp down, without a shred of input on my part. Normally I'd be ok with it, but i had no debt at the time and enough inf to get by, I know its a bit selfish but it just annoyed me that they expected me to exemp, as if I owed the all a favor.

After this happened a second time I decided to decline blind invites. For the simple reason that I would like to know if its going to be worth my while to do. If it weren't for those invites then I'd probably be ok with blind invites.

RE: No blind invites?

I personally don't accept blind invites. Even if I have my flag up, my message will state I do not accept blind invites only tells. I will answer a tell and then before I join I will ask what they are doing, lvls, general plan, etc etc, before I join up.

I dont have a problem helping anyone kill something even if its a low lvl AV because I know how hard it is to kill an AV sometimes. Sometimes you just need help from a higher lvl villain, but if thats the case I wont stay with the team, I will just help them kill the AV and then be on my way.

I used to accept blind invites, but after getting on some bad teams including getting tp killed it gets pretty annoying. Which my the way made me turn on my prompt for team tp right away.

I more or less agree with what most of you have said about the blind invites. If I just get an invite w/o a tell, I usually decline, particulary if my team flag if off. If I am looking and get an invite, I'll usually look them up (levels, etc.), or send a tell asking what the plan is before I accept.

But what's up with the all caps thing? Is that why you always decline my invites, Phed? (lol...not really...phed is always very helpful)

I always use all caps on character names, because that's the way they usually show up in comics, i.e. "Oh, my god! Run, it's STATESMAN!"

Have I broken some unwritten CoH/V law and should I turn in all my hard earned site cred?

RE: No blind invites?

I hate blind invites.

personally IMHO if the leader cant take the time to shoot me a tell how can I expect him to lead a team.. usually blind invites are just ZERG ZERG ZERG..

plus isnt it nice to receive a tell like:

Grp of 3 doing missions 23Brute 21Dom 22Stalker you interested?

or

Hello, looking to start a group for missions are you interested in joining?

well thats what I use anyways.. I tend to make my own groups..

I'll one up on this. I don't accept invites from anybody who doesn't capitalize the first letter of their name. EVERY time I do, I end up with some of the quickest debt around. I think it might equate with too lazy to hold the shift key = to lazy to use strategy, who knows?

Ah, but you have a reason behind you CAPS. I am with Nakoma on this one. Everytime I joined an all CAPS or all lowercase invite, it turned out bad. Of course there are exceptions. Caligari being one of them. But I just made it a rule, and I have not regretted it.

Also players without a bio are often disappointing, but you can only find that out after you joined up.

RE: No blind invites?

Blind invites are annoying for one.

I never have my flag on. Ever.. I actually don't even know how to turn it on.

For example.. You go to click a mob, a glowie, or something you need your mouse for and this damn team invite pops up under your mouse. WTH!!! I don't even know who this guy is named Evil Underpants!! Declined.... I know what you are asking yourself.. Yes I have been invited to teams while in mid mish. Alot!

Next..

I'm traveling to my next mish.. Bam!!! Sockpuppet Love has invited me.. Declined... Bam!!! Sockpuppet Love has invited me again!!! WTH!!!! Leave me alone!!

*shrug* Maybe it only happens to me.. who knows..

See you on Justice w/o Justice!

RE: No blind invites?

I Generally accept most invites be them blind or not if I have my team flag up. I will admit that Villaines Vines appears as villainess vines only because I was so exited that I forgot my Shifting and didnt realize my error till Later on playing and I did not want to delete her over something a trivial as capitols but I do agree that it is nice to receive a tell first. And I would hope that the team leader would be intellegent enough to look at levels before inviting. But I know that doesnt always happen. I usually give a team a one mission trial when I get a blind invite. If I find that the team does not mesh well with each other then I move on. Sometimes you got to take chances otherwise you will never earn your debt badges lol.

RE: No blind invites?

From my internet experience harking back to the days of 200Baud Modems and text only, I have always considered all caps a version of shouting.

When I see all caps this is what I see in my head THIS PERSON NEEDS TO SHOUT!

That's just rude, I don't like being shouted at by voices why should I accept it thrown at me visually?

As to all lowercase letters, with the internet so filled with l33t speak and such I just consider it another way to say something, after all your not writing a book or doing a paper for english class, your talking on the bloody internet.

If I want to misspell werds I will mispell werds, if I want all lowercase letters in my name then so be it, that doesn't change who I am or how I play.

I get many blind invites, if I am unable to join I tell them my reason for declining often I will ask for information, a response to a blind invite even to say "no sorry, gl with your mission though" just seems somehow proper.

And I know for a fact many invites come from players who happen to see me pass them on my way to a mission or something because I get asked my level, if they used "Find" they would know my level and that I don't accept blind invites.

Sometimes I will accept them sometimes I won't, but the spelling of the players name usually doesn't figure into my response, the acception is players named "Debt Bringer" or "Lagmeister" or even "Exp Sponge" I naturally decline the players with similar names.

RE: No blind invites?

My blind invite issue is from past experience. Pick Up Groups (refered to as PUGs from here on in) usually result in a great deal of debt to me. I have one character on CoH that was build solely around teaming, so that I could learn the fine art of being on a team and such. She does AWESOME on a team. She's a Kinetics Defender. The problem is, 9 times out of 10, the PUG members don't listen. They'll aggro multiple groups all at once and spread out. When they all take dirt naps, I get blamed because I didn't heal them. At which point I calmly explain that I couldn't heal them all because they were all scattered around. My heal only does an AoE around the baddie I target. So, the next time the PUG hits a room, same thing, they all scatter and I can't heal.

Things like that anger me. So I decided the best way to avoid it is to find out exactly what people are doing first before joining a team.

I have a new character on CoV which is a Rad/Kin Corrupter, he's going to be build around the teaming concept too, but not as much as my defender. I'm trying to focus on making him with as few power pools as possible, which should be a treat.

RE: No blind invites?

Well, I for one, am appalled. I mean really, if a visually challenged player is nice enough to want to include you in a team that they are putting toge...(tap tap tap) Oh, Hi, Crampus. I was just posting abou...(TAP) Uh, yeah. Let me start again.

I understand your feelings, to a point. If you put yourself (flag) up for teaming, you should be open to considering any invite. The problem with this, and perhaps you havent experienced it, is that there are many people who still believe that power-leveling is possible. They may not admit it, but if you team with them for a few moments, you will realize this is the case. Especially when they start griping about the XP. The other posters here have mentioned the problem with having the invite screen pop up in the middle of a battle, or my personal favorite; when I am TP'ing at high altitude across the zone. Can you spell faceplant. Hard to complete a 'port when you are clicking the destination point on an Invite. BUT I can get over that. The biggest problem is that even when you are NOT looking for a team (and it is marked thusly in your lookup), you can still expect these very same invites. Uh, c'mon people. I dont want to Team right now, it says so right here. Now, just to get the point across, my search lookup states: "Do I know you? Do I want to know you?" Subtle, but to the point.

Personally, if I am looking for a team or just another person to help with a mission; I will ALWAYS send a Tell first. I NEVER just blind invite someone to a team. It's not the way I roll. My reasons? The same ones I just mentioned. I dont want to tick someone off when I need a hand. I usually get what I want (a team mate) within a few minnutes, and sometimes I get a friend out of the deal. Courtesy, plain and simple. It's getting to be a rare commodity around Paragon and the Rogue Isles.

RE: No blind invites?

I hate it when I get blind invites when I'm not even looking too. Some people just don't get it. The best thing to do about that is, /hide. I type "/hide" when ever I feel like soloing. That way I don't show up on any list anywhere. It looks like you are off line to even your friends and super group. I never get any invites then, unless it is by some idiot standing there while I'm buying enhancements or something. The tricky part is remembering to type "/unhide" when you are ready to team.

NO Blind Invites

I wouldn't mind blind invites except when you are in the middle of a mission and all of a sudden you get this window in the middle of the screen "that some incoinsiderate person" can't use the search window and see that you are on a mission. From that same /search window you can also send a /tell for help. I really have no problem with helping anyone out. But be helpful to me and let me finish "MY" mission. Mine has as much importantance to me as their's does to them.

RE: No blind invites?

I feel strongly about this topic so i got a login and replied.

I agree completely with most of the preveous comments especialy about not having your flag up. If you have your flag on not seeking then by all means you should reject BI. But here is the thing. 98% of players don't use these flag properly. Most don't know they exist. If people used these and also placed some for of comment in there, eg. No Blinds or Lft then this issue would not exist. There is simply not enough people you are lkn for somthing to invite. I am preety sure you can't invite someone who is in a mish also so that point is null and void. Don't want BI put it in the comments.

Me I love Blind Invites. But i use my flags and comments box properly.

Be nice if it was true therus9, but you CAN get an invite in a mish. It happened to me just the other day. I thought it was weird to say the least. I should have bugged it, maybe. Also in a previous post: dont be too harsh on people BI'ing you in mish, as if they cant see that you are in a mish. I havent tested it, but I know that there are times I am shown in SG Base when I am in mish and vice versa. So the inviter may see you as in your SG base. I am not 100% sure on that though.

RE: No blind invites?

the search window does allow you to see if others are in a mission. when you look at there location it will say on mission map rather than like Nerva etc. I did notice that it does say that I am on a mission map when I am in my base but I have never seen that I was in my sg base. I think the invite while in a mission must be a bug. Usually when someone is in a mission it will tell you that the player is in a mission and must exit before they can join your team or some jazz like that. And I agree many people especially noobs dont know how to use there flag for teams.

You can receive invites while in a mish. A bug? I don't know. You being on your mish map hasent registered across the server yet? I don't know.. But I wouldn't post the fact that it has happend if it didn't.

Yet and still..MY Flag has never been turned on. As a matter of fact when I'm not grouped with my wife my group window literally says up top that I'm not looking for anything.

Just annoying is all.. very annoying.

agree that there may be some server repliaction issues that fails to recognise your location but if you invite someone in mish it will come back saying have to waait till out of mishion to invit player. and it is fine when you say Steel Afterlife that you have never put you flag up but the problem is that people who want to team don't flag up so you invite anyone who is free what they should do is have people with there flag down should not come up in the search window or possable not be able to invite them to team.

RE: No blind invites?

Before we forget. Welcome to GameAmp, therus9!

Indeed most people don't use the lft flag, especially not in COV where there are a lot of new players. What would be great is if you could put up a not-lft flag. That way if you really want to, you can block yourself from any kind of interaction. Your SG and friends can still see you, so it is not as rigorous as /hide, but it would protect you from BI's and even surprise /tells.

Unsuspected tells can sometimes be more annoying/embarrassing then BI's. When you are having a conversation with a friend, and all of a sudden a /tell comes in your reply (ie. backspace) did not go exactly where you expected it (which can be quite embarrassing). And you have to type in the full name of your friend again, and maybe even the whole text as well (which can be quite annoying). A BI is gone in one click.

I do accept Blind Invites but only from those people whom I have teamed up with before. The reasoning is that I know what they can do and I am comfortable with their style of play. Otherwise I will refuse.

Well my stance on blind invites is I do not accept them for the main reason being that during the week I can't do TFs so I would like to know before if they are doing a TF or something else that requires a signifigent amount of time to do so that I don't get the teams hopes up.

Re: BIs

I had to make an account here so that I could put in my 2 infamy in as well.

In my experience with the MMOs I've played (EQ1, EQ2, CoH/CoV) unsolicited blind invites have been usually a lesson in pain, death, corpse runs, xp debt, etc.

At least with having someone ask me first, I'll know they can communicate in game, thus I can figure out what's going on, help with tactics, etc. Many times I've accepted blind invites, I end up with a 'silent partner' who just goes back to what they were doing, and expect you to both automatically be able to deduce what they want you to do, as well as keep up with them (especially when they run headlong into danger).

Heck I'd accept a group/team invite from someone who can only speak (and ask) in local over someone who doesn't speak at all.

That being said, I'd be more open to BIs if I were to advertise lfg/lft by channels or flags, but even then I'd still prefer tells.

All that being said, I think the only non-pre-advertised BI I'd really consider accepting would be for an immediate goal (ie tackling a tough challenge directly ahead of yourself, such as the rare huge monster or danger zone groups), although I shouldn't be expected to hang around after that task is completed.

Also players without a bio are often disappointing, but you can only find that out after you joined up.

I never hold it against someone for NOT having a character Bio. I mean after my 40th-50th Toon I only write one for the few toons I feel are 'Special'. On the other hand I like to observe costume contests and Give out my own prizes for the best thought out or creative Character Bios.

RE: No blind invites?

Not to necessarily gainsay anyone or say someone is prevaricating in the least. BUT Steel, exactly what I was saying was that getting an invite "in mish" happened to me "once/one time" in a cavern mish just after I brought up bots. I dont automatically bug something which may have been a server glitch. Even the best proggies glitch at times. If I get a repeat of the problem then I will bug it. Like I said, this only happened once.

RE: No blind invites?

Blind invites are usually a toss-up to me. Some days, I'll accept all of them without question, some days I decline, some days, I mix it. It all depends on my mood at that moment and what I'm doing when I get the invite. If I'm in a mission, I'll almost always decline it. If I'm not on the LFT List and I'm doing ok solo'ing, I'll decline it. I don't know about all you guys, but I've had some rotten experiences with blind invites. For example, I'll accept a blind invite and the leader wants to start a Task Force! Whoa whoa, dude. This is the kind of thing I want to know before I join a team. Or the group will be considerably lower than me and they "just want my help." If you want my help, why can't you just be polite and ask first? I'm happy to help out the lower levels 99.99% of the time, as long as you let me know what I'm doing first. If I'm doing you a favor, can't you treat me with a little more respect than a lady-of-the-night you just grabbed off the street?

When I'm looking for teammates, I ALWAYS send a tell first before I invite, even if they have their flag up on the Looking For Team list. To me, its a courtesy thing. What could it hurt asking first? Maybe they forgot to take their flag down. Maybe they're busy soloing something in between teams. Who knows? So why not ask first?

I get many blind invites, if I am unable to join I tell them my reason for declining often I will ask for information, a response to a blind invite even to say "no sorry, gl with your mission though" just seems somehow proper.

I don't completely agree with this comment. If someone isn't nice enough to send me a tell before an invite, I don't see why I should. On the other hand, if someone sends me a tell and I decline, I ALWAYS tell them why and wish them "GL."

RE: No blind invites?

Well it's nice to know that there are other Proper Rogues out there. I prefer to be polite unless I'm trying to RP some sorta nasty whatever. And even then, I keep it to a comical satire then a 'flame'. Where'd that term come from by the way? *shrugs* Mind wandering again..

Anyways, saying GL or whatever you want to someone who has sent you a tell is the curteous thing to do...but if you don't you can just click no and that's it. *shrugs* I don't see the big problem. Now the tell issue, someone sending you a tell and then you MT back to them that, 'The dog just licked me in the worst spot'...well that can be a problem. Your significant other might laugh, but they might want to know your name...*wink*

RE: No blind invites?

i dont like blind invites because, i have accepted them to many times and ended up on a team way lower than me who just happen to be stuck with a mission and want you to finish it for them or they are looking to be PLed, not that i dont mind helping people with AV missions or people that i know that are playing an alt.
(i know i should check, but sometimes you spend so long lft that you just get excited when it pops up ;P)

the other reason happened to me last week... was going around Nerva getting the exploration badges that i'd missed and got a blind invite, which i accepted. So i headed to where the team was gathered and saw it was the contact for a respec SF. i told them i didnt have time for a respec, and was about to add that i could stay with them for the first few missions if they wanted or if they didnt want that then i would leave the team. before i could type anything else i was kicked from the team. Some people!

was a blind invite! now i only accept them from people that i know.

ask first, its only manners :)
