Annecdote

Well, the other day I was playing with my new Ranger and I joined up for the Quest at Cultist Shrine. We had a party made up of Lvl-1's but just before entering I noticed this Lvl-3 Dwarven Fighter looking for a party for that particular Quest, so I thought why not. So we added him to the group. We said hi to him and he responded. We then commenced talking strategy while he came our way.

In this Quest one of the objectives is not to kill six Kobold Prophets. Sounds easy, but it's not, especially for Fighters... Our strategy was that our Rogue and my Ranger would sneak ahead and steal the jewel which is the main objective. I'd be along for muscle if the Rogue got caught by the boss at the end. So we asked if anyone agreed, and all said yes. Including the Dwarven Fighter.

So in we went, the rogue and I snuck up to the first door, opened it quietly and were all but knocked over by a Dwarf rushing past to the accompaniement of multiple "NO!"s and "WAIT"'s by the other party members. Our Dwarven fighter then commenced to slay all six Kobold Prophets in record time. It was like he was specifically gunning for them. Two minutes later we were outside again. The Dwarven player got dismissed (naturally) and we now knew why a lvl-3 Fighter still needed that Quest. Today I logged on and checked the Party-Search list to find he's still looking for a group that can sneak faster than he can kill. :-)

Well they are going to be there in every game... and if they weren't we wouldn't have any funny stories to tell... so did you guys get the quest finished after you kicked him?

RE: Annecdote

True, true.
And so far this guy was an exception to the general population's behavior. That makes it funny rather than annoying. I did run into a Rogue who didn't do disabling of dvices or picking locks. He also wasn't rigged as a swashbuckler / dual-wielder either, so I have no clue as to what he was trying to be.

And we did do the Quest without a hitch the second time. One Paladin got spotted by a prophet, but he just put up his tower-shield and let it beat on that until we got the jewel, then he went *Splat!* on the Prophet with his mace.

RE: Annecdote

hahahah, the very first time I did that quest I'll be damned if the first 6 monsters I killed weren't Prophets. It never even occured to us to look at the objectives for the types of monsters we were not supposed to kill. That was a rude awakening.

You did touch base on something I firmly agree with. Out of all the betas I have ever participated in, DDO has the most polite and well mannered community I've seen. I've heard rumors of a few punks being in the population but alas, I've not been fortunate enough to meet them.

Of course your little dwarven fighter may not be a punk, just a bad player and I've found a metric ton of those!

Definately the most polite.
I als don't recall seeing so many "Just a sec, kids {something}" or "I'm sorry, I'll have to get started on dinner now or there'll be a riot here" in stead of "Shit Moms calls me for dinner bye" in other games. Not saying this game is filled with stodgy old "parents", but I do think the average age is a few years older.

P.s. 5 Prophets died on my first time at that quest. ;-)

You would think that with a quest named "Stealthy Reposession" people would get the idea that running in swinging wouldn't be the way to go about things.

Wish there were a few more quests in game that weren't all hack, all the time. Stealth quests can be loads of fun, if you are willing to leave the zerg at the door.

D&D is as much about what happens outside of combat as it is about what happens during combat, and I would hope DDO would try to emulate some of that.

Have fun, do it well, and share your knowledge.

RE: Annecdote

Well, there's a lot of Quests where stealth, or just taking your time. I.e. not trying to make a race out of it, would benefit the completion chances. But you see a lot of people just bargin in over traps, dying, healing up in a tavern and rushing back in for the next trap.

It's a matter of approach. When someone on my team asked if the team could slow down just a bit, one of the others thought to explain that. He said something like "He's one of those PnP players who doesn't understand that this is an MMO and MMO players don't want to wait around". Now, I'm an MMO player, but I think I'd probably be classified as an PnP player by him. And I wouldn't make such all encompassing statements about any community myself. :-)

My hopes in this regard are firmly on Guilds. I bet there will be RPG die-hard Guilds and "MMO" Guilds of the description above. I'd rather call them FPS-like player Guilds. Maybe there'll be a few in between Guidls as well, where you don't have to type in thee's and thou's but people will have a more, conservative playing style. Not rushing, taking time to look at the scenery, read the objectives (Nogame!) and such ;-)

I think there will be large number of players that will play with the "enjoy the story" mentality. At least I hope so. Of course we should/could set an example as Ampers and make a guild with that mentality. I usually skip over the long texts that you get, but I will definately try to find all the tricks and traps. Doing the mission is to me more important than finishing it.

I guess I'm a strange one b/c I like to read all of the text, and if i haven't completed a quest I feel a bit um... empty inside...

But I do like to complete them all the way, and LOVE the "optional" objectives. I think they add a nice twist on the quests and make the replay value higher b/c you can't catch everything the first time through it.

He, don't get me wrong. Nothing is more annoying than a half finished quest. No mather how long it takes, or how many times I have been slain, I will do anything possible to finish it. I am just saying is that I am not doing the quests for the xp so that I can move to the next one as quickly as possible.

ohhhhh i see.... yeah i'm not caring about the xp to much... i just want to see what they are going to throw at me next in the dungeon.... but i can be pretty incouragable when i'm trying to get a quest done.... like i don't really care how many times i die... i just need to see the end!
