Could someone give me the break down on the in game money system? I know I'm not broke, but I really have no idea how much money I really have. So, who has the low down on the currency rate?

Pennies, dimes and dollars.
1 platinum piece = 10 gold pieces = 100 silver pieces = 1000 copper pieces.
It's all very metric.
Have fun, do it well, and share your knowledge.

They all build in units of 10:
10 Copper Pieces = 1 Silver Piece
10 Silver Pieces = 1 Gold Piece
10 Gold Pieces = 1 Platinum Piece
I know this is just a re-phrasing of what Red said - but it's how I've gotten most of the new-to-D&D folks to understand the system. :)

And how hard is money to come by? Do you really have to save up, and do money herding quests to allow you to buy decent sets of weapons and armor, or do you usually have enough of it to go with the flow?

It's a pretty even mix, really. At lower levels - yes, you'll need to save up for nice gear. Particularly if you want to browse the Pawn Shops. A weapon that a Lev-2 character can use runs about 9,200 GP in a Pawn. But, that's for +2 weapons, elemental weapons ( fire/frost/acid/shock ) and plussed Bane weapons. So, a Lev-2 would have to save up a lot for to have those right away. Higher level characters have a lot of cash on hand - and can browse the Pawns at will - but may have to save up for some of the higher level-required items.
Balance that with the fact that the game *will* give you gear appropriate for your level in most chests. True - it may not be gear you want or will use... but you can sell it. I've yet to have a character that I've felt is ill-equipped to handle life as an adventurer from a gear perspective. I may not have everything I want - but I have some good stuff right away. Especially with one change they made to the Training Area - where you can buy weapons at extremely low prices ( from Four-Fingered Thad ). I mean... being able to buy a Composite Long Bow for 6-SP is almost criminally generous on Turbine's part. They go for 130-GP out of the Training Area. He sells all basic weapons for 6-SP, in fact. You may only be able to buy one or two - but it makes sure you have some decent weapons from the get-go So, make sure to talk to the dwarf before shipping out of that area. ;)
Also, some Wondrous Items and plussed weapons can be found pretty soon into the game. Not a lot - and I think it's a good mix. Finding an ultra-rare collectible will make your day at Lev-1. :)
All in all - I think that the spread of loot and money in the game is pretty good as it is right now.

So far I have not bought any equiptment. All of the ones I use have been gotten from chests. They actually do give a good amount of stuff. Of course I playing a barbarian, so I don't requre a whole lot of equiptment yet. But I'm saving up my gold for when I do need to start buying them.
And thanks for the break down guys! I really needed that.

One other thing of note when it comes to equipment...
Starting and low-level gear looks like what it is - starting and low-level gear. It looks like crap, for the most part - especially armors. But, as you gain levels, your gear begins to look better & better. I think it adds a subtle but very potent feeling of success to the game. You won't roll off the boat and find a gleaming suit of full-plate. Yes, some of the starting armor looks *very* cool - but the gear you find later on will trump that.
Wizard robes get very colorful and elaborately designed at higher levels - as opposed to the drab and icky starter robes.
Helmets get richer and more interesting colors as you advance in levels.
etc.
So, don't worry too much about your starting gear's looks. It will get much, much better.
( I know that this has little to do with money or gear-acquisition - but since this is a Materials thread, I thought it'd be a good place to add the info )

Another note on money (though this is more of a roleplaying aspect) is that in eberron the coins have different names, as far as I can tell this won't come into play in the actual game, but if you want to geek it up a bit the coinage is as follows:
Coppers - called 'Crowns', typically one side of the coin will have a picture of the crown of Galifar on it.
Silver - called 'Sovereigns', typically the coin will have a picture of the current ruler of whatever nation it was minted in on one side.
Gold - called 'Galifars', typically having a picture of King Galifar I on one side of it.
Platinum - called 'Dragons', typically having a picture of...you guessed it...a dragon on one side of it.
Generally on the other side of any of the coins will be the coat of arms of whatever nation they were minted in.
