I'm not insulting the current graphics quality or anything but I was wondering if it was going to get better. Many people, including myself, have invested in the lastest and greatest video cards, which are wasted on the current GW.
I was thinking if it wasn't possible to have increased detail the new game then why not make a Guild Wars Factions High Definition or something that would still be compatible with the lower detail verson but give the user's hardware a chance to reach its full potential. My brand new GeForce 7800 GT is begging to be broken in! Please don't let it down. :'(

no the graphics will not change in Factions.
what is that you dont like about it?
remember, its an online game not a Single Player game, dont expect same detail as Half Life 2 has.
Anet has to think about such people with worse computer than yours. If they made it super awesome, only the rich and famous would play, and Im sure thats not profitable for Anet.

why do people keep asking about this...i see nothing wrong at all with the graphics. Compare Guild Wars graphis which is a free online game, to the graphics of WoW which is a Paid online game...then count your blessings.

i agree. GW graphics is at top-notch quality compared to WoW and other online games. I also believe Guild Wars was awarded with the Best Environment Award in the 2005 VGA. The new login screen just kicked GW graphics up another level with the amazing ripples on the ocean and the smallest details. I'm using a Radeon 9800 PRO and i couldnt ask for better graphics.

Still I wish there would be higher resolution character textures and better shadows... they still look suboptimal with all max at 1280x1024x32

GW graphics are the best I ever seen on a online game.

If you want to put your graphics card to the test get Doom 3.
On topic: I doubt the graphics will be much different.

Quite frankly I think Guild Wars managed to get a very good balance between quality and performance. Like L I I run on a Radeon 9800 Pro (128MB) and I've recently played with some Beta's on upcoming games with "better" engines and to be even more frank, they seem to do less with more (video resources that is). To get the same overall quality as I get in Guild Wars I'd have to set the detail to levels that made my PC S---L---O---W to unplayable levels. Dragging the quality level down to playable levels included stuff like not seeing trees which were twenty feet away and not seeing details of fellow players and/or monsters unless they were almost on top of me. I guess that'd be cool if you're Roleplaying a nearsighted person, but I was playing a Ranger. It's nice then to be able to see as far as your bow's range.
It's probably true that the latest, hottest set of videocards can sleep through a Guild Wars game and have to work on some of the newer games, but that's not Guild Wars' problem. It's the newer engines which are being 'wasteful' with resources. Of course nVidia and Ati are very happy with this as it nudges people into buying their new hardware.

Or Quake 4 for that matter, that game literally fryed my old card.
Yes sometimes i do wish that GW had better textures for those of us with Dx 9 Gfx cards, and some more advanced shaders and lighting but we have to remember there are people playing this game with setups like 256mb Ram, 32mb Gfx cards, and 1 Ghz CPU's. Also it would take Anet alot of time to develop new textures and techniques and i think they are a bit busy at the moment with factions etc.

Online games have never had the best graphics. Who remembers Everquest? I played the free month demo of that and pretty much laughed my way through all the boxy cardboard environments.
What would be nice would be the option to choose to have everyones armour in high-res within cities and outposts and other small tweaks. But overall it's fine IMO.

yah see i have a little geforce 2 (PCI cuz i have a stupid HP) that i could barely run GW with (i only had 256 RAM) however just recently i got another 256 RAM and now i don't lag for the first time ever. if they beafed the graphics up from their already friggin awesome (i've seen em on my friends super computer) then i would have to go buy a whole nother computer and lots of others would to so plz Anet don't beaf it up

I would love to be immersed in a fully rendered 3d environment with realistic shadows, light and particle effects but I can't afford the top end cards and if GW didnt perform well without one I wouldn't be playing it, I'm sure there are thousands if not hundreds of thousands of players like me. Thats one of the beauties of the game - no online fee and no need for the latest superduper graphics card means its b***dy cheap!(oh and lets not forget you can still play it with a 56k modem!) But does it look cheap? I dont think so..still love those skys
Really take a look at WoW I couldn't believe how appalling the graphix were in that esp when they are expecting you to pay for it monthly. It would be great if Anet could introduce better rendering for users on high level cards as long as its not at the expense of us paupers :-)

I am pretty happy with the graphics .. however it isn't something you can easily change. I don't imagine much will change in factions, but I bet there will be better grpahics. The change will be minor, but I am sure they have tweaked their gw engine to provide better results.
1600x1200, Full AA, High Terrain, All Reflections, High Texture, and High Shadows looks pretty damn good to me.
High Definition support would be neat, just to look at on my 60" hdtv ... but for games like gw I personally find the screen too big, my 20" lcd is much better suited, easier to see what's going on.
Doom 3, f.e.a.r., 1st person shooters are more suited for a bigger screen or racing games, not gw (IMHO).

Typical request of those that can afford better hardware than most everyone else, make the game more enjoyable for them and screw everybody else. My repsonse is, go buy something made for your @#$%! graphics card and don't let the door hit you on the way out!
BTW - Thank you ANET for making a game that people with nearly all levels of hardware and internet connections can enjoy playing. Furthermore.thanks for adding free content and your policy of no monthly fees. Obviously you aren't greedy and uncaring, unlike many (hint, hint, cough, cough).

I can appreciate people with top of the line cards wanting GW to have a bit more graphical "umpf". That doesn't necessarily mean they think GW's graphics suck. I would like to get the most out of my card to if I had one of those. And who knows, it might very well be that Factions will demand a little bit more of a graphics card than GW Prophecy did. The armor on the two new professions looked more detailed than non-15K armors we're used to. And I can predict that more cutomization of characters will also have its effect on videocard performance.
I do hope they'll keep up their near seamless gradual improvement as you slide up the Graphics Quality bar. That's one of the things in which Guild Wars' engine is a lot better than most others. With most games you're stuck with low, medium high and highest settings where there's huge gaps in between.

All the graphics ought to be client-side anyway.
Do you really imagine that the enitre graphics data set is streamed to and from the client computer?
Or is it more likely that what is streamed is more like this (there are probably tons more messages back and forth, but I simplified for the example):
Server: MOB1.move x,y
Client: render graphics for {MOB1.move x,y}
Server: MOB2.attack CurrentTarget
Client: render graphics for {MOB2.attack}
Client: User.Move x,y
Client: render graphics for {User.Move x,y}
Server: {receives User.Move Command}
Server: objectN.performSomeAction
Client: etc.
So, the weenies with wimpy cards, like me, could still play if they beefed up the graphics overall. Each individual card can perform as well as possible locally. The only thing that would need changing is writing new code (that's the rub) to improve the top-end graphics by basically making the polygons smaller for more detail and whatever else they do with anti-aliasing, shadows, reflections, etc., then just update the client code with a patch.
But I also think the graphics don't leave much to be desired. Go play D2 as long as you can stand it, then come back to GW and you will be happy again.

I have to say, I have a 56k and a decent graphics card. If I were to try and play something like Half-Life 2 my computer would, well..... think about what happened at Chernobyl. I am perfectly happy with what Anet has done. Even on the highest resolution setting, I can play GW with a little to no lag, and most of the lag I got was from being in the towns. Given the fact that we need to save our money for the new chapters that are rummered to be comming out every 6 months, I pray everyday that the graphics will stay the same or simply change only slightly so us with the crappy computers are not forced to buy a new graphics card instead of the new chapter of GW or buy the new chapter only to find out that I need to spend about another $250 simply to play the game at a crappy resolution. I know that this has maybe been a little redundent, but I say, let the graphics stay the same and let us continue to be able to play an awsome game that has no monthly charge and runs on all sorts of gamming machines and internet connections. And, really, isn't that why we play video games, to have fun.

This here is what I was getting at, thanks Xavier Darkraven. If they had some setting that allowed you to even see the armor in the same detail as the user see's it. All the textures and enviroments are already on our computers in the GW client, so nothing would be sent across the net to make dial up loaders slow, and if you had an older video card you could just turn that setting off.

I fail to understand why anyone would not want the graphics updated. I mean, if your computer is not up to par you just need to disable some of the high en effects and lower the resolution, while I can be happy, enjoying all the glory of HDR-lightning, more advanced shaders and better textures. It's not like your game will run slower just because I turn my graphics up.
And just because other online games look worse it doesn't mean that GW should never be updated. I have a high end computer, and I would like my favourite game to take advantage of it. Imagine how utterly great GW would look with sharp lightning effects, grass moving aside as you run through it, and some superb textures.

Wow!
Lep Cow, I have to agree here. Your signature takes up two full screenheights at 1280x1024, so that's 2048 pixels or so.
Recommended height is 150 pixels to 400 pixels maximum. So, your signature is about five times as large as it needs to be.
It's almost as if you're compensating for something ;-)

dont think so, go play oblivion at maxs detail that should break it. Doom 3 dont have all the tecnologies new gfx's support so it wouldn't be a good test. also F.E.A.R is a good start for testing your gfx. dont know if F.E.A.R will be abel to break it. but if it do OC!!!
and i like that GW isnt more demanding, it means i can play 2 games at the same time (1 on each screen)
who would have thought that CPU and MOBO's could burn... or atleast they got toasted pretty good
