So recently I've actually been using my microphone in game. This is the first game I've ever used a voice program while trying to play. I have to say I tend to not read the typed text if i'm talking and I tend to not use the voice chat if i'm typing.
But I have noticed the wide varity of people playing the game now. And the one bad expierence I have had w/ the voice chat was the other night when the guy was obvious drunk, just chatting away. It was intresting to have the insight that he was intoxicated (rather than just stupid). He was one of those people you DON'T want to be on a team with.
And I have to say there are a lot of people who are shocked that a female is actually playing the game. I have had several comments (via tells of course) about how suprised they were that I was willing to not only play a female character, but to also use the voice chat. When this happens I just tell them (on the voice chat) not to worry b/ c i'm not a "real" girl *grin*.
Anyone else have any voice chat stories, expierences, opinions?

Hahaha, how old were most of these guys 13? Mabey 14? I know more girls who play games than guys, so I wouldn't find it that much of a shock.
I have to get a headseat mic =(

On the voice chat, I played WoW using Skype with a friend right from the beginning and it was a great help in combat as he played Warrior and I played Hunter we could swap targets in a second.
But more important for us was the social side, which helped to pass the time while the crappy grinding went on, although this wont be a problem in DDO.
As for the Girl players, I was conned into believing that a char in WoW was played by a RL girl, I was quite annoyed to find after I stopped playing that this was a lie, and It had been a guy all along, so being able to hear the voice will make this less likely to happen.

I'm not the kinda person to just hop on a voice chat and start talkin to people. I would much rather know the person even a tad before I go talkin to them in RL.
In typing you don't have the normal conversational problems, like people interrupting each other, and you can actually think about what you want to say while and after you have typed it before you actually send it. When you are speaking, once you say something, it's out there.

My ability to use Voice Chat has been fubar since the 4.5 patch. Very discouraging, really. I come from more of a FPS background - particularly Day of Defeat. We use the mic to make plans and inform everyone of what was going on. So, I love the mic & would use it if I were able.
Yeah, idiots, drunks, and stoners seem to find the mic endlessly fascinating. =/ I want to hear more about how we're going to tackle the Beholder & not how baked a person is.

Hey now, not all stoners are bad *darts eyes*. I don't tend to talk much through typing or mic, unless I know the people and are good friends, and I'm nto overly retarded or an idiot when I'm stoned and on a mic, people find me rather ammusing and entertaining and comical on those rare occsions Im on a mic.
Although I do hate those idiots who take it to far, I hope there is a way to mute people.

well there is an option to disable the voice chat... you wouldn't hear anyone then
And I've never really lied about my sex in a game... i usually beat around the bush and won't give a straight answer (aka "what do you think?!"), but i've never said i was a guy....

Well, the only time I ever saw someone actually go "ASL?" in chat was with 13 and 14 year olds. To them, I think it's just a means to get a conversation going. Personally I prefer it if they atleast couch it a bit in a normal sentence, like "so where are you all from?". I think the Uber-short notational style is something that came over from the FPS genre. Could be mistaken though.
And Jeni, m = more :-)

Just a note on the integrated voice chat..
They don't recommend enabling it if you are playing on dial up. They say that it mayb cause severe game and sound performance degradation.

I find voice chat to be great for quickly warning other players of upcoming traps,encounters,strategies,etc. I just wish they put an option in so the leader could choose who can talk on voice chat. Don't know how many times you get people talking over someone trying to say something important with some nonsence babbling cause they like to hear their voice.

That would be a great feature!!! Having the ability for the team leader to mute everyone but him! I bet that would make some teams a lot more enjoyable.

I try not to get involved with any of the leading things* but playing a rogue I like to stay just a few steps in front for finding traps etc..If I then tried to tell the group there was a trap and they walked into it I would be somewhat annoyed to find out the leader had everyone muted. I have a simpler way to handle people who annoy me on chat. I just smile and get through the quest as best I can then say thanks for the group but I must depart and I just remember not to group with the annoying person again. In the case of a supreme a****** annoying everyone they should just simply be booted from group. Usefull information can come from anyone in group, if someone is stuck or falls behind for whatever reason I would prefer knowing sooner rather than later.
*by leading things I refer to searching for players to fill empty slots in group, or deciding which way to go at an intersection. as a rogue I have found I am often busy enough searching for traps, control boxes, hidden doors etc.. I leave the rest up to those with a bit more time
