in some quests, you may receive leftovers. things like the ancient daggers. if this happens and you are certian you have finished the quest, go ahead and toss the items from your inventory.
this does not apply to collectables however! things like mushrooms, and notebook pages can yeild items ranging from potions to wands to robes to armor.

1st off Welcome to the site!
2nd that would make a really great tip. That way it won't get burried in the forums, and of course you would get credit for it.

Those left-overs are often quest-goals that you need to turn in to the quest giver in exchange for a reward. You mentioned the ancient daggers... well, those are needed to get the reward from Lord Goodblade. If you dump them from your inventory - you sacrifice the reward. Some items are also needed to continue the quest - like Hetman Shaags Notes in the Steam Tunnels' chain. If you dump them, you cannot continue with the next quest.
It's only after completing the quest & receiving the reward that one should feel comfortable in dumping quest items. Case in point - those same Notes I mentioned above remain in your Inv until you destroy them; but serve no purpose after the whole quest chain is complete.
