Bah...subscriptions...

Someone told me yesterday that people have been saying this should be a free to play game because of the lack of content. Any thoughts?

I think it would be tough to fund regular content updates (patches) on box sales alone, and I, for one, don't want to have to wait til the release an expansion for new stuff.

Have fun, do it well, and share your knowledge.

RE: DDO Billing Announced... 9 Feb 06

People will always want something to be free as opposed to paying for it. Personally, I have no problem paying $15.00 a month for the game as it is. True, I'm a "take my time" kind of player - but I've been in the Beta since the end of October & I've not seen all the content that currently exists. Most of it, sure - but not all. I haven't gotten bored with the content or material. The game is different on the classes and races you play - and then the builds you create with each character. The Halfling Fighter/Sorcerer I had was a much different experience than playing my Paladin or my Cleric.

Most of the people who are yammering for free content are those who probably fall under the "power gamer" label. They rush through everything like it's some kind of race with a prize at the end - and they are always disgruntled when they reach that end-goal.

Not to mention the point that Turbine has said we've only seen a fraction of the quests in the Beta. I'm not sure if I swallow that line totally ( would it not make more sense for these unseen quests be tested? ) but it certainly shows that more content will be coming. I think Turbine is aware that the Monk class would be a great addition - as well as Half-Elves, Gnomes, Shifters, prestige-classes, and a whole host of other classic D&D features. Turbine says they are coming - and I really believe them that they are working on that material to keep long-term interest in the game.

I'm probably going to get a 6-month subscription. I figure that by then I'll have a pretty good handle on what Turbine intends as a long-term goal for DDO. Either it'll flourish & I'll continue to pay - or it'll be withering on the vine & I'll stop playing. But, I'm willing to pay fifty cents per day to find out where it's headed.

I'd pay $15 a month for DDO. To me it's worth it, the game experiance is just great and they can take it so much farther. I have no had a problem with lack of content yet, there always seems to be something to do and another challenge to face and they are already working on more content that will be patched in later, new classes, races, raids.

Well being an old CoH junkie(see sig) the monthly fee doesn't bother me at all especially not with free content updates. I know however that they had said that some expansions would be large enough that they would require the purchase of a different box new box for the expansion... which may or may not bother me. I had no problems springing for City of Villains because of the content upgrades, I just hope they dont charge the fee and then start putting out some free content and a bunch of boxes that really aren't much of an expansion. Although my raging case of altitis will probably keep me entertained with the current content for quite some time.

Pay to Play

I am not a big fan of pay to play, especially where you have to also pay for the box.

However, that being said, it is the way of any of the good games out there. So ever since DarkSpace I have been paying and playing. How else am I going to get my fix? By playing limited server MS garbage? (haven't looked at them since Mech Warrior)

Of course we were spoiled when Dynamix produced a couple of games that could handle a multitude of players. At one count we had a hundred players on a server. To me it seems that they were the fore runners to MMO technology along with the makers of Quake.

Subscription fees don't really bother me. I would honestly rather pay a small monthly fee than have to buy a new box every few months. And that $15 a month really does save me a ton of money in the long run (yes I am an addict!)

I was never a big fan of game subscriptions either, and I still don't agree with them, but there are some games I want to try so bad that I am willing to bite the bullet and swallow my pride. :)

It isn't pride you are swallowing, it is an addiction you are feeding... and a pretty cheap addiction at that!

Indeed.
My caffeine addiction costs me more per-month that DDO will. When you stop to think about it, we really pay much more for asinine things in the course of a month than a subscription.

RE: DDO Billing Announced... 9 Feb 06

I would rather pay 15$ a month and play on servers that are upkept and maintained rather then servers that will just lag and crash and can't handler the amount of people on them. Because that 15$ just isn't for conetent and expansions.

I think most people who don't agree with subscriptions don't understand that. The servers are expensive to run and they do constantly need upkeep with the amount of work they're getting.

And it's not like it's very hard to fork over 15$ a month. In one hour of work I can afford that, so why not pay such a small fee to keep a game running smooth and keeping it updated.

14 more days boys and girls...

Great now I'm depressed. I figured out about how much I spend on coffee smokes and booze in a month and if figured if I quit all that I could pay for about 9 and 2/3 accounts at the $15 dollar rate...

Heh habbits cost money, then again everything does. If I calculated all the money I spend on booze, coffee, smokes, drugs a month, I's somewhere around 400$ to 600$, but then again each is a different habbit with itss own values and negatives. Playing video games is just another habbit we have to pay for.

I understand completely what it costs for server upkeep etc... (it's kinda what I do for a living)

The only argument I have is that Guild Wars did it, so why can't the rest of them? I know that Guild Wars was quite successful, and has made enough revenue to keep up their servers. They intend to have us pay for expansions which they intend to release about ever 6 months (ANet, it's almost a year now and no Factions...) so, even if I paid $100 a year to play a free online game, that is still less expensive than $50 + ($15 * 12) = $230. Somthing just doesn't add up to me here.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not protesting (well, actually I am), but the fact of the matter is that I don't run things and if I want to play these games, I am gonna have to pay. So, as much as I hate to do it, I will conform and cough up my hard earned bucks to play the games I want to play.

My biggest fear is that developers will use it as a cop out so that they can release a half finished or poorly put together product. If you release a game that you are going to let people play for free, then you gotta be pretty darn sure it's gonna earn it's keep. Whereas if you charge someone to play a game, all you have to do is get enough diehards playing that it can support itself, regardless of the quality.

Ok, I'm gonna stop now...
