| What do we keep from Doom 2? |
|

I played Doom 2 quite heavily back in the day, if I had to pick any feature to be implemented from Doom 2 into Doom 3, I'd easily say the BFG. What are your thoughts? Weapons, levels, strafe walking, silent weapon usages, what should be held over into the Doom 3?

Sweet.
I loved Doom2, it’s the game that introduced me into FPS games.
For me it’s hard to look back that far to the game that started this addiction for me and say “that was the best part”, I don’t think I can. I hope to walk into the game and have the same “wow” that Doom2 gave me. Perhaps it’s time to play it again and figure out just what made it so fun.
But mostly I would say this. The sheer simplicity of the game, along with the feel of it was perfect. You could concentrate on strats and how to approach a situation. I loved that. As long as it’s paced the same I should get back into the swing of it.

i agree, simplicity was great. I was a competitive player yes, but strategic... no. I just did what was instinctual in Doom 2, not what was more thought-inducing. Perhaps thats what I didn't mind levels with only SSGUNs in a big round circle.
Hmm!

Well I am still working on my uber article that all must read and agree with.
However simplicity doesn’t mean lack of depth. Far from that, if the core game play is deep simplicity only increases that depth, and I would go so far as to say EXPONENTIALY, and I will stand by that.
/commence lame ass analogy
You meet a girl, she looks good with all the fancy clothes on and all the make up. You get involved, and then you realize there is nothing there.
That’s the issue. Simplicity is never a bad thing, you need to stick to what is best at the deepest level. You can pile on all sorts of stuff, and it will generate sales. But it won’t keep people.
/back to the game
I have been crappy at allot of games, and godly at some. Yet my skill never held relevance to my enjoyment or dedication to a game. If anything it took away from it.
So what is depth in simplicity? Is it honing a few skills to their utmost? I would say no. But nor is depth in complexity by honing loads of skills but never mastering one. Depth in a way shape or form (and this is my opinion and only mine) is putting a massive amount of options into a few amount of rules, then topping it off with situations that make you push those to their limits… while yet always realizing another option latter.
/back to simplicity
Doom2 has stood the test of time, so have most of ID’s games. If this game is a “back to the basics but milk them for all its worth” style ID game. It will be great.
GIVE ME BACK DOOM2

I still play DOOM II, it's a bad habit like a crack addiction to me, I just can't get away. You couldn't just go in a room with guns blazing. You had to form a strategy. Each room in a level was like a new challenge. The game always kept your finger on the trigger. The same applies to DOOM 3. DOOM 3 is very intense and that is something that I expect an FPS to be. iD software did a great job, and I cannot wait for the expansion.

Yeah, about Arachnotrons....Why couldn't they have kept those over for Doom3? I heard because of the limited physical space in Doom3 like the narrow halls and stuff, but why not introduce them in at least Hell, it would make a great cutscene having you walk into an area with an Arachnotron all tuned up for D3 with only a pistol.
