OK. i am planning on pre-ordering the game... the limited edition that is...and i know it has all the bonuses and crap. The one thing i'm worrying about is, if i pre-ordered the game online, when will i get the ten day beta thingy? Will i get it right away? a code in the email, or will i have to wait a week or so?

When I preordered, I received my 10-Day pass via email shortly after my order was placed. I think it was within minutes.

As the previous poster said, the keys can come within in minutes. Our Guild Destroyers of Hope, just finished our 10 day beta (wish there was more time) and are rarin and ready to go on the 24th.
Be advised that after you create your 10 Day Beta account that you will need to create a new account for the Head Start. I used the same login for all the beta's and stress tests/Previews, but was required to create a new logon for the Head Start.

One last item of note regarding preorders...
If you preorder & get a 10-Day pass, make sure to create your characters on the Vandalis server. The other two ( Orien and Kundarak ) are being shut down this Sunday night - 2/12. This is due to the end of the main-Beta for DDO, and only preorders with 10-Day passes will be able to continue on the new server.
This is not to be confused with the early-accses play, however. That begins on 2/25. :)

So, if I just got a 10 day beta pass I can still get in on the vandalis server to use it up until the 24th?

Yes.
The Vendalis server is the only one still existing. Orien and Kundarak have been closed and wiped.

V. will be open to all 10-Day preorder subscribers - and I'll be there probably some time tonight with a new cleric.

Careful....
Not every company sends out the beta key within hours.
I would order by voice and inquire about the key before ordering.

And then you will only have to go a few days before you can get into the real live game. Ahh the thrill of making a perminate character!
