How will the level design/shadows effect 1v1 gameplay? Will we see more intricate trappings in competitive games or will it simply be another relatively straight-forward time powerup, kill player style 1v1 game?
How do you feel?

I am so hoping its not the same deal we play.
But sadly dropping detail tricks will be used… so part of that is void.
I hope this breaks the mold, and if it does count me into the mold. The better question is “will people accept a new setting

I think id said that turning down the lighting detail in DooM 3 makes it harder rather than easier to see. Turning it all the way down leaves you with an almost completely black screen.

Thats wonderful- the shittier your computer is, the harder it is to see at all! Fair and balanced gameplay for all ;0.

I like the change from having to make it look crap regardless of how good your PC is to get a level playing field. I'm sick of picmip5/vertex light/low detail.

Yes, to compete im multiplayer you do have to lower your settings (unless you happen to have some super computer that can keep your 150 fps from dropping to 60 or 90 or what not during the fights in high detail).
I'll agree that it would be nice to compete in high detail... but unfortunately when your computer lags up in multiplayer... the other players dont lag with ti like singleplayer monsters might :).

you have to prepare for worst case scenarios...
i turn my details in 2k4 down because while i get good fps most of the time, every once in awhile it'll hit areas where it gets cut in half or worse... i'd rather have plain looking textures and never drop under 30 fps than have everything look pretty and go into strobe light mode a few times a game...
it sounds like iD is just forcing people to upgrade even further =\

Actually, now that I've played the game I've found that it's surprisingly good for framerates. Better than ONS in UT2004. I've also found out that hiding in shadows is a total waste of time, because people can turn them off and have everything in perfect light. As far as multiplayer is concerned there are no shadows :(. I had judged the visibilitly stuff from the alpha, where turning off lighting meant no lights rather than no shadows.

I found that camping certain weapons and armors will win you alot of matches. Waiting in key parts of the map can be a huge advantage- when your crouching in the dark, guarding a frequent used elevator - with a rocket launcher. :P Always works.

But I have heard the same from other sources.

Yeah, those 2 can be a deadly combo. 1 hit with rox then pull out the minigun and it's over. However weapon switch is somewhat slow compared to some games, as well as the load up spin of the minigun being insanly slow. But Like i said, it's almost certain to give you a frag if you have some aim going on.
