First thing that needs to be said, this is NOT World of Warcraft. Rogues are not going to be the damage dealing machines that they are in every other MMORPG in existence. Rogues do a good ammount of damage should you build them correctly, but no way are you going to be the top damage dealers. Rogues are basically just around so that they can give you bonus experience for Disabled Traps & Hidden Doors being found. They are also useful when it comes to locks, but other than that they're just there in order to do a little bit of damage. While the potential to do a great ammount of damage is there, you will most likely die in one hit should you pull off damage like that.
Also Dexterity does not have to be your most prominent stat. Consider you Charisma because you get that wonderful skill UMD and also when a monster turns on you and is about to hit you for 47 damage that you can use diplomacy and he is gonna go back to attacking the Fighter. You can't forget Intelligence to help you Search & Disable Devices. Then you got Wisdom so you can actually spot the secret doors and the traps.
Basically what I'm trying to say is anyone who hasn't played a rogue on Pen & Paper, heads up, cause this is alot diffrent from any other rogue in any other MMORPG. Goodluck.

I plan on playing a rogue with my second character. I want to learn more about how to play the correctly before I create one though.
The info you provide is going to be a big help. Although I still have a lot to learn about them.
And WELCOME to the site!

Been mostly playing Rogues in the 10 day Beta and the Launch version. Here's a few things I've learned so far (only 2nd level):
1) Tumble, tumble, tumble and ... oh yeah, tumble. Tumbling is your friend. Not only does it get you out of trouble fast when a enemy targets you, it works well when trying to attack those Kobolds that are always jumping backwards, just tumble towards them to get there fast. I also took the Dodge feat which I think helps your AC when tumbling in combat (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong).
2) I've picked up a +1 Rapier and I plan to take the Weapon Finesse feat at third which should add to the attack bonus for the rapier. The feat uses your Dex bonus instead of Strength for the to hit bonus. The Two Weapon Fighting feat is not bad either.
3) When being targeted by a more powerful foe, I will attempt to tumble away and try and tumble past the most powerful (and health) tank in the group. Usually the enemy following you will stop to attack the one you just tumbled past at which point you tumble in behind for a flanking sneak attack.
4) A parties magic users will usually stand back from the melee to fire off spells but sometimes still attracts attacks. I try to keep an eye out for this and when it happens I will quickly tumble between the two and then lead the attacker away to one of the tanks .... did I mention that tumbling is a rogues best friend?
5) Voice Chat is very helpful to quickly inform party members that a trap is in the area. By the time I've typed a warning, someone has usually already set the trap off.
6) When battling Bosses or particularly nasty foes, take you time to sneak in behind for the sneak attack. With the rest of the party in the mosh pit in front of the foe, you won't be adding a great deal by just whacking away with everyone else. You'll get much better results if you can sneak in behind.
7) Go with at least a 14 Int. In the Beta my rogue had a 12 int and I had a hard time with disabling traps, it's going much better with an int of 14 now.
8) One more thing. It's a good idea to max out your Search, Spot, and Tumble skills. I max out Listen too but not sure exactly what effect that has in the game.

Very nice tips.
But just one question... if I make a rogue, should I take tumble?

LOL! Teh suck!
Anywayz, thanks for the hints. I will be playing a rogue in my fAmilies party...fun fun fun. I think that the rogue has a very vital role and thats what I look for in a Game. (*cough* coh I played a controller, very vital)
I am planning on taking the Weapon finesse skill and using a rapier as well. Mainly because I will have like a 14 or 15 dex and a lower strength plus being an elf I want to be able to cash in on that bonus with the rapier.
Later I think I will go TWF but that will be later.
I will keep everyone updated on how it goes.
Pinnacle (My server of love)

I think you'll enjoy it. My rogue has taken over my Sorc for my favorite char now. You are very vital for disarming traps, as well as finding all the secret doors, and getting past locked doors where all the extra loot is. I also have my int at 14 for the extra skill points, which I also found out is the minimum for activating runes in certain quests. At higher levels if you keep up your UMD skill you can act as a wizard/cleric of last resort with wands and scrolls. I also actually went TWF out of the gates, and at second lvl picked up fighter for the bonus feat. and did weapons finesse, and now that my attack bonuses are back up and the sneak attack damage against humanoids, I can be right up there in total kills as well. Seriously lots of fun.

The only thing I don't like about the rouge and it isn't actully the classes fault. Its that you always seems to get one gun how mofuka you thinks he's king shit and run ahead and trigger every trap and then they die and expect me or someone else to run their god damn stone to the shrine. Waste of my god damn time, I'll pick their stone up but I'll take them to the shrine when I need to rest.
I've already had a few people bitch at me because I won't take thier stone to a shrine because of their stupidity, but you know, I've never had a rogue be hate me =P

Yea but thats why you need to find one good rogue and hang around :) By the way I am playing on Adar, along with the rest of my family. Names Thell Swifthand, I can usually be found with Camysha and Tomeoz Longsword. So if I am not on party or you need a party on that server and we have room just give me a shout.

Yeah which actually makes a good tip...
Watch your rogue! Sometimes, like if you play with me, your rogue wont have a mic to warn you of traps, and even if they do have a mic they will react themselves before the warning comes. So first watch your rogue, does he/she stop suddenly and start looking around(searching)? If the answer is yes dont go past their position. They might have just found a secret door, but you dont know that. Wait and find out. Second watch the text, if you see Trap, or trp or trsp or something that could have been the word trap, but they might have been trying to type too fast, if you aren't fighting, wait, going forward will probably set off the trap. If you open a small room and the rogue says trap, dont go run in and grab what is on the pedistal, or open the chest. You will probably be setting off said trap, and either get yourself and/or everyone else killed. Thirdly. if your rogue says, this room has lots of traps let me clear them. Wait at the room enterance, dont run in and set off the spike/gas/blade trap and make everything more difficult, than if you had waited a minute or two. Lastly if your rogue finds a secret door, prepare for combat. For example I found one last night, just myself and another party memeber were there, everyone else was tooling around. My party member opened it, and unleashed a troll and a scorpion, we were immeadiately smushed. The other party members came to "help" and one by one were also smushed. If everyone had been there, we would have killed it the first go around. Hope that helps

Its not even always the rogue who triggers evrything it could be a fighter or a cleric or any god damn class. There always just seems to be one person who won't let the rogue do their job.

Here's how I did my Rogue Right.
With 18 in dex and Weapons finesse coming soon, this guy is quite a little sneaker. Get your party to wait for you, and sneak ahead into the room. Get around as many traps and monsters as you can, but don't go too far. Spot the highest level opponent, and slit his throat open. You'll be spotted at this point. Call your team ((Our code is a simple "1" in the chat screen)). The fighters should come running, as long as they're worth their weight in meat shields.
Tumble past your running blocks and get up. Diplomacy should make the enemy turn around and attack your fighters. That's what they're there for, anyway. Whip out your bow and start pouring it on.
If the fighting is too tight, sneak in and slit them from behind again.
Regroup, repeat.
Another thing that is fun, when sneaking ahead, should you have an elf, or a halfling along, they'll get the sense that there is a trap. Once they find it and it's already disabled, you know you've done your job right.

I'm pretty sure this has been mentioned but... Rogue is 80% support in this setup. Yes there is ALWAYS atleast one person in the group that will run even if you yell "TRAP"! But this game is 100% group based. Try to teach them the problem... and in higher levels the negative xp for dying is enough to help the lesson along. Just try to be a good sport sneak up grab stone and run to nearest shrine.
You don't have to be faster than the bear.... you just have to be faster than the other guy....

It's funny. My rogue is starting to get 100% respect and Captin is even getting a small fan basis. Not only do I yell at people for running into traps, I tell them I hope they kill them and when they do they can res to a tavern heal up and come back and then sit their ass and wait.
And I still get respect. Not only that people are actully starting to listin to me. I jsut took a group through part 3 of shan to kor and disabled every trap. Didn't miss one and everyone was calling me a bad ass and on mic were saying things like "Cap you ever need a group you come to me!"
Not only am I good at what I do, I'm a sutiable fighter too, I usualyl rank high in the kill departments and I'm not even close to having him where I want to be.
It seems if you let people kill themselves off and them belittle them a little, they start to like you *shrug* Who knew.

Lol there is something about Shan To Kor, I ran that once with Sana and everyone was overly impressed that I was taking out the traps like a fly on honey, and then last night I was with another group that will go in a "disaster is fun" post here in a little bit, but people we ooo and awing that the rogue did his job. It's like people running that quest have never seen a skill/twf rogue build before or something, because it is the only place I have seen people go crazy ga ga if you can disable the traps.

Drat! I learned a little too late and maxxed the DEX only on my alt. Had I known of the importance on other stats (INT, WIS, CHA) to do the job, would have chosen wiser at creation time. He's kinda nerfed now as a pale version of a fighter that can hide and sometimes find doors/traps. If the quest is over his level, finding traps is a lost cause (even with skill boost) and disbling isn't possible if you can't find the control box...
Thinking of re-rolling him before I get too much invested in his training.
