RE: Computer shuts off when going into certain areas

Hmmm, my post didn't come through, I'll try and give it another go. My friends computer shuts down after we are in an instanced area trying to go through a portal, i.e. from the cursed lands to the black curtain. This never used to happen, and his computer can run BF2 and WoW, his graphics card is an ATI 9600 and his processor is an Athelon XP/64, he said he is going to update his drivers, but he doesn't think that is the problem. The part that sucks for me is that he is a real WoW fan and has been giving GW a chance but is getting discouraged. Anyway, if anyone knows why this is happening any help would be appreciated.

RE: Computer shuts off when going into certain areas

This was happening to me alot after the factions update. I'd be playing and having no problems, then all of a sudden a hard crash would occur. Had me stumped for about a week considering there was no hardware changes nor driver changes in quite a while on my part. Finally I was reading around after getting frustrated about it and read up on how power supplies can go bad after a while. So I grabbed a good power supply and threw that in the computer and haven't had any problems since.

Now that i think of it there has been a large increase in glitches since that update. Some of which havent existed before the update.

Well, its not the drivers, he just updated them and once again going from old ascalon into regent valley hard crash. I told him about the power supply (is that the cord from the computer to the socket?) and he said maybe, strangers things have happened, but because of WoW and BF2 and being fine, it sure seems strange. Anyway, thanks to those who posted trying to help, and I'll keep you informed if we find out anything else. It is bed time.

The power supply is the thing that the power cord plugs into. It can be unscrewed/removed relatively painlessly. (It only plugs into one part of the motherboard, 2 if the fans on the power supply plug into the motherboard as well.)

i had a similar problem with ut2003 i had 240 watt power supplt and changed it for a 300 watt and it ran fine but that might not be the problem. it might say on the side of the power supply.

most of the time it means that you ether have not enough mb ram too keep it running or you have too manny programs on while playing GW.
could also be a bug tough.

Could be the powersupply as stated above. If the computer just cold turns off then that is a good place to start. Anything less than about 300W is not great for computers today.

Also, since you say it is a problem when he zones it could have something to do with the RAM. Get him to run memtest86 overnight, if it shows any problems it's probably time to replace that as well.

RE: Computer shuts off when going into certain areas

Hello,

I've met one one person who had the same problem when zoning.

His computer often crashed when we tried to run his charracter through some missions like trying to get him to kryta gates - we tried that location few times :D and always he crashed just before entering Gates of Kryta or maybe i seen him just before entering (lag or smthing)

So we worked out simple solution but it may not work for you. Before zoning he stopped far from teleport so i was zoning him and he never crashed.

But later we met that problem in Magumma cooperative missions and in THK - like 10 tries in a row and it happened randomly after entering or in a middle.

I noticed that in some missions my computer uses lots more memory than in other and that can be a problem when your RAM is "just enough" , also noticed that when u try turn around very fast my disk starts to work and game chokes... (i have only 512 MB)
This may happen with even the simplest configurations when u load system, most of the time windows use around 150 MB just for themselves and if u run also firewall and antivirus it can get +150MB or even +350MB when u use Panda software (tested myself on clean fresh system).
512MB of RAM can be not enough :D.
And when windows run out or free RAM memory it statrts to use SWAP file which looks like choking(slideshow) while turning around. And when SWAP file is used, you may experience random disconnects because your computer is not responding to server in apropriate time intervals. This is caused by the way of communication between server and client computer. It is called time-dependant communication.
Hope that helps :D.

I agree with the common assumption that it may be the power supply. Mine went whilst playing Half Life 2. It would just keep shutting down. I worked out what it was when I could smell an electrical fire. XD

512 is more then plenty too make GW work, my other pc has only 128 MB ram and can easely run GW.(this one has 1045MB ram so i dont have too worry)
and for what i see, you're just running too mutch on the back ground.
my other pc only uses 16 MB too run everything i nead, close some programs and never let an download program running while using GW(can cause the lag and can even make errors, even with my strongest)
if you have the swap, just close some more programs and click the x on the baloon so it stops doing that.(if your pc responce atleast)
when you hear your cd-rom turning without any reason means that your windows get convused of all the data, windows will then search what he neads too do.(that's wy it will shock all the time)
any problems?, if you got some, just say it and i'll see if i can help.

yep, my power supply is completely ruined, I have to get a new one soon, I'm on my old computer and not playing Guild Wars at the moment.
