I, for one, am tired of saying "good game" after every match on the pubs. A lot of time it was a bad game or just a decent game, not a good one. Recently I've stopped saying it. Some think I am a jerk for not saying it and that annoys me. After winning five or so games in a row without saying good game I finally lose one. The guy that won says good game and then "oh so its not a good game when you lose? Well thats just fine." This guy really made me angry with his "holier than thou" attitude! If he had been paying attention he would have noticed I never said it when I won! Sorry, just had to blow off some steam. Its fine in a ladder or competitive match but lets stop with the good game stuff in the pubs, alright?

It's two letters and a simple display of good will... being polite, you know.
Personally, I always say it. It says alot about a person when typing two letters is too much of a hassle. It's like not saying "hello" or "good bye" in real life, or shaking hands, whatever.

I just can't stand the same meaningless phrase game after game. Not every game is good, its a fact and I wish it was saved for good games because now it has no meaning. I enjoy talking after a match if I have something to say about it.
"That was a close one."
"You played well that round."
"Nice lock down on the DD and 100s."
"Some nice combos there ______."
Something that actually applies to the match at least, please!

Then just say something else when you have a good game.

I dont even think when i do it anymore, it just happens.
To sound a bit on the supasta side of things, I do say it a lot to lessen the blow of beating people up over and over.

I watched K Stryfe Play a Pub DM and he won 1 v 1 match 30 to 1 (lucky one, omg rofl) and he goes gg, yah it actually feels like the guys being a smart ass when you get owned like that, you know he's laughin' on the other end. Getting owned like that, one would probably rather have him say nothing, you know Stryfe didn't mean it, I mean damn wth, he knew it wasn't gonna be a gg from the moment he started, might as well have challenged himself. (of course I understand not many can challenge his abilities lol) but most peeps, owning that bad need, to go to some more advanced players, instead of picking on easy comp. Whats the point except showing off and the smart ass GG stuff, I mean 30 to 1, I'd get mad hearing GG. I mean GG. Aint you all tired of hearing GG in a game thats not a GG. I mean Good God. 30 to 1 aint a GG. OK Gotta Go. Hope you all have some GG's...:)

Thats ok, as long as you don't say anything offensive, most people don't mind.

Good game runs deeper than the literal meaning. It's a sign of you being polite, appreciating the people you played against. I say it after every game, even if I get beaten.

I type gg if I had a good game. I type bg (should be obvious) if I don't ;)

It's just perception. What you think is a good game may be totally different from your opponent's view of the what 'good' is. So you'll never really find a bottom line where the phrase is perfectly placed for both parties.
However, it's also not to be taken too literally. It's not uncommon to beat someone 50-0, but you say 'gg' anyway. It's not as if you're saying "hey man, you were a damn good opponenant, and you gave me a really close game, good job!" you're more or less saying "you stuck it out, i commend you for it". In which you should, because its damn hard to get beat by 50 points in a 10 minute period and not leave the server, that takes a lot of commitment. Because of this, I feel they deserve some sort of comment and for me, 'gg' suffices.
If you get mad when someone says 'gg' to you, the problem doesn't like with the phrase itself, but your inability to cope with losing or the aggrevation of seeing someone lose. Or perhaps when you say 'gg' after a game, you're the one laughing at your opponent and you don't like the idea of it happening to you. After I say 'gg' after beating the sin out of someone and that person replies with 'yea right, whatever'. He's obviously not learned anything from his loss, therefore not worth my time.
If you're not gonna learn something from your loss, you have no reason to be playing someone better then you. If you lose 0-30 then you sure as hell found some mistakes you should be correcting in your next game, and if the other person says 'gg' you should say 'damn right, it was', learn from the mistakes you made, come back and play em again.
Having a problem with the phrase 'gg' just sounds like an overly emotional person and it's hard to play with someone that gets so bent out of shape with something so consistently spoken during the game. I simply choose not to play with people like this, and it suits me just fine.

In large games rife with kids bickering with "pwned ur mom f-ck u faggot" while chatkilling and spamming flak and plasma all over the place calling "hackz" on whoever's winning, I think a simple "gg" is a nice gesture that promotes some maturity in community.
On the other hand, it can be a tiresome meaningless ritual at times, particularly when you have a frustrating game, with tons of lag, or you're not "in the zone" and miss all your shots, get shield gunned by some lucky n00b you know you could have killed, etc. Of course it's allways easy for the winner to be like "GG!!!!!" he could care less what it was like for everyone else, and will allways think he just kicked ass and played a great game, even if all the other players were n00bs, or lagged, or he just got lucky.
I usually try to say it anyway just to be a good sport. I think most gamers would have more fun if they tried to be friendlier. The pros that just respond to everything with "heh." are just as guilty as the trash-talking kids in this repect.
