Tradeskills!!!

I am a tradeskill guy. I had a Human Paladin Grandmaster Blacksmith in EQ on the Ayonae Ro server. I enjoy tradeskills for many different reason. You can make your own gear, you can make extra platinum, and you can break up the every day monotony of grinding out levels.

I realize that not everyone likes tradeskills, but I am hoping that SOE finds a way to make them FUN in EQ2. So I am wondering who here is going to do tradeskills? What do you think EQ2 can do to make Artisans a viable alternative to just being an adventurer, what do they need to do to make tradeskills fun???

Keep in mind, making them easy doesn't make them fun, it just means that everyone will be able to be a high level artisan and make their own equipment thus almost completely eliminating any Artisan Economy.

Re: Tradeskills!!!

i read somewhere that making an item is based on the combat model so we will see. It sounds like it's gonna be really cool!

im gonna be a sage.

Re: Tradeskills!!!

When I first started playing DAOC, I set out to focus on being a Tradeskill specialist. It was going along in the early stages, largely because there were short quests that you could do to gain both some money and some skill at the time. Rather than just sitting down and making items over and over (don't worry, there was plenty of that as well), you had to run around and gather materialsto make a specific item an NPC Master requested.

What killed the tradeskills for me in DAOC, was that the equipment a crafter could make was costly, and (until they finally came out with Spellcrafting and other additional tradeskills) the crafter-made gear was generally considered inferior to what people could get as drops. Whatever EQ2 does do to crafting to make it more viable, they need to make it possible for crafter gear to be superior to what people can go get off a monster. I mean, there should be stuff out there that is better than crafter gear to be sure, but for the aferage player they should be able to purchase some gear that is better than at least half of the drops.

Just a couple of thoughts.

Re: Tradeskills!!!

That won't be a problem in EQ2 since in EQlive the cultural armor was excellent armor for the average player (even if it was pricey). The Heraldic armor that my smith created was just about the best a player could get in his 40s and it was good to last you well into your 60s unless you were getting the Planar drops. When the Lost Dungeons of Norrath expansion came out that changed everything however.

I believe the items you can craft in EQ2 will be better or at least equal to most items you can find as loot off MOBS except for the rare or raid type loot. However, in order for an artisan to remain competitive within the game, SOE must continually add recipes for higher end items as more and more higher end rare/raid/artifact loot is found in the game.

Re: Tradeskills!!!

I didn’t utilize much of the trade skill system in EQLive. Depending on what I thought my character would need, fletching, Baking, Poisons, I used these to try to be as self sufficient as I could. In retrospect what would make trade skills fun for me would be to do away with what made trade skills a bore in EQLive. “Button Mashing” I didn’t have the patience for this, but groaned through to get what I needed.

Of course we already know that trade skills in EQ2 will be like a “mini-game,” not just, hit the combine key. I am going nuts over that, its going to be fantastic, but . . . on with the topic at hand.

I think that an added extra bonus for me, would be to add Quests for certain components. An example would be to loot a partial Spell scroll after a kill, and have it spin off into a story line peppered with riddles and/or puzzles to solve. I would enjoy that.

Either way what I have read on trade skills so far, I am excited about, and plan on working this part of the game this time.

Re: Tradeskills!!!

The action/combat/tradeskill wheel concept the devs have been talking about sounds really cool. It really can't be much worse than the click-fest of EQL's tradeskills. So I'm hoping this new system is as intuitive and interactive as what's been promised. I have yet to see any screens on the tradeskill interface however. Also, from what I've inferred from reading is that you will only be able to master one tradeskill archetype per character. That should help disperse the work among the crafting community and prevent people from becoming too self-sufficient.

My big wish for tradeskills would be to have no "no-drop" ingredients in the recipes. All ingredients should be tradeable, promoting adventurers to gather resources and turn a quick profit by selling to crafters.

I also think that crafted gear (depending on the craftsmanship) should always be noticably more durable than its MOB dropped counterpart. For example, chain mail crafted from an outfitter(?) should have a considerable higher armor rating than chain mail dropped from a slain orc.

Really, just more emphasis on quality craftsmanship over random loot would be refreshing.

Re: Tradeskills!!!

Yes there are players selling 6 slot bags all the time now, however as a crafter in this game and in EQlive, 6 slot bags just aren't going to cut. I want to see some better 8 or 10 slot bags in the game. Space is a premium when you are crafting.

Re: Tradeskills!!!

Normally I hate tradeskills with a burning passion in just about any MMO. However, in Ultima Online, I did have a grandmaster fisherman and grandmaster Tinker. I was feeling masochistic when I made those characters though. Some teenagers listened to angsty music and cut themselves, I made a fisherman. Go figure.

Anyway, I enjoyed tinker on that game, and I thought I'd enjoy droid engineer in SWG, but neither of those classes ever fulfilled my fantasy of my perfect Tradeskill.

I'd love to have some gnomish tinkering skills that not only allowed me to craft, but then use my crafted items effectively in battle. Basically I want inspector gadget by way of gnomish tinkers.

Oh well, we can't all get what we want :)

Re: Tradeskills!!!

I didn't do much in the way of tradeskills in EQLive, just found it too boring and mundane, so I did only what I had to.
However I see the tradeskills in EQ2 being a much more immersive and enjoyable way to spend your time. I plan on trying them out and my 14yr old son who LOVES doing tradeskills can't wait
