Hi Gonzo106 and welcome to the forums,
By the sounds of things your Guild Wars installation has become corrupt, the only way I see to fix said problem would be to uninstall and then reinstall Guild Wars. Now im not too much of a tech wiz at things, so just consider this a bump so someone else can come and help, however uninstalling and reinstalling there are no drawbacks other than having to download the updates again, so it doesnt hurt to try... just remember if you have screenshots to back them up.

Welcome to Gameamp Gonzo!
Like Osmosis said, you should try re-installing Guild Wars on your system, it is possible that some of your files have corrupted during patching and so it is regualarly trying to repair them, so try re-installing 1st and if it doesn't solve your problem then post back here =)

I agree, try reinstalling first. If it keep happening, then I think you hard drive may be on the way out. Have you noticed anything else strange goin on with your PC?

I might be able to shed some light on this. This has happened to me numerous times, I got worried so I was really paying attetion to what was going on when I was logging off of Guild Wars.
This is what I found.
If i log out and then exit I have zero problems.
If I just exit (via the X) in mid game, upon logging in again I get the "repairing data archive" error.
This doesnt always happen, but the only time it does happen is when I just exit the game without logging out.
So I think it is somehow tied the quick exiting of the game and not logging off correctly before exiting.

I`ll try getting out of the game the right way from now on. I`m pretty bad about not logging off first.

Just to clarify for anyone else reading this, re-installing is not required, just ensure you log off correctly and this problem will be avoided. If it does happen let it repair itself, thats why it does this, so you dont have to reinstall.

on a side note, i cant even 'X' out of the program, entire pc freezes if i do, so i logout, minimize, right click it in the taskbar, and choose exit, works fine, but annoying i cant exit after logging out

Was just gonna start a topic on this, but thought someone must've mentioned it before so did a search and voila (there is another but I found this more useful :) ). I hate waste so am 'recycling' by posting here on this thread :o
Thanks for the tips here. I'm sure I usually log out 'properly', though sometimes I get dropped. It happens far more than the times I don't log out properly. Still, I'll make sure to keep an eye out for that and try and always log off 'properly'.
:)

Concerning your problem; reinstalling isnt needed since it is the data archive that is corrputed. This file is the place where updates are stored and constantly used for storing info which is saved at the Anet servers (tahst why updates are only downloaded once).
This is what you can do:
Copy your excisting data file (summat about 1 Gb and i thought it was called gw.dat or something.) and keep it as backup in another folder (better save then sorry).
Delete the original data file in GW-directory. Run GW and let it downaload all updates again. It could be that there is a tiny bit of corrupted info in the file which triggeres the restore procedure. This might solve it.

Hi, i have been having this same problem myself for the past 6 months or so. I have contacted PlayNC support and after a while of troubleshooting they decided it was my router. However i know this isnt true because I have a roomate who has never had this problem. I have uninstalled guild wars, i always close via logging out first, i have run scan disk and defrag and now i'm out of ideas...

A corrupt data archive could be caused by loads of things, from; bad connectivity, not logging correctly, a slow computer, a disk error, and even drive defragmentation, and I'm sure the original posters problem has been sorted since it was posted in March, but we'll see if honnaja also finds the previous tips helpful.

Yeah, it's called Gw.dat, but mine is currently at 4.8Gig, such a large file won't defragment, and it no longer fits on a single-layer DVD, so I have to use WinRAR to split the file before I can back it up.
Then I delete the archive, defrag my drive, then copy the archive back - this isn't just to prevent a bad archive, it's more to do with saving me having to download 5 gig if I ever have to reinstall.

Personally, I think it's about time ANet start to section this file into equal sized smaller archives of say 700MB, then people can back each one up to a CDR.

I had to reformat and all that business lately so installed GW again.. still does it.. We have to PCs and it only does it on one of them.. I'm scared to close the GW window now. I always 'log off' from the game but it seems to dislike being closed.. does it on a very regular basis. Annoying, but it only takes 5-10 mins. to 'repair' so I've kinda just got used to it now..

My brother has had this problem for some time now, his comp seems to freeze and crash after about 2-3 hours of GW, and when he re-starts he gets this.
I was just doing a challenge mission with Guildies and was suffering from the worst lag ive had for some time, after the mission was over, my PC froze and i had to re-start, now I have this msg and im currently waiting for it to repair.
I'm no tec wiz, but im looking for a solid solution.
