So now that the game has been out for a little bit. Which do your prefer on a team: using a mic or typing? and of course I want to know why.
I myself don't care which one my teams uses, as long as everyone is using the same one. I find if most of the team is using voice I tend to forget to look down and check the chat text every now and then. I also find myself typing and chatting if the team is mixed, and well that tends to get a bit confusing for me.
How about you?

I preferr the mic mostly because it doesn't go unnoticed. Since I'm out of a mic right now it's hard for me when I play my rogue to warn people of traps and hidden doors because they arn't always paying attention.
Before each quest I have to state my rules that they must pay attention to the text at all time and that when I type "s" they must stop because there is a trap or door. I came to just the letter "s" because it jsut requires I do a search so it makes sence to me.
But it doesn't always works so I always have 1 person on mic paying close attention and when I type it and they see people still moving they notify other members for em on team speak.
With a mic it would be easier and less hassle but I make do with the text and I've been complimented on my approch by a few.

I like the idea of just typing one letter as a warning... that way you always have time to get it out.

I like using the Mic. I find that communicating is easier and you can have a whole lot more conversation, which when waiting for one teammate to get to the quest...man convo is all you have.
But i have played on teams without and with both...without is fine because everyone checks the text...and if they don't I just sum it up to "Well thats how the character would be played, running headlong into the fray without checking with comrades first"
But like i said I prefer using mic becuase its a lot easier to tell my teammates about traps and to talk to them and the rest of my family when they play

Tons, I love to talk. I don't do a lot of in character talking because the truth is the way I designed my character he doesn't talk much. This kinda irritates some of the hardcore Rp'ers but that is just the fact of the matter.

Definately mic. I am chatty, and those poor people without mics tend to get unnoticed sometimes. I love being able to communicate quickly in any situation, and I love being able to actually catch someone's personality and sense of humor "up close and personal."

Ok for those of you who use a mic, is there anyone who doesn't use push to talk?

I use hands free. If I need to keep it quiet, I have a mute switch on my mic.

One of these days I'll get a new sound card and I'll use a mic, with push to talk. I used a key to speak all the time while playing America's Army and had no problems fighting while doing so, I also talk to my husband while I'm playing so I dont think I need to subject people to that. But the real problem with talking right now is that we are in a 850 sq ft appartment. normally I play after my daughter is in bed and her room is all of 10 feet from the computer, I dont want to wake her up, also the tv is about 8 feet away in the same room so if someone is watching tv and I'm talking it is kind of distracting. So either way I probably wont use talk much until we get a house and the computer is in it's own room, and hopefully that will only be six or so months away.

I'll be the first to come out and say that I hate mics with a deep seeded passion because 90% of the individuals who I've heard use the mic can't and/or shouldn't be allowed to. For instance, in one of my groups, one individual's mic was very quiet while another's was insanely loud. Needless to say, my ears bled just so I could hear what was going on. Secondly, people with mics are usually convinced they're God's gift to the party, that they know everything about the quest, and that they should give instructions the entire time. It brings me great joy to turn off the mic option and/or watch them die. I don't see the need for them in general and I feel they're only entertaining if you have intelligent peers to joke around with. I guess overall I give mics a one and a half thumbs down.

I think mabey your just getting stuck with the wrong people heh. I may self give instructions in quests when it's needed and most people I've been with do the same. I have beenw ith a few who take it a little to far but none the less. It's good for warning of traps and events that can lead to a wipe.
Today for example if we hadn't of been with a wizard in the final part of the cult of the six today who knew what he was doing giving us instructions well we would have wiped really fast, no word of a lie.
It when you in the small easy to do quests that people start commanding every small detail that gets to me.
But on the other end I can see why they do it sometimes, you can get some pretty awful and some pretty stupid people in your party who may need it at time haha.
Just like Wizzard, eh Ozone?

I use hands free but I to have a mute button on my mic. And for all those mic haters out there, I try to do a mic test every time I am on, and i have two settings on my mic for volume plus if need be there is always voice gain to turn up and down (mine is currently set at .50 seems to work well) and because i Have a mic set with static reducer and background noise cutter I am pretty clear when I speak.
As for directing in quest, well I only do that if and when people as for it. As of yet I have yet to discover someone who didn't know at least somewhat as to what they were doing...so..so far so good eh?

So you are saying you don't like the mic's *grin*
I know what you mean about the volume though, nothing worse than joining a team and getting your ears blown away from a teammate who has their mic up to loud. I have found (so far) that if you ask that person to turn theirs down, or the other person who is quiet to turn theirs up, everyone is willing to do so. Sometimes it just takes having it pointed out to them for them to know it is messed up.
As for the push to talk... as long as you have a mute button and I don't have to hear you talk to the team, your dog, your kids, your wife/hubby, your tv, ect I'm all happy. It is just when other people's "real world" intrudes that really messes me up w/ the game. But then I have also learned that most people when asked will change it to push to talk.... Maybe people just like doing what I ask *grin*
But lately I've encountered very few teams that use the mic... Is it just me?

regardless of whether or not you can still understand the instructions on how to do it. I mean how else could have gotten to level 5?
Although on the flip side, Sanny and I were talking with Sinistraud last night, and I guess he had a guy come on mic and RP his 6 int guy. I wish I had been there because it sounded like it would have been hilarious.

I have been on a 50/50 split lately, but yesterday I was on a team with 4 other people, and none of them had mic's. They all had voice chat enabled though, and it made me feel lonely... and bossy, in lieu of this thread. lol
We had that stupid "steal the gem without killing 6 Kobold Prophets" quest, which 1 of them hadn't done before and the rest had all failed multiple times. So I guided them through it, and we passed it, and I kept thinking about this thread and the hate rant... lol! But I DID throw in a plug for Gameamp, so maybe I can be forgiven for being bossy... :P

Oh but that quest requires being bossy, if you know how to complete it. I tried to take a group through it the other day and before we went in I said quite clearly before we went in. "Be careful not to kill the prophets, if you kill 6 of them we will fail the mission and have to start over" then while in the mission I'll give a count down "If we kill four more prophets we fail the mission" etc... Then a minute later the sixth one is killed and everyone gets bumped out, and they are all "wtf I dont get it." which actually begs the question, do people not listen to what people have to say when they type? because I've tried running that mission so many times and every time I give my typed instructions they get completely ignored like I'm not even there. /end rant

I currently use Text chat. I type quickly, so its not much of a problem. Voice is coming though. It allows for some interesting RP-ing. I played with a Dwarf player that RP-ed Dwarfesque talk while typing, I figured that whispering might be good for a rogue in voice chat. However, for the time being, I'm KB-Bound.

Wow, I feel much better about the pick up team expierences I've been having *grin*. Although I really do wish I could have heard that guy Sin was talking to last night.
And I don't think it is really being "bossie" telling your team how to work a quest like stealthy repossession. If you know what you are doing, and they have failed misserable, it is just you making sure you get everyone through the quest. Now if you were telling them exactly what to do step by step, commanding they listen to you, well that would be bossie. But after teaming with you in CoH, I can't really see you doing that.

Was leading a team of well, a group of us that weren't quite able to do shan-to-kor. I mean we could do it but it would have taken forever.
But I steped to the plate, and my grouped followed every word and with a group that would have taken a long time to finish flew through the quest.
It was just a matter of me warning of traps and doors, warning of events, and how to get around the traps that can't be disabled. They listened to every word up until the nasty fire trap which they all died at except for 2 who listined to me, and of course I was able to disable it.
After I got many thanks for my job leading them. I wasn't bossy, just leading as a leader should heh.
But jeni is right when your commanding people to follow you thats being bossy. If you know what your talking about and trying to get a part through safely, thats just being a good leader.

I finally got my mic plugged in last night, and played a few hours with it. I led a group while I waited for my Giuld mates to arrive, and I actually managed to recruit 2 guys to my guild thanks, in large part, to voice.
It's awfully useful for rogues, I can tell you that. The ability to call forward about how many there are, with or without Shaman, to be able to call a halt if there is a trap, all these things help alot.
Now that I've plugged it in, I don't think I'mma get rid of it. It's just too damn useful.
Plus, I love the sound of my own voice :p

Yeah it is really nice to be able to "talk" about the dungeon you are doing... it really does help a lot, I've found.
And I wanted to Welcome Rugar to the site, and I agree with you, people do respond better to voice than chat. I think it is because we are so used to responding to voice. And if someone yells, "trap" it is hard to miss.

I only wish I could get my mke to work.
The day I picked up my retail version of the game I bought a mike. I plugged it into my soundcard, opened audio control and made the proper adjustments. Tested the mike out of game and everything seemed fine.
Then I logged into the game, opened the audi section of the options menu and attempted to test the mike and NOTHING. Since then I cannot get the mike to respond weather in game or not.

First off welcome to the site Rune.
Although I personally cant use a mic that is because I broke part of my sound card. I'm sure some other people here might have some ideas on how to trouble shoot that for you.
