I was in Temple of Ages recently and observed a conversation/flamefest about +40 year olds playing GW. One side was saying it was pathetic and sad, and the other was defending. One of the arguements against it was that some vague statistic showed that many single, pedophile men played online games. The other side said that many successful people play. I was curious as to what the good people of GameAmp thought.
Is it 'Sad' or considered 'Pedophile' to be playing online games at an older age? Are older people too mature to be playing? If you think yes, then what age is the cut-off? If no, why do you think so?

I don't think it's sad or any of that. If it's what you enjoy doing, you are gonna spend your free time doing it. Just because people think that it maybe be sad or stupid or any of that crap shouldn't keep them from something they enjoy.
However, if I were that age, I wouldn't go around and tell people that I am. That's just asking to get harassed.

As long as they are not doing anything wrong then who are we, a younger generation, to say what they can and cannot do in their spare time? If they want to spend the rest of their retirement or life playing GW or any online game then more power to them.
Edit: and the people that do take it upon themselves to set the rules for an older generation are just disrespectful and show that they weren't raised properly.

All and I mean all ages should be allowed to play ofcourse..
Who thinks that high of himself to draw a line on what age is allowed or "tollerated" to play or not...
All human beeings are free to do what they like..
And if a 60 year old guy wants to play GW, let him...
If a 60 year old guy likes to play with barbies all the time.. Let him!
Playing a game online isn't pedo at all... most of the time they will not even announce their age.
I'm not saying chatting up young girls online should be tollerated, not at all, because it shouldn't.
But saying all "older" guys are considered pedo coz they are playing a game... well that's just sick ;-)
My conclusion.. Let all play who wanna play! Let all play who have fun online.. Live and let live, play and let play

well, i dont really care the age, unless they start hiting on other players, which is so wrong, because 50% could be a guy behind the keyboard, and the other 50% is a girl, which you never know.
and when i bought guild wars, this late 40's- early 50's guy said nice choice, i play this game myself. and he didnt seem like a pedofile to me.
lol but some people say that tifa was a pedofile, as my friend made a guild to make fun of him. its pretty funny lol

That's about what I was gonna say. What happened to showing a little respect for those older than you? I know I sure do, because for the most part they know more than I do just from the many more years they've been around than me. There is always something new to learn in the world.

I find that in most casses age dosent matter. Kids can be just as mature as an adult and alot of the time 'adults' are just as immature as kids. Age is irelevent.

Oh and to counter the arguments of parents saying that they dont want their children exposed to the potential for pedofiles.. The solution is really simple: Don't let them play online games. If the parents are worried about their children then they shouldnt force others to stop playing because their children do. That just shows that the parents think too highly of their children. I mean ok, it's their kid and to them that kid is the best thing in the world, but to go out and attack others for the sake of their child is just wrong.
It's like that park in New York:
See there is a park in NY where they passed a law that an adult was not allowed to be in the area of the park without being accompanied by a child. It was a way to prevent pedofiles right? So this 80-90 yr old guy is walking and gets tired because he's old and really needs to sit down. So he sits down at the park bench and the second he does all the parents have him arrested. They had a 90 yr old guy who could barely walk arrested so they and their children could feel safer..sick isnt it?

As a 45+ gamer, who played games before most of these people were born... I would ask why in the world would that even be a subject of debate? My generation made gaming, not the current teen and pre-teen one.
p.s. i am not the oldest member of my guild either p~~

How can it be wrong for a +40 year old to want to play video games? I'm pretty sure I'll still be playing them when I'm 40. So its gonna be like "OHNO! I turned 40 today! I'm no longer alowed to play on the computer! People will think I'm a pedophile." Thats just dumb.

I'm 30 and still going strong, hell I still play pen and paper role playing as well (AD&D 2E). I don't see my self quitting any of my hobbies anytime soon just because some young kid thinks it's sad. I did this stuff when I was young and I continue to enjoy it. Why stop? If anything, I would rather play with a bunch of "OLDER MORE MATURE" players than a bunch of snot nosed mouthpiece brats (which are rampant in GW). And for the record, I have a good job, a wife, a brand new truck, my own home and not a single charge of pedophilia against me!

Hmm well if your older that 40 then you are considered a losr by stupid 12 year old noobs who prolly *kitten* themselves to gay *kitten* and are a bunch of *kitten* *kittens*. Also if I live to 40 I will still be playing video games if they exist. And the average age for pedophiles is 23-36 not 40+. 40+ is young grandfathers(not pedophiles) and married people.

No, this is not true. Not all 'pedophiles' play this game, because my dad and my pastor play. Both are married and have children and I don't think they're looking to molest youngin's. A lot of people in different age groups play this game and you can't stereotype older players for playing video games.

Hmm well since GW is a game for 13+ you shouldn't be playing anyway :'p. Also ive never ever ever ever ever met a mature 12 year old ever. That makes you the only exeption.

That isn't a fair comment. I know that there are many young people (such as myself - Don't quote this guys ;P) that arn't like this. Lots of them are nice and you'll find it's people that're 16-20 that think they can do what they want do this most of the time.
Basically. What im saying is that most people just blame younger people, saying "Stupid young idiot" and stuff. But that person probably isn't really that old. I find that it's usually people around 20 that think they can do whatever they want most of the time. But again, it's different all the time. So it might be younger players who don't know what they're doing. But just the same amount of times it's older people who think they can do anything. If you ask me, it's not someone who's young's fault. They generally don't know what they're doing and they'll learn that what they've done is wrong in time.
1337 Generation ftl ^^ The thing is, the game rating is 12+. Expect 12 year olds.

Pedophiles dont stop molesting once they are past 40... That is a sickness that never ends no matter what age.

Come on people debate yes, but dont flame each other like the people that were talked about in the original post.
Onto the subject, I was afraid to reveal my true age to my guild at first as I thought that playing at 27 was a bit too old for the game, but I found out many much older people played and I felt more comfortable revealing my true age.
I dont feel there should be any discrimination against the age of people playing games at all, if someone at the age of 40+ wants to play Guild Wars I say great, it just shows what a fantastic game this is bringing in people not only from all over the world with different races, but of different ages aswell.
I personally think having people from all these different backgrounds is great as im sure some older people will come up with ideas younger people might not have and vice versa (same goes with different racial backgrounds, but lets not get into that ^_^).

lol...both my wife and I play...we stay up many weekend nights till sunrise playin^^...before we played GW we played FFXI for almost 2 years, I actually still have my account open there and pop in every now and then to see how my old friends are doing...my son got us started on ffxi...hes in the army and that was a good way to spend time with him...we are hooked on online games and we both really like Guild Wars and will prolly play for awhile...we are both in our 50's and really never think about age as being a factor...I have made many online friends some young and some older...one thing though, they are all really nice people regardless of their age...we have played WoW and EQ2 also...and will play the next generation of games too...I think I connect with young people cause of the music...I was in a top 40 cover band up untill a few years ago...I sing and play lead guitar...I was older than most of the other members dads...lol. Listening to Sum41 and playin video games keeps you feeling and acting young...rock on peeps, see ya ingame ~.^

I never really thought about people being able to connect with their family members who are overseas or far away with a different job or something like that, Its much better than just Emails as you can actually do stuff together, very nice point you brought to the table.

Thank you for the warm welcome...playing with far off family members is a blast...we have 3 kids and they are all spread out...its really cool when we all get together and make up a full party...we all get on TS and have a ball^^

Age should not be an issue, its always down to personality at the end of the day. Some people are cool some people aren't regardless of age.
TBH the analogy used at the beginning of this thread IMO is just wrong.

o god, dont go there, i work away from home all week, then do this on weekends... and my wife doesnt play... talk about gettin in trouble :P
as for staying in touch, I got my son playing GW, and he leaves for Iraq in June, i hope via teamspeak and gw we can stay in touch easier
AND... he likes my music (aerosmith, black sabbath, kansas, foreigner, Rush, AC/DC...) and I like his (DMX, JaRule, Usher, eminem, Marilyn Manson, POD, outkast,...)
the 'old folks' still like to play and rock :)

I see nothing wrong with a 40+yo playing this game. This "younger" crowd that thinks it is sad and pathetic need to take in to account, that such online games as this didn't exist when the older crowd were the age of the younger crowd. So of course, there will be a lot of older crowd folks who always dreamed of such games and are enjoying the online game world as much as the younger crowd. In fact, there is a high probability that the "older" crowd when at the age of the "younger" crowd, probably thought the same about the once then "older" crowd getting in to some of the new "in" things of the then "younger" crowd. ....wow..that gave me a headache just typing it.. LOL
So, it is possible that the "younger" crowd of today, once they have reached the "older" crowd will themselves be keen and highly interested in to games that will come out down the road.
In fact, many times some of the "older" crowd players I have teamed with have been MUCH more mature in nature then the some of the "younger" characters I have teamed with. No where is it written that such games can only be played within a certain age range. And I agree when someone else on here stated that in many cases, that is just showing a total lack of respect for our elders no matter the age.
So, in short...sorry for the long ramble... I am in support of all ages being able to play this game. And it is absolutely ignorant of one to think that just because a 30+yo plays this game they are a pedofile.

zigzagg, I loved Final Fantasy 11, just wish there was no monthly fee. *sighs*
And a great point was made about being able to get together with friends all over and play something together. :)
