Proper Auction Etiquette

Buyer:
1.) Declare whether it is an auction or buying thread at the start. This way people arent confused and you can't yell at them later for it.

2.) Declair Minimum Bids. If it is an auction it is YOUR responsability to declair minimum bids or at least say in a disclaimer that you will not sell if price is too low. If you fail to do so then proper etiquette dictates that you must sell the item. Even if the highest bid is 1g for a perfect crystiline sword.

3.) Declair a B/O (buyout). It is also your responsability to declair a B/O as well or to say there is no B/O. If there is no B/O then proper auction etiquette dictates that you cannot declair a winner for the item until the auction ends. Even if that winner bids 1M gold, you must give people the chance to outbid the winner. A Buyout declaired at the start of the auction CANNOT be changed later on.

4.) Set an End Date. It is also your responsability as the seller to set an end date for the auction and above all to honor it. An auction should not end before or after the end date for any reason. Remember the auctioneers are doing YOU a favor by bidding for your items, not the other way around.

5.) i am bolding this because this rule is THE MOST important one of all. Never..ever..ever..ever..sell an item to an ingame player during an auction. This is one of my biggest pet peeves as well as a huge breach in auction etiquette. Even if someone ingame offers you an insanely large price for the item, you have a duty to the bidders as soon as you set up the auction.

5a.) Never reserve an item for another player unless you have put in a disclaimer at the beginning of the auction that you have the right to do so.

6.) Limit your bumps. It is ok to bump an auction 1-3 times a day but not to bump it all the time to keep it in the top 5.

7.) Limit the auctions. 1 auction at a time.

For the Bidders:
1.) Be aware of the auction beginning and end date. Do not bid on items after the auction ended or before the auction started.

2.) Be aware of any minimum and buyout prices that are set. If minimum bids are set do not bid under them.

3.) Bid only what you intend to buy. Do not bid on multiple items and then retract the bids. This is the biggest breach of etiquette that you can have as a buyer. Just as they should honor their end of the bargain, you should too. Even if you find the item cheaper in game you should pay at least a portion of the promised amount because you did cause a profit loss for the one holding the auction.

4.) Each Bid = new post. Do not edit your old bids. Make sure that everyone is aware of your new bid so that problems do not arise later on. If noone is aware of your new bid because you edited an old post and someone else wins, it is your own fault.

5.) Keep the bids public. It is really bad to send a private bid to win. Really really really bad.

For The Watchers:
1.) The only rule for people not participating in an auction is that they shouldn't interfere UNLESS the one holding the auction is giving misleading information. For example if they ask for 100k for a clean battlepick, that's there choice. They simply wont get bids. If a bidder wants to pay 1M for that said battlepick it's the bidder's choice to do so. If, however, the one holding the auction says that the battlepick is a rare item and he has the only one of its kind...a statement that is not true or misleading..then a watcher has the right to say correct the one holding the auction or warn the bidders.

What happens if you breach a rule?

Honestly..on this site..nothing. On other sites you are forbidden to hold auctions for a while or something along those lines. You do however lose credibility (not Credit but the actual thing) as either an auction holder or a bidder if you break one of these rules. That just means people wont take your auctions seriously next time and will be more likely to retract their bids. Or people wont take your bids seriously and might simply skip them over.

As an example there are some people (which will remain nameless) that have had items i was interested in bidding on but i passed their auctions because they violated one or more of these rules.

So really nothing will happen to you except people will just frown upon the way you conduct yourself.

Oh forgot one for the auction holder.

Keep the increments you set if you do set them. So dont say increments of 100g for each bid then change it to 1k because it's not getting enough gold in.

RE: Proper Auction Etiquette

good advice but... what is the purpose of making a thread on your auction when theres an auctions section of the site id rather see 5 interesting topics than 5 auctions

RE: Proper Auction Etiquette

Auctions are a big part of this site and following proper Etiquette makes it better for the Seller and Buyer. Only problem is if no one enforces the rules then what is the point. +Cred for speaking your mind on this.
