$1200 dollars...maybe down the drain

QWell I finally did it. What you ask, nope I didn't by the rings yet, that's next month. Instead what I did was I wen out and bought a new PC and LCD flatscreen moniter.

The moniter is a 17" ViewSonic monitor. For the first time ever, I am able to use 1064x1024 resolution. I no longer have to scroll right or left across a screen. No more shift+arrow to move and I am happy. The clarity is so much better that my old 15" and the size is incredibly small. I speak no geekiness on this, as I don't really know if it's awesome there. To me it is though. Plus boobs show up nicely *just joking people...no bad stuff here*.

The second thing I bought was a tower. Finally the Compaq Presarion 5400 series is being layed to *semi* rest. I am hanfing it to my fiance, and I will make her play CoH/CoV with me sometime. The specs on this computer are giberiish to me, but my brother is a tech genious...literally he is a hacker and the book brand named "Idiots Guide to..." sent him a letter a while back asking him to right a book on Computer hacking. He wrote the book, and they sent it back to him saying that they were sorry, but he made hacking way to easy. He has it framed in his house, with all the red lines in it from the company saying...this is made to easy...and this...and this. But, to quench your thirst...you other geeks...here it is. My bro said it was good (but he didn't like the video shared memory)

Specifications:
  • AMD Athion™ 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor 3800+ for TRUE multi-tasking
  • 1GB PC3200 DDR SDRAM memory
  • 250GB 7200RPM Serial ATA hard drive
  • LightScribe Double Layer 16X DVD R/RW drive with CD writer capabilities
  • Integrated NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE Graphics with up to 256MB shared video memory
  • 9-in-1 memory card reader
  • 10/100Base-T network interface
  • 56K modem
  • HP multimedia keyboard and scroller mouse
  • USB 2.0 and FireWire® (IEEE 1394) ports
  • 2 Year Full Coverage Warranty + 1 Year manufacturers warranty

Thought I'd share that while it downloads CoH on it. Which I am about to play on this raggedy old PC.

Currently I am running on 512 memory. Will it make that big a difference with it being shared?

I own an IT company so I speak geek fluently. The shared mewmory shouldnt be a big deal with 1GB of RAM, and it is a GeForce chip so you should be fine. But let us know if it's not.

P.S. how can I get a copy of that book? I'd pay for it. I can use it legitimately for my work.

RE: $1200 dollars...maybe down the drain

I checked the specs of that particular chipset and here they are....

GeForce 6150
Core Clock: 475 MHz
Pixel Pipelines: 2
Vertex Processors: 1
Memory: Usually 32/64/128MB shared DDR400

Perhaps the LE version has 256MB, I would check your hardware info (instruction manual) for more precise specifics, just because it says "up to 256MB" does not mean it actually has 256, it could simply mean if you wish to upgrade to that you can.

Although I could find little on the LE (Lite Edition) here is some more info on your video chipset.

Both the 6100 and 6150 support Shader Model 3.0 and DirectX 9.0c. The 6150 also features support for High-Definition video playback, PureVideo Processing, DVI, and video-out while the 6100 does not.

Currently the boards are slated to be available in three different varieties - the GeForce 6100 with 410 southbridge geared toward low-end machines, the GeForce 6100 with 430 southbridge for more mainstream PCs, and the GeForce 6150 with 430 southbridge for multimedia PCs. Initially, a rumor circulated that the 6150/430 pairing was recalled due to ActiveArmor and "data corruption" problems, but this was refuted by NVidia. In November 2005, the GeForce 6100 series was the only variety available in AMD socket 754 and 939 variants. As of Jan 2006 this has been rectified with cards such as the Asus A8N-VM CSM.

So it sounds like it may suffice, with the 1 gig of onboard it should be ok, if however you notice many system lockups, "Error" and/or "Low Resource" messages and glitchy or stuttering graphics, you may wish to disable your onboard and get an add-in Video Card.

I personally would get an add-on card before a problem occures, it will be better in the long run and will of course support the newer games and graphics intensive programs that are being released as well as allowing older programs to run better, as to the type? I would say your best bet is the best you can afford and your board supports, this will mean you can use the hardware longer before you have to upgrade again.

As before perhaps the LE edition has been modified from the regular edition, the instruction manual that came with your computer should tell you, otherwise use the mainboards model number and look it up online.

Yes, if you use graphics intensive programs/games or wish smooth good looking gaming at higher resolutions/FX settings, and fewer chances of "low resource" messages... upgrade to at least 1 Gig.

I have over 26 years of Computer hardware experience and am fairly software knowledgeable.

RE: $1200 dollars...maybe down the drain

Thanks for the in depth info Ana...the PC didn't really provide a manual. So that help was appreciated. As for games, i bought the PC to specifically run CoH/CoV without any other real games in mind. So far, it is running quite smoothly with all the in-game advanced graphics settings cranked all the way up.
