Just a General Warning about scammers and Gameamp..

It is my regret to inform the Gameamp community of a small (large for some) scam that has occured recently in my guild in relation to the community itself. Now i wont be giving names and if the individual that commited the act wishes to come forth and appoligize then he/she may do so. So here is the situation:

A well established member of the gameamp community recently joined my guild. He/she made good conversation with the members and seemed to be getting along fine until one of the members of my guild needed to rearrange some items and needed someone to hold on to them while he transferred them between characters (not accounts). So the individual from the gameamp community volounteered to do so.. Upon recieving the items (40k + Razorstone + Victo's Axe + several mesmer greeens from the new UW) the individual from the Gameamp community promptly left the guild and signed off taking the items with him/her.

Anyway so this is just a warning to the people of the Gameamp community: Just because someone is a well established member doesnt mean they wont be tempted by a vast amount of gold or items. Just be careful who you trust and make sure that you take plenty of screenshots in this situation.

Also to the community: If you know who it is or know that they did it or have any evidence, please withhold subimitting it or the name of the scammer. I still feel that there is hope for that individual to do the right thing and that we shouldnt destroy a well respected member of the community because of one mistake..a correctible mistake at that.

To the scammer: If you want to contact me in private about the return of the items, their value in gold (or ectos or shards), or about an apology then you may do so. I will not make any mention of your name in the public forums on gameamp.

Edit: OH! and if this wasnt a scam and just a set of coincidences that looked alot like a scam then i appologize in advance and the post will be replaced with an appology as soon as the items are returned.

The thing keeping me from scamming, besides some sense of morals, was the fact that if I did scam my name would be all over gameamp, something i wouldn't want to happen. You dissapoint me...

I agree that this is a pretty sad thing to hear. I am upset to think someone would do that from gameamp, I hope that they come to think more about it and to pay back. Respect can take a long time to build up but only a short time to lose.

It is an extremely sad thing to read. I hope that whoever it was can find it in their hearts to make amends for the situation.

Without any evidence of proof then vague talk is all we can do. Remember that on the whole the gameamp community is one of respect and sharing (whether that be information or ingame items- I know I give stuff to guildies etc), I would like to think that this is indeed an isolated case amongst any of our long standing and trusted members.

Like evil geek said is really sad to hear this. Nihil Zarathustra but i think you are doing the wrong thing not to give the name of the scammer (Note:Doing this if you are 100% sure that this person scammed the other one). Im not trying to flame the post or acussing anyone of scamming but ive already have some idiots in my ignore list that tryed to scam me and i didnt know them or have any references of them at all and if this person that youre talking about was a relieble abd trustly person i think is worts that the persons that tried to scam and had no reference at all. I hope you are getting my point of view.

I hope that person returns the items/money and all this is just a miss understandig.

Cheers all

Of course i see your POV but at the same time i am offering this individual the chance for an explination or for redemption. We've all been tempted to scam and for some the temptation is too much. I've been asked to hold on to several 100k+ items for several days and i cant say i haven't been tempted to take them especially when the owner didnt return after 3 days. Still...just because someone makes a mistake doesnt mean they shouldnt get a chance to fix it.

Apparently some people don't believe in trusting others. It's a shame that this has happened. I for one hope that this person comes forward and admits to his/her mistake and gives the items back.

Sounds more like an guild issue and not a Gameamp one. Dont really see any need to drag the sites name and reputation through the mud w/ this. You should edit the post title since it wasnt gameamp or a staff member who scammed you.

It was a member of gameamp that did the scamming. a well established and trusted one at that.

oops quoted the wrong part in my last post...

Anyways it sounds like your jumping the gun on this, and w/ no screenshots, and without knowing the full story, or the offender's identity I just see this as senceless slander. The advise is good, never let anyone 'hold' your stuff unless you can afford to replace it, and are prepared to really give it to them, but again the title makes it sound like Gameamp scammed someone..

Nihil is usually one of the most level-headed people here at gameamp. To say that he is "jumping the gun" is bull. He is giving the offender ample amount of time to fix what they did, with little to no repercussion. He isn't going around throwing this person to the dogs by revealing who it is and telling us to PM him in game to give the stuff back (like a couple of us have). So yeah, don't accuse Nihil of accusing someone with no right. =D

I know and have all of those. It is because i am trying to give the offender a chance to return the stuff or to explain his/her self that i am not posting screenshots on this site. Like i said i want to withold their identity for the time being and if i posted the screenshots it wouldn't do that now would it? :P

And dont say "edit the screenshots so the name is hidden" because i'm not good with editing software and it'll just become a mess.

Not to sound insympathetic, but..He didnt get scammed BY GAMEAMP. The items were given to this person, by another Guild member. The persons identity isnt my concern either. It is only this:

Just because you met the offender here doesn't mean he represents entire Gameamp Comunity as the title implies.

Really... you're reading this the wrong way.
The title is referring to the moral advice never to blindly trust someone even if you know the person from Gameamp.

Well let me ask you something.. if you are giving a run and the person you are running leaves without paying you and any attempts you make to contact that same person were met with silence would you say that you were scammed? Or would you say that it wasnt a scam because that person didnt go ahead and say "HAHA i scammed you"

Now you are twisting the words around to push your own point..but that aside the actions of one individual DO reflect upon the gameamp community. If i was to go around scamming people with my guild tag then eventually people wouldn't trust my guild. Just as your actions reflect upon the community, the actions of the community reflect upon you.

Welcome to the forum.

As you're new, I'll not be too harsh ;-)

This may only be a forum, but to many it's our second Guild Wars home, the friends we make on the site are often also friends in game. When you've known someone on the forum for months, I know in my experience, that person gets my trust in the game, even if we're still to cross paths.

Nihil and his guild members obviously trusted this guy/gal from the experiences shared on this forum... and I can completely understand how this situation could have arose. There was no noobiness or nievety involved. A trust has been broken, and Nihil like any good friend is giving this person a second chance. Many wouldn't, and I for one commend him.

---

Just another note: I understand Transmission's worries about the title of the thread, and it could be read the wrong way... however, after reading the initial post, any misconception is soon cleared up.

---

This problem probably needs to be aired here, as the person responsible is no longer in his guild, and has probably set him/herself as offline.

I have to agree that you should go ahead and tell us who it was that did it. By with holding the name of the member your just giving them more time to scame some more people (if they did indeed scam in the first place). You might even be pushing them to do any scamming they might want to do alot sooner then later in fear that one of the partys involved or that know who it is will go ahead and give them away.

That is true that they do have more time to scam people outside the community..but they would always have that time if they were someone who scams constantly and that this wasnt their first and last time. If they do scam someone else from the gameamp community then that other person will most likely post their name on this thread or make their own.

The reason i'm not saying the name is in case this was the first and last time they did it and if they did do never plan to do it again and they do return the items then there is no need to chase them out of the community. Had they been a scammer from inside the game i would not have hesitated to state their name..but because they have taken the time to establish themselves in this community, their hard work shouldnt be ruined because of one mistake.

Edit: If, however, i find out that this person HAS scammed again then they did not learn from their first mistake and i will give their name. Or if i find out that the person has no remorse for their actions and is shamelessly using the money that they stole...i just hope it doesnt come to that.

RE: Just a General Warning about scammers and Gameamp..

It sucks yes, but I honestly do not count this type of activity as a 'scam'.

To me a scam indicates that someone was bamboozled by a silver tongued rogue who conned them out of cash or items.

This 'scam', much like the other recent big 'scam' where a Crystalline was involved, is simply another in a case of be careful whom you trust.

The person in questioned volunteered these items and upon depositing them with said individual the 'holder' was simply over taken by the all to common human failing of greed. Yes, it is possible that the person volunteered with the intention of taking the items, but even still that does not make it a scam, it simply makes him an opportunist.

I could ask my best 'real life' to hold a sack of diamonds for me and their is a chance the same thing would occur. Human beings are weak willed.

While I am empathetic towards the person who lost the items/cash I have no sympathy for that person as they, as harsh as it sounds, got what they were asking for. Trust on that level is to be earned, not handed out at a whim.

I agree, I have never been tempted to scam someone. I have helped people transfer over 100k stuff in items and gold in one transfer. Of course they trusted me and we were in the same guild etc, but still. I have also transferred items that are worth over 100k through some of my friends, and we have never ever even thought about scamming anybody even if they werent our friends.
