Neat little chest farming equation.

I, Nihil Zarathustra, being the nerd that i am have derived for you all an equation to determine whether or not you have made a profit on a chest farming run.

Total Profit = (Total gold made from run) - (Key Costs + Opportunity Cost).

To break it down further:

Total Profit = (sum(x1+x2+x3...)) - (n(price per key) + Amount made in 1 basic farming run)

So here's how to use it.

Let's say i did a chest run in THK and got all merchant fodder worth 1k. I bought and used 5 keys and on average it takes me 10 min to do a troll farming run which makes 1k.

Total Profit = (1k) - (5*600 + 1k)
Total Profit = (1k) - (4k)
Total Profit = -3k

Now let's say i got 1 sup vigor drop

Total Profit = 30k - (5*600 + 1k)
Total Profit = 30k - (4k)
Total Profit = 26k.

Now here is another way to use the equation. Let's say i'm shooting for a sup vigor rune and i'm going to do runs until i get it. I want to know how many runs i can do before i lose gold.

Total Profit = 30k - N(5*600 + 1k)
Total Profit = 30k - N(4k)
N = 30k/4 = 7.5 ~ 7.
So if i do 8 runs and dont get a sup vigor i lose gold. Then if i do get a sup vigor rune i do the first equation but multiply it by the number of runs that i did do to see what my true profit is.

Nihil...seriously the amount of free time you have wakes me up in the middle of the nights with cold sweats...but nice either way but i can tell you one thing...with the crap drops i get im always losing money on my runs :)

OH! i'm an idiot. i forgot to tell you all how to get Opportunity Cost

Opportunity Cost = Amount you make in your most used farming run over the same amount of time as the chest run.

So your opportunity cost is greater if you solo FoW than if you farm trolls.

What scares me more is that it didnt take me long to get this equation. About 10 min..we were just talking about chest runs in my guild and if they were profitable so i came up with an equation to find out..

Oh btw this isnt the TRUE loss of profit equation. In reality you would have to factor in the occasional gold drop from normal farming runs which would mean you would have to derive either the avg gold drop value or the percent of golds dropped or find out the actual drop equation that ANet has for golds and subtract that from the first part of the equation as well.

Actually i'd be scared if someone comes up with the price over time equation of an item or the full version of this equation.. that would take hours.

I have a question.

When you do chest runs do you just equip running skills and the like and run from chest to chest? Or do you fight from chest to chest?

I know you said "chest run" but that takes on different meaning for different peeps.

It is up to each person, normally when people advertise for a "chest run" the group that assembles is "less-than-qualified" to fight from chest to chest. So I would advise against fighting unless you think your team will join you and can pull it off. P.S. 6 Warriors, a mesmer, and elementalist wont make it! xD

If you want to know that answer then plug in the total amount you made on the trip for the first value rather than just the stuff from the chest. The problem with that is it can only be done over 1 run. If you wanted to do it over many runs you'd have to find the average value of items gained from the drops other than chests per run. It wouldn't be 100% accurate but the other way to do it would take you months just to gather the data.
