Thunderhead Keep

As a Warrior/Monk, I find it very difficult, if not impossible, to join a logical group consiting of the "right" members for the Thunderhead Keep mission (this also applies to places like UW and Dragon's Lair but I won't get into that).

I've been trying to do this mission several times already, and obviously I haven't really succeeded in doing so. The farthest I've gotten up to (using henchies) is the part with that boss Mursaatt (most likely spelt wrong). I ended killing everything but him, and by that time all my hencies were dead and I was left standing to do 1 on 1 with the guy. Of course, it didn't work out well, and I ended up losing and adding another unsuccessful mission.

I'm finding it very stressful trying to complete this mission. I've read every guide here on how to complete the mission, but none of them are truly meant for a W/Mo, and yet although they are sensible and I do try to follow them down to the word, they simply don't work for me.

I originally thought it was impossible to get through this mission as a Warrior, seeing as how nobody wants a Warrior in their team once you get to Iron Mines. But I've seen screenshots of Warriors on that fire island thingy, so I'm basically like "what the hell?".

So can anyone give me some advice on how to accomplish this mission? Any advice at all would be great.

Solo it with some henchmen. Just camp at the King at the end.

RE: Thunderhead Keep

have you tried my guide?

http://guildwars.gameamp.com/guide/viewGui...49.php!orderBy=

doesn't matter what class you are, and you can actualy do it with an empty skillbar just directing the henchies if you want.

(it's just easier with skills)

RE: Thunderhead Keep

well, 'camp the king' style, works with henchies, tho it is sometimes difficult. I would grab both tanks, both healers, the ranger and whatever else... I would likely avoid the ellie hench, simply because anet made firestorm a terrible skill, yet left it on the henchie. Other than that, I am usually on all weekend, if you havent finished it by this upcoming w/e, give me a holler, i should be able to round up a couple ppl, or grab my ellie or use my nec as a mm and some henchies, should be doable.

RE: Thunderhead Keep

That's quite an excellent guide actually. I don't know why I didn't see that earlier. I might take up that offer for your help, UCCat, if I'm really having a lot of trouble with this mission, but I might not. In either case I'll pm you incase I do. And if I don't, then I completed the mission and fireworks for me plz :P

Anyways, thanks for the help guys.

RE: Thunderhead Keep

I personally don't understand what peoples problem is with Wa/Mo's. The two times I completed this mission, one was with my Wa/Mo and the other with my MM, they were integral to our strategy. We used the tank holding torch strategy, which worked extremely well both times I did it. It made it extremely easy the first time, and pretty easy the second time. It was only harder the second time because we had a monk who was opposed to camping the king, and then later he said he wanted to hold to torch, for some reason, and our warrior gave it to him. So he needed some serious healing, don't know what was going on in his head. Anyway, just try forming your own group using this strategy, that's what I did both times. I took two monks, two tanks, two rangers, and two nukers. Rangers used the catas and fell back when people broke through, worked very well both times. I don't really recommend MM for this mission, because there aren't too many corpses once you get to the Keep if the catas are going like they are supposed. Anyway, hope that helps, and good luck finishing it. I am actually still stuck on that mission with my first character, actually, a ranger, but now that I have the strategy perfected, I will do it this weekend. So if you still want some help then, I will probably be doing it on Friday or Saturday.

Glitch

There is a huge glitch with this mission kinda hard to do but works everytime i tryed this makes it hard to even lose. It kinda is when the gates are closed and they cant get into the fort area so all you have to do is range them it is a huge expoit and i am not going to tell the secret to it. Try guessing i will tell you if you get close or are right.

^^^ well I am kinda glad that you aren't posting the exact exploit this way we don't have to worry about Anet removing it so quickly.

as for the main part of this thread, just be a stance tank and hold the torch. pretty much everyone will attack you and you just need to be healed.

RE: Thunderhead Keep

All you need is 2 or 3 trappers for the gates. 2 monks for healing. 1 minion necro. and for the rest warrior tanks.(or ele, mesm) when i done that mission, nobody died a single time. mursaat and jades got owned. :P camping at the king aint a good idea. you will get overwhelmed in no time. the plan is that the rangers constantly trap at the gates. when enemy's come trough then let the warriors and the necro do their job.(the minions will slow down the jades/mursaat). when the jade boss comes kill all other jades first. then kill the boss. and use the catapults. made our mission very easy ^^

RE: Thunderhead Keep

One Bonder/Heal monk, One Stance Tank, One MM, One SS, Two Mesmers. If you want more than 6, bring trappers or nukers.

Torch trick, have tank grab torch, monk bonds, MM and SS do their thing. One Mesmer anti-melee, the other anti-caster.

We were so bored. It was too easy.

RE: Thunderhead Keep

who ever said a MM isnt a good idea for this mission was wrong... you gotta have some balls to be a good MM tho, like running out side the fort to pick up the bodies from the pults... and if you heal them right your minions stay around longer

i carry SS because i dont play MM the same way everyone else does, so i use SS to pwn while the minions help dish out the pain.

all you gota do to MM it is you must make sure you use all allies bodies, and kill the enemies who have usable bodies first (thats a good idea if you are playing with a MM because if there are more minions around, the odds are better)

i did it last night and it was mega easy cus the ele was a noob and kept running to the front and dieing so i always had at least 2-6 minions... and if you kill the guys who stand on the other side of the wall facing the king (they are in bow and caster range) make fiends out of them and they think the ranks of all passing groups

i havent done it with my W/E yet but i dont see why it would be a problem cus if your with a good group, the class doesnt matter, just how you call targets'n'*kitten*

kinda off topic but... mhe

RE: Thunderhead Keep

i keep managing to own myself by using my own guide.

though i clear the city in record time, right afterwords i tend to overagro and die. that is IMO the hardest part of the mission, once you get to the fort it's pretty easy.

(also might mention that i've been using only 6 henchies... i should add the 7th in and i'd be good i think)

i'll do it again tommorow

RE: Thunderhead Keep

just a guess based on what i used to do as an mm but the getting past the doors without opening them would perhaps involve consume corpse
or perhaps a brave tank could lure some of the monsters onto the balista strikes?
ive seen some pretty strange ideas on this mission ive done it allot of times now but if you get a good group that understand there skills and play as a team its allot less stressfull belive me. if im on when you wanna do it i would be glad to help out and i recon theres a few ampers that would do it just for the fun of it i dunno how many times ive done this mission i couldnt do it for a long long time but once you done it once etc. trinkini blinkblnk if im on gimme a shout

RE: Thunderhead Keep

I just wanted to add some insights to the hard part of the mission. Getting the king on that pedestal should be manageable, one usually only dies here when somebody aggros a wandering group too much.

The interesting part starts after you've killed the red reptile rider boss. King Brechnar saunters to the top of the fortress and does nothing no more... except dying, that he does gladly and easily. I don't know how you can become king of the dwarves and not even have infused armor, but there you go.

Lots of baddies converge on his position and if you don't stop them he *will* die in a matter of seconds... but I think you already know that and got that part covered. ;-)

Anyway, let me enlarge on "camping the king". You should have a decent tank with appropriate defensive build, ideally you should have two monks, protter and healer, keeping him up and running and some serious damage dealers, class and inclination do not matter, they should just be able to take things down *fast*. After Brekky is standing tall the tank should pick up the magic torch and just sit tight. The most he/she is supposed to do is collect aggro at the top of the stairs (and facilitate keeping him alive, always appreciated by the monks).

You have a row of ballistas on either side of you, the use of which is actually debatable. Except for that first group of giants which is not moving, groups will usually pass through their area of effect too quickly to kill them and by the time they reach your position, they have fully regenerated. That first giant group, left alone, actually had a nice fight with a group of Mursaat once, so it might even be advantageous to let them live, but this doesn't always happen.

What *is* beneficial though, is a ranged damage dealer who is manning the gates/ballistas. As long as the ghosts live, they will block the gates and if you manage to damage an incoming group with the ballista enough, you can finish them off while they tackle the ghosts.

Alas, nothing is forever, so eventually the baddies *will* break through. Just welcome the unwelcome visitors at the top of the stairs. No at the bottom, not halfway up, only the top will do. Being anywhere else will almost surely end up in a group sneaking past you on the undefended stairs and doing the king, quickly and permanently.

The torchholders mission is just keeping the aggro focused on himself, the monks do what they do and everybody else is killing things. Preferably with concentrated fire, call as needed (yes, this is obvious and no, the collected human history does not support the conviction that obvious things are actually heeded without constant and firm reiteration).

The call order is by and large the usual, monks, casters, melee, bosses. Exception here would be the Mursaat Elementalist: those chain lightnings *hurt*!

The only hairy situation left will be when two bosses show up in relatively close succession. There can be an unfriendly pairing of say, warrior (tough as anything, not actually very hurtful, but hard to take down) and monk. Pray it doesn't (they are random) and kill as needed. After that it is easy, just wait for Confessor Dorian to show up and extend a warm welcome to him, crispy should do.

HTH.

I am the resurrection and the life; he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live; and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.

RE: Thunderhead Keep

We just completed this mission a few nights ago with 5 people, you can see some screen shots at http://www.roharsroughnecks.com/cms/index....PWS_Album_id=18.

We used a W/Mo stance tank, SS w shivers & BR, E/Me with echo nuking, and 2 healers.

-------

Last night we dropped one of the healers and completed it with 4 people. We still tore through groups amazingly fast. You can see video clips of this at http://www.roharsroughnecks.com/cms/index....=view&ANN_id=18. You can see some screen shots of the entire mission at http://www.roharsroughnecks.com/cms/index....PWS_Album_id=20.

We used the same basic build (and the same characters) as the 5 man team except we dropped a healer, and had the Ele switch to an N secondary to carry Spinal Shivers (for backup) and BIP for the healer. We wanted 2 people with Spinal Shivers because we've found that high level bosses strip it from themselves (or it wears off faster than regular monsters). 2 people with Shivers can keep it on a single boss quite easily.

-------

On 4/18/06 we just completed the mission and bonus with 3 people. A stance tank, SS necro, and healer (with BR support for necro) were all that were needed. Have an 8 1/2 minute highlight video here.
