| Sig Size - this is now the law |
|
|
|
We love to see everybody’s creativity on this site; we have some true graphic geniuses. However the most important thing about a topic post is the topic itself right? Nobody wants to scroll past hundreds of lines of off-topic information just to get to one line of on-topic text. There has been a lot of talk about this and I feel the time is right for action.
There are now new rules on signature sizes. I understand that in some quarters this isn’t going to be popular but my understanding from the majority of members is that there is often way too much space wasted in a thread by overblown information and overblown images.
In reaching a decision on size I feel I have been generous enough to allow for both creative genius and textual information while not allowing too much distraction from the important stuff –topic content! We want to know what you have to say and we want to be able to find it :-)
The new size limitations have been worked out for everybody’s benefit and will mean a lot of you will have to start removing things from your signature, I appreciate that you want to share the fact that you ‘scored as a mesmer’ or ‘taste like butter’, or ‘smell like gravy’ (I made that one up). What we don’t need to know is all those little percentages that led to this conclusion. You will need to edit it down.
The maximum area size is now set as 600 pixels wide and 250 pixels tall. This area is the TOTAL area size allowed for sig content, whether that is just an image, a combination of image and text or just text. The example below contains an image at 550 pixels wide by 150 pixels high with 5 lines of text underneath. Plenty of space I think you will agree.
This is a rule and is not discretionary so we would therefore expect your co-operation in reducing the size of your content to fit in to this area. We don’t expect the change to happen overnight but we do expect it to happen pretty darn quick!
Many thanks for your co-operation on this new measure, I know it wont be popular amongst all our members but its purpose is to create a more uncluttered environment where information is easier to access. We want to see what you have to say and not struggle to find it!
Please also think about our members on a modem connection when creating your sig, keep that file size down as much as you can, a 3mb gif is neither friendly or funny for a modem user to download. Remember that members who have modem connections have them because they have no choice.

30px too high. :)
Easily fixed though for you, just canvas the size, cut 30px off the bottom part and you won't miss anything important.

I just had a few questions:
Are there going to be consequences for those that do not fit within the limits?
And does that mean the staff will be taking it upon themselves to edit people's sigs?
Also, mine is set up so that it fits the width of the post automatically through use of a table. Is that acceptable?

Thank you admins. While Im not on Dial up myself, the sigs here drove me nuts. Some people had insane amounts of information in them and Im glad you have finally put some rules in place to combat this. Excellent work!

If you right click on the image and select properties, you can see the image dimensions-in your case the width is perfect at 600px but the height is over at 280px, should be simple enough to reduce the height, if you do it proportionately it wont ruin the effect of your nice sig either :-)

Your sig is 400x300 in total, text included, 50px too high.

As with any rule on this site, rule breaking will be taken seriously, this is a new rule so initially expect to see lots of comments thrown in to your posts.
If you choose to repeatedly offend, expect a stern warning PM, failure to take notice of that could lead to a ban and nobody would want to be banned just to prove 'they scored as a coconut' would they ?
| QUOTE | | And does that mean the staff will be taking it upon themselves to edit people's sigs? |
No - members have to take some degree of responsibility in adhering to site rules (of which there are few and are only made for the betterment of the community). See above if you choose not to adhere.
| QUOTE | | Also, mine is set up so that it fits the width of the post automatically through use of a table. Is that acceptable? |
The use of tables is perfectly acceptable, if you choose to use a percentage width @ 100% the table will automatically fit the width of the widest post, once this law has been in place for a few days that will be 600px.

thanks for finally doing somthing about it, however 250px is still quite a bit, i would suggest somethin more in the range of 150-175 max (but then again, thats just my self as a graphic designer talking)

Hmm I'll have to check if mine is ok now... If not I suppose I could put my character info to the side, if only I knew how to...
EDIT: ok I'm pretty sure mine looks ok and is within the limits, so yay. I always knew it was small and unobtrusive anyway.

This might be a newb question, but I'm drawing a blank atm. Is there an efficient way to determine the size in pixels of a text area?

As a designer myself I would have opted for something much smaller but I think the wider community would like more space to play with :-)

How I do it personally is make screenshotwith PrtSc and then paste that in Photoshop CS2 (similar editors will do), just use the 'Crop' tool available in most editors to take out only the signature part and ditch the rest, then I go to Image -> Image Size... and read it right there.

Well, I was hoping for something a little more efficient, but good idea. Not sure why I didn't think of that. :)

Did you crop the picture or just shrink it? If you cropped it that explains why you can't see them...
well you have a couple options:
1) redo the sig
2) reshrink the original sig
3) use some filters to make things stand out better
