Are unique identities necessary?

Is it just me, or will all the best villain names be gone by the time COV is added. I mean, you see so many "Dark Heroes" with names i would associate with vilains. I'm sure the fan base will be creative, but I am also sure a lot of villain makers will be disappointed during character gen.

I guess the main point of this post is - Why make unique names at all? Why not base everything of your Paragon ID number that would be visible to other players if needed to avoid harassment issues. By that I mean if there were 2 or 3 Hulks and one was griefing you, you would be able to expand your chat box or click on them to get their account ID.

Its just an idea and would eliminate the need for all the strange spellings like: Spighdur Maan.

Let people be who they want to be. Also, the costume system is so robust that people would have unique identity anyway.

There is more than one John Smith in the world and we seem to survive - somehow.

Re: Are unique identities necessary?

I have to imagine that as great as CoH is that people cancel their accounts and their characters get deleted all the time. This being the case, DarkLady Stell might not available now, but by time CoV comes out it might be ;) Although, I imagine that some people are hoarding names. I wonder how many famous villian names are in storage as level 1 characters, holding the name until CoV comes out.

I don't mind having to be creative with names. It is a little irritating if you have to create a new character immediately for a costume contest or something like that, but for normal circumstances, I have no problems.

Also, I wish Cryptic more heavily enforced the rule of not using "real" character names. It irritates me when I see characters like Wolferine and Battman, especially when the costumes are similiar to the "real" characters. It is one thing to like comics so much that you want to play this game, but it is another to blatantly rip off someone else's idea.

They probably need to have unique character names for game structure purposes. It would probably crash the server if another Stellari logged on at the same time I did. Then there are the problems that would exist in inviting people to teams, sending tells, etc.

Re: Are unique identities necessary?

i have to say i would be SOOOOOOO mad if i ever ran into another Liz the Lizzard.. i mean, that is who i am (not that i expect it to be a common name of course).... but stelari does have a point w/ the sending of tells and groups and even adding people to your friends list..... i also kinda like haveing to be creative when making a new character......

also i'm not sure if CoV is going to the limit to names that are being used on CoH, i mean how many heros are going to be chatting it up w/ villians? but then again i'm not sure how CoV is going to be set up so i don't know if they will forbid villians from using names already picked by heros.... i'm sure the devs will work this out (they kinda have to) b/c there aren't going to be too many names left by next march, unless of course you count those people who are quitting the game or deleting characters.

I don't think anyone covets my name. It is unique, and besides that they would have to answer the 50 million tells I get every night if they took it.

Okay okay... I don't mean to be a broken record from everyone else here, but coming up with a unique name that only your character has is half the fun. If you try to name your character something like, I dunno, Reaper, and its taken, don't change add a . or spaces in the name, like Re.aper or R E A P E R. It's kind of a rip-off from someeone elses origional character.

Re: Are unique identities necessary?

I think I would pass out if two Liz the Lizzards walked up to me.

This just struck me as a curiosity. All MMORPS seem to go off name for their unique identifier. Its not really been a problem for me in COH as much as other games. Weird names and famous names actually don't bother me as much in COH either as other games. I think it is because the comic genre allows for such wackiness.

However - it buggs the living $%^& out of me in fantasy games to see "Star Junkie" or "Smurf Killer" or "Aragorn CXVII" Nobody has names like that in any fantasy literature or movies.

Re: Are unique identities necessary?

I have come across characters with the same name on the test server back a month or so ago (when update 2 first hit and everyone was transferring characters to test it out) so it is possible to have players with the same name active simultaneously, if only on the test server.

I think most games seem to have a hi dark element - in fact i'm gonna post a question about that right now

actually duing character creation i tried for The Lizzard, but it was already taken... but if you decide to join the lizzard group, be aware that you will get many comments about how you don't look like a lizzard, and where is your tail, and other of the such.... of course you may actually make a character that looks like a lizzard, but well that isn't Liz

Re: Are unique identities necessary?

I understand people being cookie cutter superman's and such. These are typically the bigger dork fans lol. I have my area's of that but i forbid myself from making those characters :).

About the names with added characetrs. I have a controller name Deciever. with the . BECAUSE the name automatically came to me along with the story idea. It fits the illusion character about right especially since I abuse decieve. Also with names like that the story will set you apart so your not a blatant ripoff your a new hero completely. Most people don't have stories. If i have your name with a . on the end and we have totally seperate stories then what is the difference? My name is Randell and i know 3 other Randell's but i dont't complain about it lol. Randall is as close as Randell. . :) IF your gonna complain bout my name being the same though you damn well better have a story for your same named character. Otherwise all you are is a name and thus there is no conflict. And if you do have a story like i said it seperates us into different people. Do you really think in a world of thousands of heros you wouldn't have 2 with the same name or close to it?

If i repeated or took too long i'm sorry it's late and i ramble yet again.

Main Hero

Gaurdian Server

Deciever.-lvl 29 illusion/kinetics controller
