Zokushi's Basic Guide to Kiting
From Wikipedia, a definition:
"Kiting is a term [first] encountered in the MMORPG EverQuest referring to a popular method of killing mobs (monsters) by staying at a distance and using ranged attacks, and running whenever the enemy comes near. Similar tactics may be used in other computer and video games. The analogy is from flying a kite, and the method works likewise: by being able to run faster than the target, a safe distance is kept between the player and the target while the player keeps bombarding the target with spells (or sometimes arrows or other projectiles). This ideally results in a dead monster without the player taking a hit. The obvious disadvantages of this tactic are the annoyances of constant running around, its slowness, and the possibility of 'adds' (other monsters in the area assisting the primary target). The tactic relies on being able to generate more damage per second than the mob's hit point regeneration without running out of mana, and so is limited in this respect."
Q: So, why should Rangers and Spiritualists kite in RF Online?
A: Face it, they aren't the most hardy classes. With a decent Defense rating they can take enough hits to survive, but this usually is quite costly on Health Potions.
Q: How does kiting solve this?
A: Before you gain slows or even roots/holds, you can still kite enemies relatively effectively. You will still get hit, however while moving you a) have a higher chance to dodge (they 'miss') and b) Are hit by only the first one or two attacks in an attack chain as opposed to them all.
Q: Ok, it's useful, how do I do it?
A: This is where it gets tricky to explain. First off, make sure you have your buffs on. This inclused Aiming abilities and Fast Casting abilities. If you are a Ranger make sure you have your ammo loaded (elemental prefferably). Now the step by step.
1) Target the mob from a fair distance away and use your attack skill/spell to close for initial attack distance.
2) Once the mob is hit and begins to run toward you just wait.
3) Just before it reaches you RUN! Any direction away from him is prefferable.
4) The mob makes his swing and either hits or misses you, notice he is standing still away from you for a moment.
5) Hit Spacebar to attack or use another Skill/Spell to attack.
6) Repeat this process, running just before they hit you, until they die.
Rangers have the nifty benefit of Critical attacks also causing a temporary stun. If the mob is 1-3 dots you can chain stun them this way.
Q: Is there a downside to kiting?
A: Yes. For one, all the moving. You have to click or move constantly and it can get annoying and sometimes cause the fight to last a bit longer than just staying still. Secondly, while running you do not regen HP/Force and you lose Stamina. This means you need a weapon that either cuts the cost of spells/skills called 'Soul' or a weapon with 500% FP regen called 'Spirit'.
So, in summary, kiting can save you HP potions and frequent beatings, but it can be taxing on your nerves and is a little more risky if you run into other Aggressive type monsters. Use at your own discretion : ) I find that Kiting is really only needed on creatures 4 dots and higher.
Game on!

I use this tatic all the time. i didnt know that it had an offical name or anything i just called it gorrila tatics and it works great. I dont see many rangers/spiritualits besides myself using it. This can also cause a monster losing interest in u and going for whatever PC u cross whiling kiting which have caused me 2 get falsely accused for stealing kills which take time explaining how it was my original kill. Only do this when u have open space and look around so u dont run into any hostile monsters.
