only a rookie at game playing, have gotten this far and have hit the brick wall, have tried everything I can think of but just can't get past this vamp. Is there anyone out there that can send some hints or advice my way

Can you give a bit of detail on where you are ? Are you in the room at the end of the mine level where you are in the room with the Vamp and the fire pit ? (ch 2, lvl 4 I think).
If that is the case then you need to shoot the wooden boards in the roof above the fire pit. Damage the vamp a whole lot, then walk to the end of the ledge that hangs out into the fire pit. You should be standing in a beam of light.
If you damage the Vamp enough, when he walks into the light, he dies. And you turn around and jump into the finish marker.

You don't even need to shoot the vamp once. You just need to lure him into the beam of light, without letting him knock you off the platform. Then just jump into the star and that's it!
