Absolutely Disgusting

Today I was getting my Warrior through the Ice Caves of Sorrow mission. Seeing as how I am currently not in a Guild, I was forced to use a Player User Group (PUG). A necromancer was advertising (in caps lock) his desire for a tank. I oblige him, and request to join his group. We get a few more members (he calls for the bland elementalist-warrior-monk triumvirate), and start the mission.

Fast forward now to after freeing our objective from her prison (her name eludes me at the moment). People now begin to draw swastikas on the minimap after the cinematic. Another party member and I politely ask the perpetrator to stop. We are called Jews by half the party.

Now, the other party member assisting me in my attempts to halt this bigotry is actually jewish. Eventually, the torrent of abuse becomes too much, and she (I'm guessing here: her character was female) quits. I am unwilling to do so, because I'm so close to finishing it. The Swastikas are still being drawn on the minimap.

Finally, during the last battle, the culprit reveals himself, by typing (again, in caps locks) several nazi slogans (Heil Hitler, the like). I immediately call him a bigot. Immediately I am verbally assaulted by four of the party members. I was forced to add all their names to my ignore list.

Now, I'm sure everyone has had the same thing happen to them. I just find it mind-boggling that some tool would act in such a manner, even on the internet. What drives these people? I refuse to accept sheer idiocy as a proper answer. How can they be so narrow-minded, So bigoted, So abusive? How? Can anyone in this community answer this question?

omg that is not only bad but i'm pretty sure that's rascist isn't it? if u'd got screenies u could have reported them, i bl%%d! would have. Nothing that bad has eva happened to me, the worst i have eva had is male genitals being drawn on the mini map. just, wrong, on many levels.

Dude, that's disturbing. Sorry you had to tolerate that. In my experience with people like that, it's based on ignorance. They see the reaction they get when perpetuating the ignorance and thrive on the attention it brings them...even if it is negative. Mostly I think they are to be pitied for their ignorance. If most of these kids knew and understood what Hitler stood for, they'd hurl up their fruity pebbles and cry under their beds till mommy made it okay.

Now pity time is over! Screen Shot that "kittens" and report that "kittens". Ignorance doesn't have to be tolerated. Fight IT!

First warning sign - anyone advertising for a group with caps lock !

It does absolutely disgust me too, I find it hard to believe that in this day and age this kind of behaviour exists, it's just neanderthal...

The way I see it is that the perpetrators are probably spotty insecure white boys who are desperately trying to cling on to or live up to some vague notion of 'manhood' that requires them to somehow feel superior or part of what is their socialy acceptable peer group, it really is about insecurity, anyone that is secure in themselves should feel no need to reject any kind of differance in others.

Its also about trying to be the rebel - something we all do or have done but in this case its incredibly misguided, you see it all the time in varying degrees, some are more clever about it than others these where just obviously thick as well as misguided. There is no excuse for this kind of behaviour I hope you managed to get screens of the conversations and can send them to Anet.

there are tons of childish people on guildwars, i don't know how many times people will just start drawing male and female body parts, random scribbling, swastika's, drawing a hand with the middle finger raised or just pinging like mad, chat spamming obscenities. i've learnt to endure and telling them to stop often just provokes them to continue doing it. best thing to do is just to try and ignore their own stupidity.

All lies and jest, still a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest.

yea that happened to me in RA. when they didnt stop after i said to i just quit. then was forced to put them on ignore list cause of their gay whispers.

I think you don't need screenies to report them, anet should be able to check the chatlogs, so report them with the time and names and it should be taken care off.

I've seen a lot of the same thing and it always baffled me till i saw the movie, American History X. Its a very good movie about Neo-Nazism in modern america, where it stems from, for and how it builds. The story takes a twist from this route but you get the general idea. Its an amazing book and movie. I highly recommend it. I know it improved my understanding.

Firstly let me say I agree with what has already been stated by several posts that this kind of behavior (at least to this extent) is just not needed. I personally think it's funny when someone tries to be like that to get some attention. I don't try and stop them I just type "lol, you realize you're an idiot, right?" and keep laughing.

Also, I have also seen American History X and I would recommend it too. Great acting. Edward Norton and Avery Brooks... I actually just saw it for the 2nd time last night on Starz and I'm going to go bye it soon.

Let's turn it around on these people in-game! We should make a list on here of all the people that enjoy making fun of things they don't even know about. Then we can all PM them and turn the tides!!! Raawr! (j/k)

Dude ive been in that position to once i was in a guild called Porn wanking negros group?? stupid name INDEED and racistic (i joined cus of the PWNG. Ok i was Kinda happy whit the guild cus of the many GvG we played the first week. But Then We went to ToPk = Tombs Of Primeavel Kings. Sudently 5/8 in our party (all in the party were guild members) started to Make Nazi-Marks (i cant come up whit thw word they are called) And started Whit The Hail hitler.
But What shocked me was that My "friend" (i know him from my school, not well but we play guild wars togheter) and also started to do these "kitten"-marks and "kitten"-words
And i got some ScreenShots Of that if Intrested. And i reported These Kittens For Racism and For swearing (calling me N-Word And Gay...and so on. And these Guys in the guild was around 12-16 Years Old.

on the matter @ hand, this happens all too frequent when i join a party. @ least i say @ bare min once a day. im not jewish but i dont find anything that was done during that time amusing nor something to joke about.
funny thing though is you NEVER see a "neo nazi" shout white power or crap like that when african americans/jewish or anything of the sort is near. its simply a bunch of cowards.
always has been and wont change.
i dont care how close i am to finishing the mission ill let them know if i see it once i ask politely to stop and if i see it again ill tell them im leaving and why.
REALLY REALLY fun when your the only monk and they need you to finish. but just goes to show the immaturity of people both children and adults for that matter.

i wish anet could detect whats being drawn on minimap and if that symbol is REMOTELY drawn ban for x amount of time.

i might be abel to shed some light on that since that the nazi ideollegy sais that the "perfect" person is of the arian race (white skin, tall, blond hair, blue eys/ peeps from northerns europe) this was also the reason why many of naziparty leaders used the vikings as an image of the "third reich" (had a great interest in WW2 when i was younger)

(i know that killing 6 mill jews is influence but so i trying to convert peeps). this have to be seen from my basic filosofy that people are no more than cemical and psycical processes. thereby a human life has no value more that lets say a stone or a straw of grass. mind you im not a homecital maniac and dont go around killing people, but i dont see whats wrong with killing a person when theres nothing wrong with moing the lawn.

EDIT:Katanama, I agree with you. The Nazis did awful things but so have many before them. Many ppl could be offended if someone drew crosses at the map since Christian crusaders forced most of the ppl in the world to have the same ideology as they did. Christianity hasn't been spread throughout the world with kind words and flowers :)
-IMO Germans themesevels should be offended more than anyone else since they have to face some sort of a racism too even more than jewish and other ppl due to their history. Many ppl do not seem to remember anything else about germans but WW2.

As another poster mentioned the Nazi philosophy was/is based on the purity of the arian race- blond hair, blue eyes etc. Therefore it figures that anyone that embraces that philisophy is going to be of that genetic disposition or at least close to it. So I would say no that wasn't being racist but where it did fall down is the fact that it assumes that the people who are using the swastika have am understanding of what it really represents.

Actually, the swastika is not the entirely the same as the sign hitler used.

You can see how the - go left, Hitlers went right.

The swastika is a religious sign of Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism. (however to be honest I do think the hindu's used it to the right too)

I do not see a swastika as something racist myself as it was long around before hitler was born even.

ok I checked out what that Swatsika is :P
actually, the NAzi sign can be easeliy mistaken for other things.
A) for example: I've heard that somewhere in the world the same sign (execpt the thingies are in the different direction) is a sign of luck instead of Nazism.
b) atleast in the past, Finnish Airforce used to have the same sign exept the thingies pointed in different directions :P
