Honestly man, my brute Ric Flair is SS/Inv and I would say that those are the best powers. SS is awesome and the heal for Inv is perfect. I'm sure someone will see this and respond with dark being a good powerset too, always with the dark.

I haven't tried all of the power sets for Brutes, but I would say that of the ones I've played semi-seriously, Energy Melee is the most effective. I've only used Energy Armor as a secondary, so I can't say for the secondaries.

First off, Unwelcome to the site Antox.
Now, since I tried to stay away from Brutes (didn't think I would like the concept of a reversed Scrapper with high hitpoints). I find that trying the Energy Melee/Invul is a pretty good build so far (lvl 11).
I like the Energy Melee because not a lot of villians resist the Energy attacks, as opposed to the Smashing and Lethal. Also, Energy Melee provides disorient with the attacks (which helps with large mobs). That provides you some time to take mobs down quickly and take less damage.

I guess I just haven't had a good experience with the Dark set (CoH). Haven't tried with a Brute though. Maybe they would be different...I could roll one and see what it turns out...

I think SS/Inv is the best combo; of course that is what my highest Toon is. I do recommend that you avoid TAUNT; I think it is a waste of power. If you want a range power just get HURL. It works just as well for pulling and if you hit does some damage. It is also has some cool animation. LOL.

well suffer the lower levels of a Dark/Dark till roughly, 18-22.. then you have Dark Consumption @ 16 and Dark Regeneration @ 18.. (I think)
Anyways, get 3 or so baddies around you, crack off Dark regen when you're getting low on hp, then Dark Consumption after that when your stamina is down, and it's like a +66% heal and stamina recovery..
I just can't suffer through the lower levels anymore, once was enough..

I've gotten several different opinions on Taunt for Brutes. I know they are not Tanks and cannot take the damage as a Tank, so, question is...is Taunt a viable power for Brutes? I was told to take it to get mobs on you to raise the fury bar, however, if you get too many, then you run the risk of faceplanting where you stand. any other opinions?

Like you just said, Brutes aren't tanks..
I think if you take the presence pool for the Single Person Taunt, then get the other 2 that open up at 14/20 you'll see that a regular taunt is not that great, but a single person taunt will help pull guys over and build fury bar like they said..

Taunt = Sucks.
As for getting mobs on you, run into the middle of them and hit your hand clap, once they get up you will have all the beatings you need…either by you or to you. LOL.
As for building the Fury bar, the best trick I have found (and I read about it on Gameamp) is putting your Brawl on Auto. That raises my Fury like CRAZY!
On Power Pool sets I went with the Jump (I have Jump Kick, a nice moderate power with knockdown features) and Fitness (The heal and Stamina are nice to have for a Brute) I did not want Presence for my Brute; he gets enough attention as it is.

I know the Invul has the Invincibility shield that adds the aggro factor to it.
EM has a AoE attack, Whirling Hands, that I just love. It's like Hand Clap, but better. When it connects, it disorients everyone around and hits for damage (kind of like Foot Stomp, which is a must for the SS build).

I dont know I am a big fan of Taunt.. and I use it in my attack chain.. I dont use it as a Tank would.. Tanks use it for Aggro Management I use it for Fury generation..
I dont use it to get Agro from the whole group of Mobs I pick targets that are off to the side or in the back.
While my attacks are in animation I switch mobs and cue up the taunt and while the taunt animation is going I switch back to the original mob and cue an attack very minimal lose in DPS..
Have a group of pesky ranged mobs in a room with other spawns you dont want to Agro just yet.. Taunt the group Break Line of Sight and as there all trying to attack you your team can let loose into them cause the mobs will only attack you and if they cant see you they will walk/run so they can.. granted you can use Hurl or other Ranged attacks but brutes Ranged attacks have a tendency to Knock-Back which in it self can cause over agro..

That's the downside of stone. You don't get your AoE attack until level 32. I just got mine last level (I'm 33 now). Tremor. It's pretty cool, but for a 9th Tier power, it's kinda anti-climactic. Moderate Damage PBAoE with Knockback/down.

tried several builds and I'm digging the Dark/Dark set. With tough I can take reasonable damage, end red on aoe heal and AOE end drain and i can go pretty well. also combat jump and acrobatics are handy. Took the single target taunt, good for pulling 1-a few from a crowded area when solo or small team. Also good for things like barracuda, i can singly taunt to get aggro without getting mad aggro from the whole group (if the rest of the team is hitting em the taunt dont affect them). Just got oppressive gloom, its nice, better than ever against enemies with toggles, if i can get even a short confuse the toggles drop long enough to dish out some hurt.

I have had 3 brutes, SS/INV is the absolute best I've got. He's lvl 40. My other is a 27 stone/stone.
The 3rd i deleted 'cause he was a turd (fire/fire).
It doesn't get much better than foot stomp with hasten.

Simple. . . use your mouse hold CTRL and left Click brawl. A Green circle will appear around Brawl, at that point on, everytime you are in melee range of a targeted foe, you'll throw a brawl.
Have fun and good luck

I'd say Stone/Stone.
Most of the brutes that I have seen last longest in team wipes are stone.

I would say personally,
SS/energy : i dont see it very often but i have one and he rocks.
Stone/Stone : this is tricky but a little bit more defensive, with stone adding the damadge. I would take hasten.
Fire/Fire : this is fun and cool, with a lot of damage coming out of it

My personal fave is Elec/Stone. I made one of these for the RV event where we all got some nice free levels and I must say it was a kick arse build that only got killed once or twice during the whole event and that was mostly due to the fact that I thought I could take on the Signature Heroes one on one. And I must say I lasted longer than everyone else who attempted it.

I would have to say that my favorite is Dark/Dark. All your attacks lower accuracy of your target, and you get two heals, an endurance recharge power and an AoE power boosting power. The only drawback to /Dark is that you only have one +defense power, that being Cloak of Darkness.
As far as Taunt goes, I use it when in groups to keep the aggro around me so that the others can worry only about keeping me alive instead of everyone else. And with all the enemies around me, just means more of a boost to my attacks, bigger heal and more enudrance i get back when i hit my AoEs :P

Personally, I think you should pick whatever feels right for your character (the background story, his/her costume, etc.). That's what I do and I have the most fun that way.
I think you'll do a lot of damage no matter what set you pick, and from what I've heard, all of the armor sets are decent enough (although I haven't heard anything about fire).
