In Testing: Sorcerer and Bard Spell Switching
24-Apr-2006
This is a feature that is currently in testing and will appear in a future update. This feature will allow Sorcerers and Bards to swap spells from their spellbooks for a new spell of the same level.
How will it work?
All Sorcerer and Bard trainers will have a new option added to their dialogue box: "I would like to exchange one of my spells for a different one." Selecting this option brings up the Spell Exchange panel. Spell exchange works in the same way as the Action Point system - select the spell you would like to get rid of on the left, and select the desired spell on the right. There is a cash price for each spell swap and you can only swap a spell for another spell of the same level. You can swap as many spells as you like, at any time you like, the only limit is how much money you have in your coin purse.
How much will it cost?
The following is an example of the pricing scheme. This is subject to change.
* Level 1 Spells = 1,000 gp per spell
* Level 2 Spells = 4,000 gp per spell
* Level 3 Spells = 9,000 gp per spell
* Level 4 Spells = 16,000 gp per spell
* Level 5 Spells = 25,000 gp per spell

Thanks Nak! I'll get this up as a news post in just a minute.
And isn't here where all the spell casters of Stormreach say, "Wooo Hooo"?

Woo hoo! I might actually start playing my Sorc again when that is implemented. I didn't want to have to spend the time on a reroll because I did something stupid.

Or because they changed how a spell worked.

They intend on charging us to swap spells.. which for a Sorcerer or Bard is an inborn, innate ability???
Oh, how lame.

Yeah, but I can think of other ways of doing it w/o charging for it. Besides - if you allow Sorcs to swap out spells at will ( if they can afford it ), then they become more like Wizards than they should be.
Sorc - Wow, lots of things in the next quest are immune to fire... I'd better go cash-out my Fire Ball for Lightning Bolt.
I'd be happier with a specific ammount of swapable spells per level. Make it level dependant - like at 5th level you can swap out 2 levels of spells ( 2 first level spells or 1 2nd ). At 6th you can swap out 3 spell levels worth. Etc.
This is just a money-sink, imho. Yes, they are offering something that is a needed feature to both Bards & Sorcs - but once again they are taking the lazy way to go about it. Instead of creating a mechanic to deal with it, they are creating a simply way to vendor the spells instead. It's like treating spells like they were coming out of a soda machine - you just need to put in the proper ammount of change to get the spell you want. This removes one of the essensial parts of being a Sorcerer - which is carefull spell selection. If any Sorc can just cash-out any spell... then it becomes little deal to select spells as you level knowing that you can just opt out of it when you have the cash.
Again, I'm glad they are looking into this - I just feel they are taking a lazy, easy, and poor way of going about it. IMHO - this will ruin much of what makes Sorcerers unique.

I do agree that this is a quick fix. And hopefully they are working on a way that will be better for the future, but for now, for all of those people who want to get rid of their spells that have been changed, it was a quick way to make them happy.
I know they will be running into problems w/ it soon though, there are to many other classes out there that are going to start getting upset that they don't have the power to change anything either. Another change will be needed.
