How will you RP?

How will you RP? With groups? On your own? With different people each time?

What kind of RPing style do you like? What are your characters usually like? Do you have a background prepared already? NO?! Well make one now! Do you not RP, and why not?

RE: How will you RP?

If I am on my own, I am just there to lvl and xp. So I rather don't solo at all. I prefer to RP with a known group of people. There are so many ways to RP something, and it is often hard to have a feel of how strangers do their thing. If I do join strangers I will be the quiet one.

In general my RP characters are somewhat close to my real character. I am playing City of Villains, but I am clearly not an impressive villain. I have this annoy tendency to give cheer after a tough fight and compliment others.

But I am running in one RP team that meets every Sunday and then we can let go completely. Which is something I hope to find in any new MMO I will play. But it will take a bit of time before you know the players.

As for a background. I agree it is essential. But I don't have one yet. Since I don't know yet what kind of character to play. Or how the world will look like. And it might even depend on the RP group. Too many unknowns to start now. It will come after I create my first dispensable toon.

RE: How will you RP?

Heh, maybe I should have answered my own questions.

I usually RP constantly, even if no ones near me. This stems from muds, with the imms following you around invisibly. So I'll say things even though no one can hear me. In the Dreaded Real Life I go to LARPs and roleplay with the same people whenever I get a chance. In games, though, I roleplay with different people.

More later, I have to go.

RE: How will you RP?

I find it easier to just be myself. I guess I'm just enough of a character in real life that I give character to my characters. Sometimes I'm quiet, sometimes I yak on about nothing at all.

When I play by myself, I'm like Phedre, I'm just there to level up and such. As for actual roleplaying, it kinda comes and goes. Somedays I become obsorbed in my character, and some days I'm just there to play.

RE: How will you RP?

My Post, continued:

See, I can't do that. Playing an MMO without the RPG makes me bored and depressed. That's why I liked the clan ideas in (I know, I know, it's evil) Runescape. If it weren't for people who couldn't grasp the concept of roleplay, the clans there would have been amazing. As they are, they have great ideas. I don't really want to go into depth, but I like the way they do things over there.

I like roleplaying a quiet character without much of a grasp on reality. And no conjunctions. I love saying things like "I am afraid that I can not agree with you, madam Biage. My morals prevent me from commiting such a heinous act." Of course, by morals, I mean what my character wants.

No, I don't have a background prepared. I don't like making backgrounds. It makes me feel confined, so I leave things like that out. I make them up when others ask, and do a fairly good job remembering them. If I don't, I just tell them I don't know what they're talking about and they're obviously wrong. Sheesh. Bunch of crazy people here.

Also, to compare my post to Phedre's,

I like soloing. But, it can get boring, I agree. So I just do amusing things with the game until I see someone, and then I go and try to strike up a conversation. I'm less of a player than an actual ... I hate to say it, but I love the lore of games. It's why WoW attracted me.

I'm much different online, and to different people. I also have days where I'm quiet, and days where I talk too much. The days I talk too much are also known as days where I'm rude and obnoxious, but boy is it fun. Anyway, I usually leave fights immediately after and don't bother to stick around. I usually fight for quests, and that's really it.

I hope they show screenshots of all the different endgame class/race looks, and all the newbie area class/race looks. It'll help a lot with starting to work on my character.

RE: How will you RP?

Hi, my name is thejeni and I'm a recovering RPer.

I've been clean for just over 4 years now. All my roleplaying is confined in MMOs, now. I used to be a hard core gamer. But I decied it was somethign that I didn't want to do any more.

As for MMOs. I like to create a background for my character and RP. But I don't do it from the very beginning. I have to learn the game (which always takes me a bit), and learn about the lore and the history (I also LOVE that part of games) before I can decide who my character is. I also feel that I need to know a lot about their powers to be able to create a good character.

I do have to say that when I'm solo, I still RP once I get going. Yes, I talk to NPCs and monters. I will dance a victory dance even if I'm alone. I prefer RPing in a group, but sometimes it is very difficult to find a good steady group for it. When that happens I just make sure that everything I say is in character, no matter who I'm talking to.

As for the type of person I play, well that just depends on the character. They are all different. And depending on what I decide their backgrounds are is how they react to different things.

And lastly the most fun RPing a character in an MMO that I had was in Lineage2. Not the most RP friendly game, but everyone loved Burtha. She was a big, not so bright orc fighter. And when ever I was logged in w/ her I RPed her, no matter who I was talking to. I never dropped character either. Of course the most common thing she said was, "Burtha Smash!" or "Burtha smash?" or "Burtha no like!". Trading with other players for items was always fun. And giving directions.... yeah she was a blast to play.

I tend not to rp in game at all. I suppose that has a lot to do with the fact that I played so many games like KQ, TES, for so long, where you role didn't change because you were always interacting with NPCs that treated you according to the story of the game.

I'm not saying that I don't dabble every now and then when I find people in character, just that I don't, by nature do so.

That doesn't mean that my characters don't have a story. The one thing that I can't stand is people who get on and don't think for a minute what there character is like, how they might act if every put in an rp situation. I simply can't game without giving my characters a backstory.

Strangely enough, thejeni, I found L2 easier to rp in than most other MMOs I've played, though I think it has a LOT to do with the server and the people you play with.

I tend to talk to NPC's. Well if they say something to me that warrents a response. And what's really sad is I will do it when I'm playing solo, but I'm a bit odd anyway *grin*

As for L2, I never really found any one RP'ing. It could be I was on the wrong server. One of my character's I always RP'ed when I played her. Some of the general L2 population thought it was really great, others didn't have any idea what I was doing and just thought that English wasn't my first language. But when Burtha needed to smash, Burtha smashed!

RE: How will you RP?

Lol! I think I would have loved to have met Burtha!
My little elven oracle seemed to always attract the "what are you doing, fair maiden" types, leading me to really, really wanting to smash their faces in, especially when I received the line for the 5th time in an hour.

RE: How will you RP?

I never ran into any RPer's in L2. That's probably mostly because I kept to myself. If I saw another player out in the wilds, I'd give him/her a wide berth just in case. When I would come in to town, I was pretty much just there to do my business and get out. I tend to play the lone adventurer type. Not that I don't enjoy other's company, but I don't go searching it out.

So yeah, I roleplay by trying to be myself in game. I like to think of my characters as the adventurer for hire type. Only you can't get any cheaper than free. :)

Burtha was one of my favorite characters in any game to play. I loved entering a new area and announcing in broadcast "Burtha Smash!". She was a lot of fun to play. And I do have to admit, I really enjoyed running into people who didn't rp. It was great hearing their reactions to Burtha (or even worse when they asked her a question about something!).

In L2 I think it is a good idea to keep a "wide berth". You never know who you are going to run into out in the wide open wild. But I usually don't solo, I usually play with my boyfriend. He isn't an rp'er, but he enjoyed watching the reactions when I did.

RE: How will you RP?

I tend to RP as i lvl through the game world not so much in chat but through the readings of the quests that you take part in with and with out others. I don't set my toon to walk in towns but i will stop running and comment on the surroundings even if there is noone listening. At times i find the RP chat gets in the way of realy playing the world when your in battle, mostly pvp. Not everyone is fluent (SP??) in the language of whatever the game history/story line sets

but i'm glad i was pointed to this game late because i realy want to play now and i have only a few weeks of sitting on the edge of my chair till release :)
