| Halfling 8/2 Fighter/Paladin Dex Build |
|
|
|
I prefer my character's been able to fill alteast 2 solid roles within a team.
Role 1: Ranged Damage via Heavy Repeater
Role 2: Melee-Tank (Specializing in Debuffing Piercing Weapons)
Here's what stats, feats and enhancements etc. I intend on having at level 10.
Lawful Good
Stats
17 Str (11 +3,+3)
28 Dex (22 base, +2 halfling dex enhancement, +3 item, +1 tome)
13 Con (10+3)
14 Int
8 wis
8 cha
Feats:
Weapon Focus: Ranged and Piercing
Weapon Specialization: Ranged
Exotic Weapon: Heavy Repeating Crossbow
Combat Expertise
Dodge
Improved Critical: Ranged, Piercing
Weapon Finesse
Enhancements:
Fighters Action Boost 8
Fighters Dodge (+1 ac)
Fighters Expertise (Increases Combat Expertise from +5 to +9)
Fighters Str 3 (+3 str)
Special Abilities:
+2 AC Paladin Aura
Immunity to Fear
Able to use Cure Wands and a few others
Overall Stats: (w/o buffs or action boost)
In Range Mode:
+21-24 Attack bonus depending on which bow.
I've got a nice collection of heavy repeaters already for a variety of situations.
+4 Heavy Repeater
+1 Shocking Heavy Repeater of Pure Good
+1 Keen Heavy Repeater of Enfeebling
Hopefully I can find a keen of Puncturing, or just plain ol wounding and weakening. Maybe a Wounding of Puncturing?!
In Melee-Mode
48 AC using Combat Expertise, but no external buffs.
+11-15 Attack /w Combat Expertise on.
-5 DR slashing/bludgeon/piercing
Breakdown:
Base: 10
Halfling bonus +1
Amulet of Natural Armor +1
Dodge + Enhancement +2
Ce + Enhancement +9
Black Widow Bracers +4 (armor Bonus)
Specular Optics +3 (Deflection Bonus)
Paladin Aura +2
+5 Heavy Shield +7
28 Dex, +9
Robes
Robe of Invulnerability (-5 Damage Reduction to Slashing, Piercing, Bludgeon)
Robe of Spell Resistance 17
Robe of Greater Fire Resistance (-20)
Still looking for similiar versions for cold/elec/acid etc.
This isn't the end-all tank build but I think it's pretty nice.
Pro's:
Excellent Ranged Damaged - the high attack bonus will help vs the top end bad guys.
Ability to tank like a fighter - but still make use of healing/lesser restore wands.
Decent Saves due to race, stats and multiclassing.
Being Different. I like playing outside of the box.
Piercing Weapons are less used - so finding decent ones at the Brokers is easier.
Con's:
Less damage then a traditional fighter-str-armor tank build.
Missing out on Fighter Action boost 10 (capped at 8)
Piercing Weapons do less DPS then traditional slashing/bludgeon.
Relatively low HP
Low Attack bonus when in Melee mode - will mostly rely on crits using debuff weapons (Keen Dagger of Puncturing for example)
Skills:
Focusing out Intimidate, Tumble and Jump.
So thats my plan, He's 4/1 and 1/2 currently.
Whatcha guys think?

Outside the box for sure. I like the overall concept, and I'd invite you as a ranged support. You would do well to advertise that you are a ranged combatant for the most part.
A few things from memory. Paladins are not immune to fear until level 3.
You are losing 1 to all saves because the negative charisma and another -1 in will.
Also, 3/4 carry capacity/load has come up.
Your will save with halfing bonus, and a +2 or so resistance item is going to be around 5. You will be held, slept, and generally miserable when having to make that save.
IMO you will hate undead. Picking up 2 paladin to me is more of a detriment just to pick up +2 ac and the ability to use a few wands. The paladin spell list is very small. Instead of fighters dodge, I might pick up bulwark of good to increase the AC +1 to myself and everyone, better that way.
I'd lean more ranger than paladin myself. You would pick up 2wf, rapid shot, and bow strength all for free with a 2 level dip into ranger. Making you more melee friendly, and still boasting a good ac.
I would have dumped more str into cha, since Intimidate is based of charisma. Strength is not that necessary with your build.
Your saves are decent fort, good reflex, horrid will. No evasion at all :( With that huge dex and decent int, rogue maybe better than paladin. Once you get into 40ac, you are getting overkill. You only get hit on crits and boss mobs. You will rely a lot on equipment. The abberant robe DR is only against non magic weapons you'll find that is not as useful as it sounds. Might want to look into block robes(axeblock, spearblock etc), or a heavy fortification robes.
I make a good bit of groups, organize etc. I am a reall stickler for people being upfront about what they like to do. So, if you didn't advertize you role, I would notice the lack of armor, and question you on it. Then likely replace you with a damage dealing tank later, let you slide into ranged combat.
My ideal group is a rogue type, bard, cleric, ranged support, tank, arcane. Rogue type is vague because a mutt can do the job and be good at it and other things.
Tried to give you a well rounded feedback.
I'd lean to 8 fighter/2 ranger myself. What would you do with 2 more levels?

I was pretty sure pally's got fear immunity at level 2. I'll double check on that before I take that step.
Assuming it's level 3, I'll go with 9/1 and pick up an extra feat. Luck of Heroes maybe.
I'll also be compensating for the low wis/cha with items. Seems like I find +3-4 charisma items fairly regularly on high end quests.
Got a ring of +2 resistance sitting around too.
I picked fighter's dodge over bulwark because my guild has several active paladins and atleast one of them is usually around.
IMO, being able to use cure wands is a major bonus - when you end up alone, or the cleric is out of sp or dead or so on.
I should have him up to max level next week sometime, I'll let you know how he turned out.

Rangers via spells(spell list) and rogues via Use magic device get the same use as well. I just thought rapid reload belonged in your build and with the higher strength bow strength would be good, as well has the option of two weapon fighting.
I have a nearly 10 dwarf paladin, and after running waterworks about a dozen times solo, I am 99.9% positive it is lvl 3 for fear immunity. Lay on hands is lvl 2, but fear immunity is 3. The lay on hands is feeble at best for you but not bad for a freebie. I still would take the aura for boosting the pally ac bonus. It is on you all the time, dodge bonuses are lost when held/sleeping. It also helps when they are out of range of the main paladin. It is a better bonus than just +1 ac to yourself. Makes it feel like a cork build with bonuses to everyone, not just maximizing yourself.
Let me know how it goes.
