I don't know how far I have to go in game, but it seems like if you get to lvl 15 you should be able to get OFF THE STARTING ISLE.
Prophecies let you wander to your hearts content, but for some reason factions makes you have to complete steps A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z -- just to get to a new area!
What gives here? How am I supposed to advance. PLZ HELP!!

In order to get off the island, you have to get to Seitung Harbor. From there, you'll get the quest that sends you to the mainland. But my advice is to try to level up as much as possible before heading out into the big wide world of Cantha: the henchmen all start at lvl 20, as do the majority of the monsters you'll be fighting in the cities. If you go while you're still so vulnerable, you may find yourself spending more time surviving than actually enjoying playing the game.

trust me you don't want to leave untill you're level 15, my char was lvl 12 when she left the starter isle and promptly got her a** handed to her on mutiple occasions, i only just made it to visnauh square with my guildie casue our char's, lvl 15 and 13 were just not strong enough to handle the lvl 20 afflicted, so stay as long as you can, the big wide world is ready and wating to eat you alive.

You have to complete the Minister Cho's Estate mission to gain access to Sietung Harbor (located East of the Monestary). Then you must venture further East to find and complete the Zen Daijin mission. That will give you the quest from First Mate Xiang in Seitung Harbor to go to Mainland Cantha.

oh no, you mean you have to play rather than run the map ?
it gets worse, on the mainland you have to beat certain quests to gain entry into towns
sorry for the sarcasm, but ive seen so many complaints regarding this "OMG why cant i get a run?" that i had to vent, even though this may notbe the case for all

Thanks for the response guys! I managed to work my way over to the mainland and was quickly able to get my Assasin over to PROPHECIES.
Unfortunately once I got there I found there was no draw for me to do stuff over there any more... besides impressing those that don't have the class/skill set.
The good news is I can now appreciate Factions more. I don't like the linearness of it all. The difficulty is sweet though. I wanted a challenge and Factions came through. My opinion on the massive chunks of XP? You need to buy all your skills, so if we don't level often where will we get our skill points from?
