I remember someone mentioning the New epics may be part of a new box, i was thinking new collector's edition but apparently there is a new box set expansion coming out next year. Sounds like additional zones you have to buy box for but does not SEEM to be tied to the epics. So it sounds like the first non "free" expansion coming down the line. Any thoughts.
...Beyond that, we are looking to release another Issue building up the story towards our next retail box, due in 2007. This will include going back and revamping some of the zones from City of Heroes, using everything we’ve learned from making City of Villains and Issue 7, plus a bunch of other cool stuff including new powersets and an epic archetype. Of course for the retail box we will be creating all-new zones and content based on the results of the forum poll we posted last month. The retail box will be an expansion to both City of Heroes and City of Villains.

Yep, that would be the case. As the article I believe you are quoting stated; this has been the plan for the "City of..." series from inception. Numerous free updates with a new boxed 'major' expansion every year or so. In order, to make a stable game (and business model), such boxed sets would have to be tied to new zones so that players with the previous version could continue to play the game whether they bought the box or not. Sort of like Everquest. Should be interesting to see the new content. A little bird tells me to expect to work your Heroism/Villainy on the Moon.

They are so greedy. But I would like them to make a raid for heroes and villains to do together, one with a good 64 or more players. 8 squads. How about a battle against the rikti on their world?

I have no problem with a new box every other year. Thats sounds about right for development and testing and other such programming related things. As long as the free issue updates are not nerfed out of existence because of this. Two issue updates a year and a new box every other year does not sound like a bad business plan.

I just hope they aren't as pointless as the BF2 update boxes. You pay £5, but they aren't generous at all.
I think at the moment there is no lack of content to justify such major expansions, especially if you have to pay for them. I may have got my main to lvl 41, on the road to 50, but after that there are still kheldians and my numberous alts. Not to mention getting my villain to 50 as well.
Though I probably would buy any expansions, there isn't any need to with the hoardes of stuff we already have.

It makes business sense. The game will still be playable without buying the new expansion when it comes about. So it's perfectly viable as I see it.
Cryptic and NCSoft are businesses. Businesses are there to make money for stockholders. They make money by creating viable products which the public purchases.
Although we're all used to getting free upgrades, it's understandable that periodically an upgrade that requires purchase will come about. City of Villains was like this. It was stand-alone, but also an expansion to City of Heroes, allowing the use of bases, the new CoV archetypes and so forth.
My guess is that the expansion will probably run around $50 American when it comes out, like the other games. Possibly less if it's just an expansion. We'll see.

I wouldn't get to worked up about this yet. Yes its coming out but, it's coming out next year. And between now and then we still have another issue ahead of us that supposedly will be focused mainly on end-game content for villains. Since we don't know whats coming then we can't even begin to guess what will be coming after it.
Although we could speculate, based upon the forum polls if anyone here was really paying attention anyways.
All I know is I eventually want to see 50-60 content. Even if it is a few years down the road.

All I know is, after numerous free updates, at least half of the CoX community would probably be willing to shell out the cash. I know I would.

definitely, just seemed like a departure from the norm, they have added zones in a lot of the issues. Guessing costs and such require them to do that, like someone else said I hope its every couple years and is not going to replace the "normal" updates.

Not to worry, Doc. I got it on good (heck, GREAT) authority that it is not going to preclude the free updates/Issues. I think I may have said before, but this is the plan they had from the very beginning with the game. Lots of free Issues plus a Box every year or so. Good business model, and still kicks a$$ over the vast majority of other MMO's models. But you already know that. I believe that the box prices will be the standard market rates. I forget what Posi said about prices to be honest. Worst comes to worst; wait a couple months after launch of the new box (I dare ya), and grab a copy off eBay for a cut-rate price.

Along this line of thinking, when do you think they will include base access into an expansion so COHers who never bought COV can use it too?
I mean I run a great SG on the Freedom server and we stay at about 70-75 on the roster at all times, but there are quite a few people who could care less about prestige because they can't use the base, salvage or anything of that stuff.
Just seems to me that somewhere down the line, the devs will have to just respect the fact that some people just don't wanna be evil.

well, that is what expansion packs are for. It gives you access to things that are not currently being offered. The bases were a feature of CoV and not CoH, however, if you bought CoV, then you can access the bases.
I would not like to see this change as it would hamper people from trying (buying) the new material if they would just get it anyway somewhere down the line. Kind of defeats the profitability of the expansion packs.

since some of the costume peices upcoming are only availble to villains OR to heroes with both names as well as the bases not to mention 4 more slots for heroes, as bishop said you can treat COV as an expansion, i know the price has dropped like a rock on the collectors version i'm sure the regular could be found cheap enough to use it as an expansion.

I would think that adding Base access for Heroes would be a natural for a new box. They wouldn't have to allow usage of CoV to the mix, but it would garner them a lot of good will for the apparent SNAFU of keeping Heroes who didnt want to be a Villain from accessing the SG Bases. Personally, I would not feel miffed by this being added to all of the "just" CoH accounts. Is my logic sound? I would say they could add CoV to the new box too for good measure, but I think they would balk at calling it the "CoX Expansion Pack". Minds out of the gutters, Villains.

I would not want them to add COV to the box set, because then I'm sure they would include that in the cost and I really don't want to pay extra for something I already paid for. With the extra slots, extra costume peices and the bases I think if you want those add ons it would be worth buying COV even if you didnt plan to play a villain and if you ever changed your mind you could.

Well, Doc, I was just thinking that the new Box expansion would be a total expansion uniting the games. I think I heard something akin to my suggestion somewhere else, but I cannot pinpoint where so I'll just let it stand as my little dream. Also, I'm not sure they would keep both the CoH and CoV boxes out on the shelves with the composite expansion box. It would sort of make them redundant. When it comes to retail space nowadays "there can be only one". I could be wrong though.

If they do it would be amazing. It would probably be pretty laggy too. Who knows what a thing like that would do to the already established system. Of course they could always put in the option of making the change local. Or, the option to turn that feature off and leave everything default. This is all possible but the trick would be puling off the whole thing. It would still be amazing though.

I've heard talk but its only talk till its confirmed. Right now I don't see them doing it but I still have hope for the future. Which is ironic considering I'm usually about crushing hope. Hmm. /em shrug Eh, who cares. It's time to sleep. Finals start ommorrow and I don't think I'm up for a groggy morning of brain excursion.

Last I read flag boy didn't like the idea because the art department worked to blah blah blah. I cant imagine it would add much more lag than diffent costume colors/patterns do.
