Why should I buy CoH? A few questions.

Hi all, some of you may know me from other parts of the site (most probably the Guild Wars section).

Anyway, I play Guild Wars and World Of Warcraft, and I’ve been considering playing CoH for a while now, but to be honest I have completely no clue about what it entails, except that you can be a superhero =D.

I was wondering if you guys could sum the game up for me? Just by outlining the game’s main features, classes etc.

In addition to that, I also have a few specific questions:

-Does the game use the instancing model like Guild Wars? Or is it free-roaming like most other MMO’s?

-Does the game have dungeon type areas or similar? And are these compulsory to play through?

-What is the level cap? And how long does it take the average player to reach it? (Playing 2-3 hours a day, maybe more at weekends).

-How reliant is the game on armour and weapons?

-What is PvP like?

-Does the game have guilds?

-Does the game have any trade skill professions? (e.g. armoursmithing, cooking, or whatever superheroes do lol).

-How much does the game cost?

-Are there any expansions?

-Does the game get new content added regularly through patches?

Umm, I think that’s all I would like to know for now =D

Thanks for any help

-Swordy

RE: Why should I buy CoH? A few questions.

Well I can answer some of your questions for you...

Basic classes -
Blaster - I'd compare them to a mage... long range, low defense, high damage. They're(in my opinion) one of the tougher "classes" to play.

Tanker - Warrior all the way... medium damage(depending on slotting), high defense, close range fighters... it's youre job to take all the heat for the rest of the team... to "protect the squishies"

Defender - your "healer" there's lots of sets that don't have a heal at all but that's the easiest way to explain them, they have long distance and close range capabilities... they're Hero support. :)

Scrapper - another warrior type, not so high on the defense as a tanker, but close, higher deamage. They, along with your blasters, are donne be your damage dealers.

Controller - Medium damage, medium defense... it's more of a hero support type roll in that a controller's job is to "lock down the mob" they have all kinds of powers that keep the mob from moving, attacking, doing more damage, things like that. They will do some decent damage, but I've had people tell me that they think they're hard to play (I had no problems but maybe it's just me)

-Does the game have dungeon type areas or similar? And are these compulsory to play through?

Dungeon type areas... yepers, there are indoor and outdoor missions, you go to an office or such and fight you way though... these are your bread and butter, it's where you get your story line. Then there's Task Forces.... usually chained missions varying in length some take an hour or 2 to finish one of the higher level ones you might as well plan on wasting a day or two. They're great fun, but aren't required to "finish the game" per se.

-What is the level cap? And how long does it take the average player to reach it? (Playing 2-3 hours a day, maybe more at weekends).

Level cap... 50... hoe long it takes to get there... it depends on what you're playing and how you're playing. If you play in big teams... I don't know given the hours you said... maybe a couple months... playing solo.... much longer. That said, I played my first 50 (controller) pretty much constantly in small teams (1 or 2 other players) and it took me probably 5 months or so... it's hard work... and you can't expect to get there in a weekend... but it's worth it.

-How reliant is the game on armour and weapons?
Well you get new powers ever even level prety much though the whole game (except the higher levels cause then you get it like every 3rd level, but that's after 40). Slots (to enhance your powers) ever levle you don't get a power. Pretty much every mob will drop enhancments for your slots, plus you can buy them at several shops in each zone... so yeah, pretty reliable. :)

-What is PvP like?
I'm not a big PvP'er so someone else will have to field this one... the only PvP I play is against friends... and I love it against them.

-Does the game have guilds?
Yep, we call them supergroups, it can be hard to find a good SG when you first start out, you might visit the main sites forums and check out the SG lists on the forums... I left my main server because I found a great team on Triumph (Global Heroics) I team with them or their coalition pretty much ever night I play.

-Does the game have any trade skill professions? (e.g. armoursmithing, cooking, or whatever superheroes do lol).
They had talked about it at one point, but never added it. I think it's still in the works, but not yet.

-How much does the game cost?
I saw it the other day at EB for like $20 and then $15 or so a month depending on how you decide to pay... but you get your first month free.

-Are there any expansions?
Yep, free ones... they're getting ready to drop another one "soon" that expands the levels for CoV and some other things. People complain about them, but they usually give you a free "respec" when they change anything so you can (as some people say) "Fix what they broke)

-Does the game get new content added regularly through patches?
Pretty regularly... bout every 3 months or so... depending on the size of what they're adding, things like that. People always complain about them, but hardly ever me... cause I could be paying for them to "screw up my game" :)

I hope that helps some. :) Look me up if you get in the game. I'm usually on the Triumph server Ms Russia

And if Global Heroics sounds interesting check us out here

RE: Why should I buy CoH? A few questions.

Hi One! Welcome to COH. Let me see if I can answer these questions:

QUOTE
I was wondering if you guys could sum the game up for me? Just by outlining the game’s main features, classes etc.

All the details on the classes or Archtypes (AT's) can be found here. But outlining the game's main features is a bit too complex for me :)

QUOTE
In addition to that, I also have a few specific questions:

-Does the game use the instancing model like Guild Wars? Or is it free-roaming like most other MMO’s?

Free roaming for a big part in mutiple city zones. But when you do mission you will get your own instance.

QUOTE
-Does the game have dungeon type areas or similar? And are these compulsory to play through?

No. No dungeons. And there nothing you HAVE TO play through.

QUOTE
-What is the level cap? And how long does it take the average player to reach it? (Playing 2-3 hours a day, maybe more at weekends).

The level cap is 50, and we recently had a whole discussion about how long it takes. I believe the consenses was about 300 hours. So do your own calculations :)

(see Leveling speed question)

QUOTE
-How reliant is the game on armour and weapons?

The game has no armor or weapons. You are a superhero! All that you need will come to you automatically as you level.

QUOTE
-What is PvP like?

I am no great PvP fan, so I can't really answer. It is not mandatory, but I think it is done quite well. At least, there are always people around.

QUOTE
-Does the game have guilds?

Oh yes! They are called Supergroups. And thanks to an excellent chat system, it is definately worth joining one.

QUOTE
-Does the game have any trade skill professions? (e.g. armoursmithing, cooking, or whatever superheroes do lol).

None of that. We are superheroes!

QUOTE
-How much does the game cost?

Not sure how much the box is nowadays. $20 maybe? The subscription is $15, or less if you pay several months ahead.

QUOTE
-Are there any expansions?

They are called issues, and they come free every so often. Issue 7 is coming up soon.

QUOTE
-Does the game get new content added regularly through patches?

I guess I answered that one already :)

I hate to plug, but I really think that my best answer to this has already been written HERE

There you will find why I play, how to play, what types of characters there are, and what kinds of missions there are. All with pictures and fairly easy to read. Give it a shot :)

QUOTE

Does the game use the instancing model like Guild Wars? Or is it free-roaming like most other MMO’s?

Uhh... Huh?

QUOTE

Does the game have dungeon type areas or similar? And are these compulsory to play through?

We have missions that take place in caves, buildings, forts, etc. I can't imagine how boring the game would be without them, but you COULD just fight random stuff forever. You'd also quit the game in about a week doing that.

QUOTE
What is the level cap? And how long does it take the average player to reach it? (Playing 2-3 hours a day, maybe more at weekends).

The trick is to put a lot of thought and effort into ONE character rather than building character after character. If I had focused my energy into a single toon (character), I would have hit 50 in less than 3 months.

QUOTE

How reliant is the game on armour and weapons?

0% No armor or weapons. Just your powers. So nothing to repair, nothing to buy or upgrade. Just Enhancements which are power modifiers that increase various things like damage, range, etc. It's up to you how to enhance your powers though some things make more sense than others. There are lots of guides for different character builds like this one :)

QUOTE
What is PvP like?

It's a zone that both villains and heroes can enter and while you're in the zone, you can fight each other. It's really not very different than any other part of the game except that villains have powers that no enemy in CoH has (and vice-versa).

Some zones have extra tasks (not related to PvP) that you can do. Some are cool, some suck (warburg, yuck!)

QUOTE
Does the game have guilds?

Supergroups. I don't know much about them, but ever since I found out SGs can have private city teleporters for fast travel, I'm definitely looking.

QUOTE
Does the game have any trade skill professions? (e.g. armoursmithing, cooking, or whatever superheroes do lol).

Nah. Probably a good thing too. Simpler not to have to deal with that stuff.

QUOTE
How much does the game cost?

$30 to $60 I think, but you're better off buying a combo of CoH and CoV so you can play both sides. The monthly fee is only $15 and as long as you actually purchased both games, you get access to both for the same price. Oh, and every game purchase comes with one month free.

QUOTE
Are there any expansions?

They're mini-expansions and they come out 1 to 2 a year. They often involve new zones and changes (some positive some negative) to powers. Most have improved the game over-all though and each (so far) has been free.

QUOTE
Does the game get new content added regularly through patches?

See previous.

QUOTE
Umm, I think that’s all I would like to know for now =D

Oh Yeah! Well I have a thing or two to tell you! :)

Do we love the game? Yes. Do we think it could be improved? Yes. However, for MMOs, I know that many games can be very addictive and put you in danger of living on the street begging for money to pay for your next monty of play.

One of my favorite things about CoH/CoV is that you can put it down (and I do) and just play it one month every few months and still be ok. Of course, I lurk around on this site a lot to help "ease the pain", but that's another story (my next month of play is coming in July! WOOT!)

*insert spit take here* ACK! Hero support? I have to comment on this.

Defenders are by far the most versitile characters you can play. They have the most options for powers and power combinations (other than controllers) and have the primary tasks of healing, buffing, and/or debuffing.

One defender on the team can make the whole team capable of taking on enemies that they couldn't have otherwise. While some powers that defenders have are shared with controllers, defender secondaries provide additional debuffing and decent damage (much better than low level controllers anyway).

Well, the 'classes' are actually broken down into 7 archtypes:

Scrapper: Your basic up-close fighter. Built to deal lots of damage in melee, either with weapons or without, depending on how you pick your powers (more on that later).

Blaster: This is a straight-up ranged damage dealer. Built to pour on damage to enemies at a distance.

Tanker: A relative to the scrapper, but with different purposes. Still an up-close fighter, deals less damage than the scrapper, but better built to take it back. Tanks are living walls meant to soak up damage for their squishier team-mates.

Defender: While a capable ranged combatant, the defender's greatest strength is their support capabilities. Defenders can heal and buff up their team mates and/or weaken their enemies in various ways, making them easier to defeat.

Controller: The most complex archtype, the controller does just that, control. They are built to manage both individual enemies and groups by controlling elements, forces and even their opponents' minds. They also have the capability of supporting with buffs and debuffs like defenders, but aren't as good at this function.

Peacebringers and Warshades: These are epic archtypes that can only be created once you get a more basic hero up to 50. They are aliens bound to human hosts and have a variety of wondrous powers including the ability to change to different forms. This makes them incredibly versatile, but also difficult to manage at times.

Powers: All characters have two basic power sets that they pull their abilities from. They specialize in what they want to do. For example, scrappers have a primary set that determines their attacks and a secondary set that determines their defenses. A scrapper could choose to wield a broadsword, attack using martial arts or channel dark energy into their fists, just to name a few. They might also have the ability to regenerate or maybe they have super reflexes. There are also groups of powers called 'Pool Powers' that can be taken as early as 6th level and support your primary abilities.

QUOTE
In addition to that, I also have a few specific questions:

-Does the game use the instancing model like Guild Wars? Or is it free-roaming like most other MMO’s?

Since this is the only MMO I've played, I'll have to pass this off to more diverse players.

QUOTE
-Does the game have dungeon type areas or similar? And are these compulsory to play through?

Again, I have no frame of reference, having only played CoH/CoV.

QUOTE
-What is the level cap? And how long does it take the average player to reach it? (Playing 2-3 hours a day, maybe more at weekends).

Current level cap on CoH is lvl 50. How fast you get there depends on how you play. I've played for over a year now and have yet to reach 50, but I'm an alt junkie and like to try out all the different power combinations (and there are a lot). There are those that are more focussed and have several lvl 50's running around. You'll probably need more input on this one.

QUOTE
-How reliant is the game on armour and weapons?

Not at all. CoH uses things called enhancements to amp the speed, power, accuracy, etc. of various powers. These can be bought, traded and sold. There is no money, but there is a system of 'influence' that you accumulate and can spend to increase your capabilities. There are a number of supplimental temporary powers that show up from time to time, but these are not tradable or able to be enhanced.

QUOTE
-What is PvP like?

PvP is limited in this game compared to what I've heard about in some other MMO's. PvP is limited to certain zones. Currently there are 3 zones with another on the way. Three (including the new one) allow you to go all out with the folks playing City of Villains while the fourth is a free-for-all zone where no one is safe and nothing is sacred. These zones are level-limited, which means you have to be of at least a certain level to get into them. However, as an equalizer, all individuals are bumped up or down to a specific level at each zone, which may bump up your power levels or cause you to lose powers (depending on if your actual level is above or below the level regulated by the zone). There is also an arena which allows for 1 on 1 or group combats in a player-controlled environment.

QUOTE
-Does the game have guilds?

Guilds? Yes and no. I know that some games require you to go to a specific guild to level (if that's what you're talking about). In CoH, everyone has equal opportunity to level up without the requirement of a guild. All you have to do is go to one of the hero-trainers (there's one in almost every zone) and train up. Simple. There are, however, player-created super groups that allow benefits such as bases and a more guaranteed player base for grouping.

QUOTE
-Does the game have any trade skill professions? (e.g. armoursmithing, cooking, or whatever superheroes do lol).

Not currently, although the developement staff has something like that in the works that they are trying to perfect.

QUOTE
-How much does the game cost?

Currently, CoH costs around $30 for purchase. Cost per month is about $15 per month, although I believe you get a discount for purchasing several months of service at once. This cost gets you 8 characters on each of 11 (I think) servers, for a total of 88 characters for your monthly fee. There are also additional benefits if you also have CoV (see below)

QUOTE
-Are there any expansions?

The only purchasable expantion is City of Villains also for around $30. If you have both games, you get an additional 4 slots per server to devote to either heroes or villains (total of 12 toons per server or 132 characters), along with some additional costume content for the already spectacular character creator. And the beauty of it is, you can be subscribed to both games and your monthly cost is still only $15.

QUOTE
-Does the game get new content added regularly through patches?

Yes. There are several patches (called Issues) turned out each year. Issue 7 is currently live on the test server (technically making a total of 12 servers if I remember right) and should be available on all servers by the end of the month if they remain on schedule.

RE: Why should I buy CoH? A few questions.

1st off Welcome to the best site on the network, One Swordsman!

QUOTE
I was wondering if you guys could sum the game up for me?

It is a very easy game. You go through character creation (put aside a lot of time for this, it took me 1 1/2 hours for my 1st character, lots and lots of choices). After you have created your character (decided AT [archtype] and don't worry about which origin as far as I know they still don't mean anything yet), you will start off in a very, very complete tutorial. It takes you step by step through all of the basics, you run a few missions and after you have finished the one indoor mission you will level up to level 2 and be told to go train and who your first contact is.

You will receive numerous contacts though out the game who will give you missions. You can only have 3 missions at one time, so you will be going back to your contacts quite a bit. The missions they give you will either be indoors (instanced) or outdoors (take place in the public area). It is pretty easy to tell which ones are instanced when you are reading them. Normally the outdoor ones invlove killing X amount of some villain. You do get bonuses for completeing the missions, and you get xp for all the bad guys you kill.

One of the things I love most about CoH is there is no economy. There is no loot, there is no gear. The only thing you have are enhancements, and if you have the influence (which is the money in CoH) you can buy them and stay on top of your game. Enhancements can be bought in stores, and your contacts will also sell them to you (the more missions you do for them, the wider the varity they give you).

And um... I know yo said short, but you can't expect short from an addict.

I actually figured out why this matters. Please see Jordan's Character Generation Guide, 5th major heading down.

In short, they affect what kind of enemy types you'll fight early on and somewhat later as well. There is also a special power that you get for the first 10 levels only which is based on your origin (see the article for the rundown).

I thought more than on contact gave out the badge missions, so it was available to everyone. Wow, so many changes, I'll never learn it all again.

There are also additional benefits if you also have CoV (see below)

if you are looking for a cheaper price on the game, you can go to Wally-mart. they don't really compete with the "game" store chains. you can pick it up for ~$20(maybe less)i have found this true with most PC software, specifically.

Wow so many replies! Thanks everyone, this game sounds very interesting, especially the no armour/weapon part which sounds really interesting and fresh.

I'll check out all the links you guys gave me, and after that I'll most probably buy the game =D

Once again thanks everyone!

FYI, someone might have a free week trial lying around. That would suit you fine, because you can download the game software. The only reason to buy it in the store is for the cheaper than online price.

Aren't they planning to make the origin powers permanent with I7? I thought I read that somewhere.

Yes, I read that as well. Something CuppaJo said but with few details.
