| QUOTE | Bots Banned 26 May 2006
In our continuing efforts to preserve a solid game economy and to support the legitimate Guild Wars player, we have been actively pursuing those who use "bots" in Guild Wars. In the last week, we have closed more than one thousand accounts of those using third-party programs, and we will continue to take similar action in the future. |
Finally Anet takes action to get rid of those pesky economy ruining bots!

Only problem with this is that a lot of those Chinese workers will lose their jobs because they won't be able to bot anymore.
Good for us bad for them.

But that doens't make sense. They wouldn't be bots then. It would fall under a different section of breaking the rules.
Oneill: Lose it. It means, go crazy. Nuts. Bonzo. No longer in possession of one's faculties - three fries short of a happy meal - WACKO!

No BS. I was the only human there.
All the other players were Mo/W with stupid made up names. Just random strings of characters.
Perhaps they were people, but none of them were using the chat, and no one wanted to run the mission with me.
one way or the other, hooray again for banning bots

I'm still skeptical.. still when i go international droks and elonas and augury and dont see any mo/w bots..then i'll say horray. Until then i just see it as an empty promise that they have been making for a long time now.

Well I bet there are tens or hundreds of thousands of bot users. So it will be difficult for them to get rid of all of them. But hey at least its a start. At least now the more casual bot users will think twice of using them because they might get their accounts banned or wutever it is Anet does to the accounts.

This is brilliant news. Maybe the economy will slow down a bit now that these bots have stopped producing huge amounts of cash and items.
I am just wondering though, wont the bots just mutant to aviod being detected and deleted? On several other olnine games the bots simple update once a clearance like this is made. Hopefully Anet will outsmart these bots and destroy!

Well the thing is no matter how well the bots are coded they're merely just macros.
The only way that the bots would be able to be undetectable would be if they were also implemented with a complex AI system that can analyse and respond to messages.
There are programs kinda like that like the iGod thing but even then the bot is just too stupid to be considered human.

Let me go check the usual botting areas..
Drok's Int 1 is still crawling with 55 mo/w and sell bots..
Augury is botless
and elona...
Sorry for being a skeptic but ANet promissed to rid the game of bots before and all they said was "We are doing something i promise but we cant tell you what it is. We also cant tell you how its going or how many bots we have banned" So i dont think i will fall for it again until i see results.

The number of bots is astronomical. Also it depends upon the servers. If theyve only gotten around to banning 1000 bots across all servers, that is a rather small ratio. The fact theyre banning bots however is good news tho. So theres nothing to be skeptical about. You just have to take in the fact 1000 bots across all servers is a very small majority of bots and easily replaceable by the botting parties. So its not that they are not fullfilling theyre promise to try and do something. Quite the contrary, they are. However due to the large amount of bots the actual visible effects are minute. 1000 bots is not hard at all to replace. You cannot expect such an extensive problem to just disappear in a few days Nihil, it does take time. And it may never go away no matter how many bots they ban. Afterall for every bot there may be 1-2 additional bots to take its place.

Oh no i'm not saying that 1k bots banned isnt a start..i'm just skeptical that they will continue to do it. I mean it all seems...well..fishy to me.. I dont know maybe i'm reading too far into it but events lately seem odd.
First there was a release of Factions, people were dissapointed and ANet was put under alot of pressure because they didnt deliver on alot of things they promised. Even Gaile went on the defensive after getting chewed out about not providing the right information. Then ANet started to do alot of radical changes like the spam filter which they produced out of nowhere. They still came under fire for that but people said "at least they are doing something" and now this.. I dont know..seems to me like they are trying to win the trust of the players back but i could be wrong.
Either way i'll be watching the bot situation to see if there is a general decrease in botting activity in the major areas.

I wonder if we will actually see GM in the game. Or do they have this special ability that allows them to be invisible to us?

it happens with every game.. they try to make changes.. they try to give you a date.. Then their "guys in charge" give them a deadline.. They may have to rush to get it done.. I'm sure they don't always want to.. But it happens..
It depends on how big the company is and how many people there are to work on it..
Thats one thing about subscription games, they usually have the money to employ more people.. Meaning better upkeep with the game. Ya Anet has different games with subscription..
But usually the money isn't spread evenly.. Each area gets money from profits plus a little more.. with subscriptions being nulled in this, their budget is lower so things may be slower to get accomplished.
I don't work for Anet, so what I put could be completely wrong.. Its just what I've noticed..
Banning Bots - It's a tough battle, In Diablo2 they tried to ban bots.. but over-time it failed.. I even see banners on this site and others that supply dupes and bots for it. They would ban the account, then the isp.. But they just gotta make/buy more accounts and/or change their isp address and they can keep doing it..

I've seen a rich man beg. I've seen a good man sin. I've seen a tough man cry.
I've seen a loser win And a sad man grin. I heard an honest man lie.
I've seen the good side of bad And the down side of up And everything between.
You know where it ends. Yo, it usually depends on where you start.
At least that's what they say when you play the game.

ANet are doing things... Augury was the biggest problem, and they sorted that out... Now the bots have moved, but do we really want ANet to nerf all the farming spots?
So now they've banned a 1000 accounts, do we expect the multi-million$ syndicates to just stop and say "Well it was good while it lasted"? - No... they'll just spend another $50,000 of their $5 Million bank account on 1000 more bots. I don't think it will hurt them that much.
---
ANet have found themselves between a rock and a hard place, they could solve the current problem very quickly... using a number of solutions.
1) Remove the -50hp focii and nerf Prot Spirit.
2) They could spend 1000s of man hours policing the game.
3) They could liberally ban anybody suspected of botting.
4) The could give mobs solo-farming counter-skills.
There are lots of possible solutions, all of them will hurt the regular gamer. What do we expect them to do? And if they then did any of those - can we all say we'd accept the changes for the good of the community? Or will we all just start moaning about it as usual?
-
In conclusion: We want ANet to do more, but we're not prepared to suffer the consequences. If ANet do more, we'll have more to maon about.

There's a huge difference in the way a bot farms and a human player moves... they don't just ban solo farmers... they watch people they suspect and if they persistently follow the exact route (EXACTLY) then they'll continue to record the info... A Human player may take the same route, but there'll be variations, like stopping for a break, irractic walking, chatting in Guild chat, whispers... If you've ever watched a bot, they repeat everything a the exact order and path, when I solo, I'm usually all over the place.
