RE: Any advice for a Noob?

1st off Welcome to the site, Forumsigs!

As for advice, how about you answer a few questions first. What kind of character do you like to play? Are you the type that likes to charge into the battle first and grab all the aggro from the villains, or do you like healing the team and keeping them buffed? Maybe you prefer dishing out lots and lots of damage.

You can also check out some helpful guides we have here on Gameamp. One of the best ones (espicially for just starting out) is Jordan's Teaming and Archetype Roles Guide. You may want to browse our entire Guides section, you can do a search for all sorts of fun things.

And if you DO have a perfered playing style let us know, and we can direct you in the direction of what you may find most enjoyable.

RE: Any advice for a Noob?

I tend to like the support style or behind the scenes making a difference buffs or even healing but I also like to get in the mix sometimes too so I guess that is what makes it so hard lol...thanks for the warm welcome it is a good start knowing the community is nice...

Yes the community here is very nice. ^^

Since you like supportive roles, a Defender is more than likely best suited for you. Empathy will allow you to heal and buff. A controller with an Empathy or Kinetics secondary might also be good for you. That way you can debuff the baddies while keepin your team healed. Though the heals for a Kinetics secondary Controller are..somewhat limited.

RE: Any advice for a Noob?

From the sound of it Defender is definately the way to go. But pick up a Radiation or Dark defender. As an Empath you are almost strictly healing, although I am sure some empaths out there will beat me up now. As Rad or Dark defender you are actually more buffer/debuffer and you get some very nasty attacks as well.

But the coolest thing about City of Heroes is that you don't need to get it right the first time. It is so much fun to create and try out new heroes. And once you get a feeling for the game levelling a new hero to level 10 won't take you more than a few hours. Especially since money and inventory barely play a role, there is no waste in trying something new.

RE: Any advice for a Noob?

I have to agree on the defender choice, any are good but as mentioned above I like rad and dark, partly because Empaths are expected to be on it with the heals more than the others since emps are "healers" so that may be a lot of pressure while you are learning. After you play a bit you may like to try one, plenty of slots to experiment with. I love my Dark Defs but also really enjoyed playing my emp (who only has 2 or 3 attacks).

RE: Any advice for a Noob?

I would agree with what the others have said. An Empathy Defender tends to be looked at mainly as a healer. Mine only have 2 (maybe 3) attacks and everything else is for team support.

In one night I played on two pick up groups. The first group needed little healing so I mainly buffed and attacked. But the second was a full group of 8 that had me healing the entire time. Every once in a while I would get an attack off, but there were battles that I didn't shoot once all I did was keep people alive. Personally, that is extremely fun for me. It makes me feel good to know that I helped keep the heroes alive and we make through a tough battle.

Any defender can be a tough character to start with, unless you have played a MMORPG before. I might suggest you start with a blaster or scrapper, just to get used to the game and team play. If you are familiar with it, I would definitely suggest a Radiation or Dark defender. You aid the team with support but do a good amount of attacking as well.

Good luck and ask as many questions as you want, we are all here to help.

RE: Any advice for a Noob?

Ok, I reccomend a Kinetics Defender or Controller for ya. I personally prefer controllers over defenders. You see, to me, controlling IS support. Plus, I get 3 ownage pets :) It could be said that their agro grabbing helps the team :P Well, I also did it for the whole containment+Uber Fulcrum shift damage buff combo... but that waits till epics. Sure, you get less in terms of numbers, and the powers come later, but it's all good. I mean, you want a pure empath? Sure, go make a defender, and I know there are some great control/support defender combos, but I think controll adds to support more than a damage set.

RE: Any advice for a Noob?

I just made my first hero the other day. I made a Kinetics/Elec defender and I enjoy playing like that. It's a good mix of support and damage for me. The one thing I enjoy the most is being the team teleporter. I took teleportation when I got to lvl 6 and got to choose a power pool. It's fun to be the one that can pull a dead team memeber back to the rest once he makes it back to the same zone. It's also pretty handy, if you time it right, say one of your team members gets him/herself in a bit of a sticky situation, you can teleport them back to you and get them outta the way of the baddies till they can heal up. That's my opinion.

RE: Any advice for a Noob?

An empathy/dark defender would be a great build to start out with. You get to get in the mix as well as support your team. Even as you are getting into the mix (with your dark blasts), you are debuffing them. Your dark powers will debuff thier accuracy, damage resistance, and also slow them down. Then with the empathy you can heal yourself and your team, as giving RA, fortitude, etc.

A controller might be another AT you would enjoy. Both defender and controller can be a slow climb up the XP ladder if you solo a lot, but it can still be done. If you are one of those ATs you will probably want to team. That way you can help others. It is a great feeling either keeping your team healed or the bad guys so debuffed and held they can't attack your team mates. I have a mind control/kinetics controller that I really enjoy playing. Great holds for damage and great buffs for you and your team. But I like all of the controller power sets. My Ice/Force field controller Glasher, was the first character I ever made and it was a lot of fun making the climb to 50.

Another AT you might consider would be a tanker. I consider my tanker as a support AT. I support the team by keeping the bad guys off of my team mates. I also get to kick a little bad guy backside in the process. With a good tanker on your team, things really seem to go smoother. And if you can't find a team, you will also be able to solo without any problems. Soloing a defender or controller can be a little scary sometimes. I just absolutely love getting right in the middle of everything and laughing while they try to pound on me. The early stages of a tanks life can be a little hectic, but after a short while you start to get be a TANK. The early life of a controller or defender can be a little easier than a tank because you are not right in the middle of everything. But later in your levels people really apreciatte ANY of these ATs.

Also, if you want to PVP, a Tanker or Controller can really rock in PVP. As a defender you have a HUGE bullseye on your chest, back, arms, forhead, neck, uhhh you get the picture.

RE: Any advice for a Noob?

First off, welcome to the site, Forumsigs. It's great to have you.

Now, to my answer concerning your question. If you haven't played the game yet, then it's hard to say what type of AT that you'll enjoy. When I ventured over to WoW, I wasn't very interested in a support role because the heals and buffs were too time consuming and, sometimes, useless. However, I'm all support on CoH (Controllers). So I think the first thing we should do is give you a quick look at what each AT does, and you can move forward from there.

Tanker - major defense and moderate damage; contains aggro

Blaster - major damage and minor defense; brings the pain but drops to the might of a soft breeze

Scrapper - moderate damage and moderate defense; the front line warrior; these cats jump in the fray and mix it up; they also have the ability to pull off critical hits

Defender - minor damage and moderate defense; this is the buffing/debuffing AT, but their secondary sets come from the Blaster pool

Controller - minor damage and minor defense; my personal favorite; they don't solo very well, but they can be an amazing asset in any team; this is the pet AT of the game

I agree with the others that you should probably start out somewhere in the Defender or Controller areas, but check out the others as well. You never know what might catch your attention. Good luck, bubba.

Wow guys thanks for the advice what an awesome community of players!!! If the whole community is like this im in for a treat. Thanks for answering all my questions, it defienitely let me know I am headed in the right direction. I definietly like the support role so, your descriptions helped me to summarize best the character that will suit my play style. And like many of you said after I get the hang of things I can always choose a different toon!

RE: Any advice for a Noob?

Let me give you some recommendations if you're coming at this as a new player. Support is a bit more difficult to play than a more straight-up attack style. Blasters and Scrappers are better suited to beginners since they are more straightforward. However, since support is my favorite position as well, I'll give you my take on it.

Defenders and Controllers are my favorite archtypes. If you're looking for teaming from the start, there are some sets you'll want to look into.

If you're wanting to do healing, you'll probably want to work with Empathy or Radiation, although Dark and Kinetics are both pretty good.

Empathy is the most straightforward of the buffing/healing sets. It has no weird drop powers, no to-hit rolls, just straight-up heals and buffs. Unfortunately that's all you do.

Radiation is a nice debuff set with an AoE heal and a good buff built in. It's main issue is that its best effects are what are called anchor toggles. They are 'anchored' in that you choose a foe to act as the center of the effect. Then you 'toggle' them on, meaning they keep running so long as you have the endurance, the anchor dies, or you turn it back off. It's keeping the anchor from dying until the rest of the group is dealt with that presents the problem.

Dark Miasma is a favorite of mine. It is primarily a debuff set, but it also has a good heal and good resurrection power. Unfortunately, all this healing and rezing requires enemies around to hit, meaning (especially with the heal) no hit means no effect, a bad thing to happen in a pitched battle. However it presents some nice control effects which makes your job a little easier.

Kinetics is a very strong set, but takes a bit of getting used to. It has several good buffs, but a lot of its area effects require you to hit enemy targets to utilize. Also, its heal is centered around an enemy, making it necessary for anyone to be close to receive its effects.

If you just want to buff, consider also Force Field and Sonic Resonance. Both specialize in amping people's abilities to survive damage. Force Field improves defense (the ability to avoid damage entirely) and suppliments with some knock-back effects. Sonic Resonance improves damage resistance (lowers the damage your party takes), and also has some good debuffs for enemy damage resistance.

For offense for a defender, I'd recommend Dark, Psychic or Energy Blast. Dark Blast is highly versatile with a number of control-like effects and is a rarely resisted damage type. Psychic has the best range in the game and is also less resisted. Energy has some nice knockback effects and does decent damage.

If you choose to go with a controller, consider Earth, Fire or Illusion.

Earth Control is a low damage set, so you won't be able to solo until you get access to your pet at level 32, but it has no less than 6 large AoE control effects, making you a crowd control guru, limiting your need to heal.

Fire Control is also slow in the early game, but their big draw is their pets, a trio of Fire Imps which wade into melee and rip up your enemies.

Illusion Control is actually light on the control, but gets pets early and includes the ability to render your group invisible, which also adds defense (which stacks with the defenses from other sources like Force Field, btw.).

Anyway, I hope this helps.

If you have any questions at all, please do ask. We love new players! And we really do love helping them.

So when you pick your AT let us know, and we can get you some nice tips for it.

As for the community... CoH is the BEST MMO community I've ever encountered. Honestly. I've played a lot of MMOs, and none compare to the amount of nice people you run into in game.

OH and when you pick a server let us know, we have members on all the servers.

RE: Any advice for a Noob?

Sorry if I'm redundent. No time to read all the posts.

My first advice is to listen to almost nobody including me.

Right here on this site is a list of powers and what they do. Go read them. Decide how you like to play and what things go with it.

Go in game and try some of those things. Or try some stuff even without reading here.

The one thing I have found is, while there are a few "uber" combo's, nearly any combo of powers will work... Depending on yoru play style. You need to discover your play style and that will lead you to the best match for you.

Naestra of the Irda - 39 Gravity/Empathy Controller
Naestra - 21 Energy/Energy Blaster
Seraphim Naestra - 20 Storm/Archery Defender
Darkwalker Naestra - 6 Illusion/Empathy Controller
Ms Egypt - 17 Gravity/Empathy Controller
Secret Fire - 16 Stone/Stone Tank
Dark Flamebird - 14 Fire/Fire Blaster
Ms. Webber - 15 Assault Rifle/Fire Blaster
Your Dad's Secretary - 11 Katana/Regen Scrapper

Thanks to TheJeni for mentioning my teaming guide. It's a good place to start for team play. However, I can see that many people suggested a dark defender and I have a great guide just for that character type at Jordan's D3 Guide

I also have a fairly comprehensive character creation guide HERE

You already found a great community and that will help a lot (that'd be us by the way :)

RE: Any advice for a Noob?

one thing, not to be as play style, but advice for a new player: dont let n00bs get u down, for yes, even u cann succumb to their annoying-ness. also, there may be some higher level players that try to get u down, but dont worry about them either. just remember that other people playing are people too, and their feelings might be frayed easily.

Yeah every user that logs on here is extremely nice and helpful. I asked about my character and got a lot of responses in about one day's time. I'm new here too as you can see by my post count and credibility points but I'm loving it. Tons of helpful info and whatever hasn't been posted as a guide or Tip/Hint I can ask about on the forums and almost certainly get an answer. You've found yourself a good site here. Hope to have you around for a good while. If you're ever on the Virtue server I'll be glad to team with ya. My character's name is Terra Spectre. :)

RE: Any advice for a Noob?

Here is my two cents...

First of don't feel "married" to your first choice. If you make a Defender and hate the combo..... well ditch and try another combonation of powersets.

Next, my best piece of advice is to build a few other toons. Build a Tanker, build a Controller, build a Blaster. I think I learned more about what toon I wanted to play to 50 by experimentation than I did by recomendation and placid research.

Most of ..... have fun doing it all. :)

I've still never rolled a 'troller :) Can't find a build that looks like fun compared to just building a Defender with the same power set (secondary anyway). I'm sure I'll do it eventually.

I've only built one tank before too. Took her to 14 and got bored.

Never got a blaster past level 10 :)

That kind of makes my point, you never know until you try. Personally the thought of a controller for me was boredom, but after trying an Empathy Defender and a few Controller powerset combos I found a fun Controller and learned to stop grumbling at my computer screen at the empathy defenders.......those guys have to work hard sometimes......lol

Personally I think a Controller with an Empathy secondary is a lot more fun than an Empathy primary Defender. If all you do is heal over and over again it can get boring. But as a controller you can heal, but can also attack baddies when no one in your teams needs heals. And if the team has an Empathy primary Defender..you can go hog wild disabling the baddies. :D

Wow nice to know others like me exist. You see when I started really getting into the game I was afraid of the community, afraid that I would mess up and make everyone mad, so I wanted something that could be seen working as well as felt. I eventually landed on the controller, and thats where I have been stationed ever since, I can't play any other type because Controllers are just to much fun for me. I am not going to force off any choices on you because I myself had to go through several before finally figuring out which was my favorite but I will tell you why in the end I chose...

The Earth / Kinetics Controller.

Earth has a lot of defense debuffing powers, in fact nearly all the powers have it, and you have a few that are mainly for this. This mean that the team can hit more often, which means more damage is dealth, which means the mobs go down quicker.

As well the Earth Set is very very animated, if its and earth power you can see it working and working well. I am a firm believer that this set also holds the most immob/holding powers and one of the coolest combo powers out there (Stalagmites + Stone PrisonS).

As for kinetics, I played with a lot of different toons before landing on the controller and I found that Endurance was as vital, if not more vital, than HP even. Kinetics set was built for this very reason. It can restore a party with no endurance to a party with full endurance in one click later in the game but even at earlier levels it is a buffing powerset like no other featuring such powers as siphon power (takes damage from the enemy and gives to the entirety of people standing around you) and the coup de grace Speed Boost (aptly named supa crack). This power alone provides the person enhanced by it, speed and the ability to regenerate Endurance at nigh deplenishable rates.

This was my choice, and I am definitely not saying it is the best, but I am saying that this powerset never left me bored and always provided me with the feeling that i needed to continue leveling, a feeling of being in the mix while being as subtle as possible.

RE: Any advice for a Noob?

My Terra Spectre is an Earth/Empathy Controller. I'm considering remaking her in to a Kinetics because as it is, I'm level 6 and haven't even gotten Heal Other because the primary powers are just too awesome(stone cages ROCKS)! I think I will do that infact. And I better do it now while I'm barely a few levels young so I don't get to like level 20 and say "Okay this sucks...I should remake." There goes a couple days (wishful thinking?) of work down the tubes. lol

RE: Any advice for a Noob?

Actually I will take the opp. to play a few styles to get a feel and yeah Im a brand noob lol!!!! Has been a while since Ive had to say that. Scrapper might be fun too so I think I will try it as well since it may a teake a few to get used to the game. I definitely dont want to "fail"at my job as support so it may be the thing to do(get used to the game first) plus just having a few toons will allow me to get an even better since of what I want to do.

Thanks again guys!!!!

Yes Ive seen such cases before. None of them ever grow up to be wise and old. What good is the wisdom of 5 low level toons?
lol =)D

RE: Any advice for a Noob?

For a new player I would probably reccomend an empathy defender, maybe with Radiation or electrical for a secondary. As you get more experienced i would say move to a kinetics controller. They are a blast. My 50 is an empathy defender and the role is easy to fill (your the healer, no one expects more) and he was fun.

But my new Illusion/kinetics controller rocks! I can heal, especially the tanks and scrappers in direct contact with the bad guys (who need it most) but I also get a lot of the specialty powers that emps do, ie. a clear mind power (increase density) and speed boost can work as a great mini RA. Fulcrum shift is awesome on damage enhancing and siphon speed and inertial reduction makes it so I didnt even have to get a travel pool power. And of course transference, the only point and shoot end enhancer I know of. It takes a more advanced player to know how to play the kinetics, but if you do it is incredible.

And this isn't even mentioning the illusion powerset. It certainly has some oomph in the damage catagory. I soloed up to 15 with mine. But any of the controller powers would be a good match with Kinietics.

So the short answer, emp defender to start, kinetics controller to move up. Thats my two and a half cents worth.
