transgender heroes

ok not the heroes themselves, but the people playing them.

it might just be me, i've tried to make a heroin, but don't like playing them at all. maybe cause i'm not a chick, maybe cause i feel kinda creepy checking out the hot heroins running around. but it just doesnt fly for me.

how does everyone else feel about this? i did think about making a toon with a female body type, but is really a male that was experimented on (or something along those lines).

RE: transgender heroes

In most cases you can spot a guy that's made a female toon. They were obviously thinking like a guy when they rolled them up in the character creator. I make mostly male toons, but have several female ones I love to play.

A W Hotstuff is based on my GF. 4'11" of pure firey wrath! It's the only time I get to make her do everything I tell her to do! Started with the classic school girl outfit.

Naked Aggreshun is a large woman made out of mud weilding a big hammer. By no means pretty. Most have commented that she's the scariest looking female heroine that they've seen. I like that!

It is nice to see a hot hero woman kickin some butt. I know some male players that NEVER rolled up male toons. Most of my concepts come from the voices in my head and what I would consider alternate personalities. So most of my toons end up male.

It is funny to get hit on when I'm playing a female toon though. Let them get all worked up then shoot them a tell just before I leave the conversation: "Look closer dude. I've got an adam's apple!" Mwa Ha Ha Ha!

I also have a bunch of test toons that are female. I have a whole slew of Female Ill/??? Trollers on one of the servers for testing. Virtue I think.

RE: transgender heroes

I tried the whole female hero thing once, and it was just weird for me. I think I'm bothered by the idea that people will automatically assume that I'm a female...And I don't blame them. I try my best to do otherwise when I meet female heroes, but it's difficult to ignore the virtual image. I don't expect other players to wonder if I'm male or female when I'm playing a male toon, so why is the opposite such an issue? It's very confusing for me.

RE: transgender heroes

I have a hard time playing male characters... I simply sometimes forget that I'm not playing one of my ladies.

Mr Russia... everyone I team with assumes he's gay... cause well I just forget sometimes and make some distinctly female comment.

I don't mind men playing women, or women playing men... heck.. that's what a game like this is for. :) Some people can play the other gender well... my dad was good at playing women in our D&D campagins where as hubby... well hubby can't play anything other than a man... won't even roll up a female character. :)

RE: transgender heroes

I have one female toon, and she is my Peacebringer. I tried for about 2 hours to design a costume for a Male and just couldn't come up with one.(Guess I should have asked Firespray :p).

I have no problem playing a female toon, I just usually pick powersets I don't like and they end up getting deleted.

I will quote my buddy Matjan on this subject.

Ahem... " If I am going to spend this much time behind a toon I might as well enjoy it".

I have no problem playing female toons, although I prefer playing males. Being gay myself, I have no problems getting in touch with my fem side. When I encounter a female toon, I assume my 'drag-queen etiquette'. Basically, that means always calling her 'she'. I just play like she's female until I hear otherwise.

Only one of my female toon has made it past around level 10 and not been deleted and that is Twilight Blade, my stalker. I don't know why it is. Maybe its some psychological thing - I associate women with sneaky-ness, evil and stabbing in the back? Hmm. (j/k)

RE: transgender heroes

LOL. OK, I respect that so far most of the posts have been "I play male toons..." with a little bit of axceptions.

But here is the real world... I am female. I play female toons. Out of probibly 30+ toons I have created maybe 4 male and only one have I played to lvl 20. Well over half of the toons in game at any given time are female. Trust me when I tell you, well over half the players in the game at any given time are NOT female. I'm not claiming there are no female players. In fact I was origionally suprised to find out how many female players of these games there are. But trust me, it's not near half. I get called "dude" or assumed to be a guy all the time. I also get hit on more than plenty.

Really there is nothing wrong with playing the opposite sex (to my mind.) There are really 2 different ways people "see" their toon. Either you think the toon is you brought to life inside the world of the game. If that is the case it's very likely you would want to play the same gender you are in life... Makes it easier to see it as you. Or you don't see your toon as you but instead see it as an avatar, a champion of you so-to-speak. In that case what is sexier than having a bad @ whatever of the opposite sex kicking butt in your name? That is esentially where the comment "If I'm going to have to look at the back sides of somebody all game long it's going to be a hot chick..." comes from.

Many people fall in the middle and play both, for the reasons above, just sometimes one reason and sometimes the other. Even the comment about the toon based on your GF is esentially that she is out there kicking behinds as your champion.

That all said I will tell you a story. I have a very good friend in RL who is half the reason I started playing these games at all. She plays WOW, not COH (and trust me... is pissed I stopped playing WOW to play COH.) She often but not exclusively plays male characters. Paladin being her favorite. After a few weeks of playing, actually more like few months, she met another paladin and they tended to run around together. This other paladin was a male char being played by a male and for whatever reasons he assumed she was also male. Between the time we played and they played she had worked herself up to say the mid 30's in level, not power leveling but plenty of play time (just to give you an idea of how long this took.) Well eventually the friendship extended to outside the game and of course then he realizes he is really a she. A few months go by and at this point, my friend no longer lives here, she lives about 300 miles away, with him.

So the morral of the story... Everybody likes to wonder about why guys like to build female toons and oh, sure you can tell when guys make female toons... They always have long legs and big breasts... (Did I mention the first edit I do in the toon builder is longer legs???) But really are you that all fired sure that guy you've been hanging out with in your SG is a guy? Not all female players are female toons too...

When I first started playing MMOs I honestly was afraid to play a female. All of my characters were male. And I RP'ed them. And unless I told the person I was talking to that there was a female behind the computer, they never had any idea.

When I first got CoH and sat down to make my first character, I had no choice but to make a female. It took me 1 1/2 hours to go through the costume options and decide on a look. And the male costumes weren't nearly as cool looking.

Since creating Liz the Lizzard, I have not created another male character. I learned that there is nothing to really be worried about by playing a female. Most people think I'm a guy in game (unless they get to know me), and when I tell them I'm female, they figure I'm lying. I don't get hit on at all either.

I don't think I would have problems playing male characters again, but it seems that most games have cooler costumes for females than males. And what is the point of playing a game for hours on end when you can't stand what it looks like?

RE: transgender heroes

I was reading this and it kind of intrigued me, i guess...

I don't really play female toons, mainly cuz when I make a character the gender build the creator is on is male. I have one female character and i think its fun to let ppl think im female then after its completely OBVIOUS to everyone flirting is happening i tell them im male :D they dont really talk to me much after that...

i, also, assume that when the toon is female the person playing is female. and i admit i have been the guy who, after many flirtatious comments, was told the person was male...very embarrassing...

my eighty, uhm, seven cents...now i cant pay my cell bill...

RE: transgender heroes

i've run into plenty of girls as guy toons. usually when i talk to someone in game, i call them dude or chick or whatever based on the toon itself. but i tend to just call everyone dude.

i really dont find the back of female toons particularry attractice, they are still toons.

Early on I learned this rule of ettiqutte and it works well. I consider it respect for the character to refer to them by the character gender and it's less confusing to tell who you're talking about.

As to the original question, it never occured to me that it would be weird to play a male or female. Obviously Jordan is my favorite character and in general I like the female heroes I made better. However, I have plenty of male characters too, it just depends on the story.

I'm honestly surprised and refreshed to find women who play. I generally assume that anyone in game (either male or female toon) is actually male because I've never met many female gamers (although I hear that's changing).

Case in point, I was hit on once in Pocket D (sort of). This guy said, "whoa, your toon is hot!" and I said "thanks!" I just assumed it was a compliment to my character design ability.

RE: transgender heroes

I have no problem playing either toon gender either way.

i played demos to 50, and half the time he was running around half-naked in what i called his "supersayan outfit". it was really sparkly.

but when i got to 50, there had been waaaaaaay too many middle-aged males making toons that turn them on, so i made one to look like a superheroine, long cape, fully clothed, etc. and i enjoy the world (virtual world) through the eyes of a female. i get hit on by everyone under the sun, it seems... but thats ok. i kindly tell them it wouldnt work out...

I always assume people are whatever gender they are playing, if only because they might be RPing and it would break character for them to say "call me she...", or the fact that it actually might be a female playing and i really have no way of telling except by what gender their toon is.

RE: transgender heroes

i do agree that females have a much cooler costume selection, although females in RL overall have nicer clothes and can do much more with their wardrobe than guys.

i did try and make a female stalker once and really enjoyed the look of her, but never followed thru because i prefer heroes.
