Ok so get this.. i emailed WoW and i told them that i was unsure about getting the game and that i wanted to try it for free first for like 24 hours. They said that they didnt do that in the US but that i could buy the game and the first month was free and that i could return it and get a refund. Well i bought the game and i tried setting it up and they now tell me that i need to buy a pre-paid game card first. Those are non-refundable. So i called them today and they said that the first email was basically all a lie to get me to buy the game and now i need to buy a card just to play it and that i cant get a refund because i opened the box.

Haha they actually said that their first e-mail was a lie? That's kinda unprofessional imo.

You don't need a pre-paid card if you just put in your credit/debit card details - that's what I did when I tried it for a couple of weeks, then I just cancelled the account before my trial ended, as I decided not to continue playing it, so I was never charged.
Edit: Incidentally you don't even need to buy the game to play it, you can download the client, or I just borred the discs off a friend.

I'll bet they "meant" (but did not explicitly say, because that would be too obvious) that you could refund the first months play time (the $10-15 monthly charge only) through them, but the actual box purchase could not be refunded through them, and instead you would have to rely on the return policy of the store you got it from.
Sucks I know. I'm willing to bet it was a misdirect by omission kind of thing.
Actually that reminded me, I need to get my WoW off my card, cuz I'm not playing it at ALL.

No they said it quite explicitly..

The first month is only free if you put a game card or pay for a month with a credit card. If you just buy the game, you can't play. I got the game and a game card for my birthday, played it for about an hour or two, got to lvl 10, WoW I hated it. (especially when you die, you have to walk all over the place to res yourself >:( )
you gotta take the good with the bad, smile with the sad, love what you got, and remember what you had.

Yeah well they said it was risk free when i got the game and they didnt say anything about needing these things before i can set up an account. I dont live near a place where i can get a game card and i dont have a credit card. It doesnt seem "risk free" if they ask for these things. In a month i would have been back in college where i could have picked up one or the other...

Oh and now they wont even take my calls anymore. They hang up as soon as i give them my information and i was nothing short of patient with them through this whole thing. Seriously..if you planned to get WoW..dont get it. The service is incredibly poor.

That officially blows.
On a side note I've been in contact with A-net the past week about a bug my guild found with a specific build in heroes ascent. They sent me a couple of conformation emails saying blah blah the message has been passed to so and so...etc etc. Nect thing I know they send me an email saying that I didn't respond in time to their email and that the case has been closed. So...not sure what it was I was meant to respond to, I resubmitted the bug and got the same responce. A-net's support is not necessarily up to all that much either...although this might be an isolated incident, and seem fairly unimportant, the bug should be fixed and they don't seem to be handling it fairly poorly o.O

All the online games suck at one point or another. EQ, played that for 4 years, GMed 2 of them, burned me out, played SWG for a year, that burned me out, played CoH/CoV for 4 months, bleh, matrix was a joke, that lasted 14 hours, WoW about a year, after my 4th lvl60 (and no, its not really that hard at all) i burned out. unfortunately for me, GW is next, been a few days since ive been on starting to feel the burn on that. trialed RF online, ha! if you like ppl kill-stealing, and looting your kills, thats your game. not for me. Blizzard has at times bothered me when in came to support, but it seems most if not all games online have become this way. Its always check the knowledge base, and when you look for an email to contact them, its generally automated.

Its a pity you dont live in Australia. We have a AUD$2 sample card available. It gives you 14 days unlimited play. If you then decide to purchase the game you need only "activate" your account and your in.
I played it for the 14 days and then bought GW. Havent thought of going back to WoW.

I'm not a big WoW player, but I think that link is pretty clear. Are you guys saying that information is incorrect?

Not sure you you're referring to here, but I'm assuming I'm one of them. When I trialed WoW I borrowed a friends discs as it doesn't need the discs to run it. After getting all the updates I created an account, put in card details and a free trial code thingy (at the time you could invite a friend to WoW for a 14-day free trial - assume you still can) and played it for a week or two. I payed absolutely nothing, and just removed my card details when the trial was over. So I'm not saying the information there isn't correct, but what I just said is also true. Take it as you will.

Ah, that makes sense now; you didn't mention the code in your post. I think the main point is, to play WoW you must have:
#1 a valid code (either from the full game or some kind of trial code)
#2 a credit card (temporarily only, you can cancel before the trial period is over and get a refund) or a time card
It was too bad that Nihil Zarathustra said he doesn't have a credit card to use.
The box says, "FIRST MONTH OF PLAY INCLUDED" but I guess that is a little misleading.
For anyone else thinking of buying a game with a monthly fee (WoW, Lineage II, City of Heroes, etc.) I'd say make sure you read through all the information on their websites and don't just trust what some customer support email says.
One more question, Nihil Zarathustra. Did you actually enter in the Authentication Key here: https://signup.worldofwarcraft.com/authkey.html ?
If you did, then I assume you read this:
https://signup.worldofwarcraft.com/agreement.html
If you never entered your Authentication Key and you never actually Registered, then you might be able to get a refund:
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/legal/eula.html

The best way to get the one month free is after you buy the game go to there web site and register then download from there web site instead of installing from the disk.
I hope this will ease your pain =D
