Writing guides

I was thinking of writing a Martial Arts/Regeneration Scrapper guide but I have a couple questions before I do so.

First off: Is it possible to update the guide without having to post a completely new one? My Martial Artist is only at level 14 right now but it's worked out perfectly so far, and I wanted to share my build with others who are having trouble building a good Martial Artist. I would update it as I leveled up so that the community could stay up-to-date on my progress.

Secondly: Is it hard to get a guide approved by the SysAdmins? I don't want to go through the trouble of writing a guide just to have it get shot down, know what I mean? lol

Any answers will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

RE: Writing guides

Don't know about updating a guide, haven't come across that issue.. As far as submitting, my only tip would be to definitely cover material that you can't necessarily get from any of the publications. Like the binder guides or the game manual.

No. Guides can only have comments added to them.

RE: Writing guides

You can update your guide by adding comments, but it's better to finish your research before you write your guide. You'll probably end up writing a much better guide that way.

Wow..fast replies. lol

I'm in class right now (last day w00t!) I'll probably work on it later today. I think this guide should help a lot. This build has worked out perfectly for me. I don't die often(excluding when I'm fighting things like 3 or 4 levels above me)and my damage output is still pretty good. Granted, I'll have to see how it works as I progress in levels.

--EDIT--
RE: More research

Well I could do that but it'd take awhile considering finding a team seems to be pulling teeth lately on Virtue. Plus I'm still somewhat of a newbie to CoH myself so I don't know the methods to level quickly yet.

You cannot edit your own Guides.

I apologize for the incorrect response earlier.

RE: Writing guides

I have never written a guide but I do enjoy reading them. Many a guide has inspired me to indulge my alt-o-holic nature and roll a new toon. Here’s some suggestions based on what I like to see when reading a character creation guide…

First of all, what is the central idea behind your hero? Is your concept for solo or team play? Is it for PvE or PvP, or both? Your concept will help explain your choices of powers.

I think it’s OK to include a description of the powers, even if it’s right off the game. I also think it’s OK to include any stats that you might find on a hero planner or similar source, such as damage, recharge time, etc. Make sure you cite your sources! The most helpful thing, though, is that you give your personal opinion of the power. How does it work for you. Why did you include it in your build? (Or why not?)

Also very helpful are some insights into enhancements for any given power. How would you slot it and why? Did you find you needed 2 accuracies or only 1? Is a disorient duration helpful here?

Anyway, just some random thoughts. I look forward to reading it!

Well that just sucks. Get on that, admins! Add it in! lol

With all due respect not being able to edit guides is kinda stupid. Makes it so you can't udpate your guide as you go along. T_T

RE: Writing guides

I've written a couple of guides, and my Electrical Blaster guide is in sever need of a brush up to get up to date information since a couple of releases.

There is a topic somewhere on writing guides. I'll try to find the link. It has stuff like run it through a word editor first for spelling and stuff like that.

I keep my original copy of my guide on my PC. I really screwed one of them up, and was able to resubmit it, and put a comment in to have it replace the original so there were not two of them. The trick is to know who is in charge of that part of the site at the time. One already out there can be replaced by an admin I believe, the trick is not to tax that functionality. Don't resubmit it 5 times in a week because you didn't like the way you formatted it. Don't over work the staffers. But the way the game changes, there is a need to have guides re-writen due to some of the major changes.

If you were keeping up with current changes, and they were relavent to your guide, I don't think the staffers would mind a once an issue update to keep the information accurate.

Some tips of mine:

Re-read it multiple times. Will it makes sense to someone that does not know that AT, not just you?

Re-read it AGAIN...and again and again. I can read one of my guides 10 times and find a new mistake each time.

Read other guides on the same subject, but don't plagiarize. Seeing other writing styles and guide formatting can improve how you lay yours out.

Regular breaks in the content. If you have a 2 page guide that's all in one paragraph, no one will read it. It needs to flow, but not be painfull to get the information from.

Here's a trick I used to submit my last guide to make sure it looked good:

I found an old forum topic I had posted on a long time ago. Something no one was currently updating. I edited one of my posts and copied and pasted the guide into it, and evaluated it on this site, not just in my Word doc. The way it looked on the site inspired me to make additional changes. You can edit an old post over and over again before you submit the guide for real.

Keep track of where you put it, and clean up after yourself. Don't leave the proofreading post edit out there. Re-edit and remove the body of the guide, leaving your original comment.

I also put a disclaimer at the top of the post I was using that I was testing a guide's appearance before submitting. Just in case someone stumbled accross it.

Here's an example of my first guide: Guide to Electricity

Here's the second one I created: Fire/Kinetics Guide

You don't have to be as long winded as I am but try to offer up information that you can't get from the power description. Although some stuff I use is basic information, I tend to gather information you have to hunt all over to get and put it in one place. Then offer practical applications for powers.

You have to ask yourself:
What would a noob need to know to make a power selection while leveling?
How do you utilize sometimes rarely taken power selections?
Does this help anyone, or are you just stating the obvious?

Good luck on your guide. The sharing of experience is what this site is all about. There's always more than one way to skin an AT.

All due respect indeed, thats a bad wording if you wanted to have it added in. The biggest deal with that whole thing, is there are only 2 programmers that program this ENTIRE site. Not just CoH...but CoV, GW, WoW, D&L, etc. They probably didn't have a self guide editor because of the fact that most people don't write truly comprehensive guides until thier late 30's-50's after many many hours of trial and error, respecs, and down right all around experience.

However, just so you know, us staff members CAN go through and edit guides that have already been submitted. It's a huge chunk of time to do it is what I am betting though. No one has ever actually asked grant you, and I hope not to get a ton of requests now to change it, but hey that's what us staffers are for. To monitor the monkeys...and umm maybe I've said to much already :P

It is a whole lot easier though to just edit them in the comments section. You know, add on to what you already have , this way as to make it easier still on us.
