Someone told me about some free weekend this weekend? Can someone explain that? Can a person who has never before played get the weekend for free or something?

I do not fall into this category, but from what I gather, anyone who has had a CoH/CoV account in the past but has discontinued it, is being invited back into the fold for a free weekend to taste the new I7 content. I think theJeni can comment better on it because I think she is currently benefiting from this.

OK, now I understand. So a friend who plays WOW can't "try this out" this way. It's to try to get existing players back into the "shell out the cash" mode.

Yep, this is exactly correct. You have to have had a CoH/CoV account in order to benifit from this. All accounts right now are activated. But if you have never played before, it doesn't apply.
They are trying to get all the people who don 't have active accounts to get back into the game. The hope that the changes will encourage them to reactivate their account.
