I personaly would go for either a R/N or a R/Mo.I have a R/Mo and the ranger part is very useful for sniping enimies off at a distance and the monk is useful for healing if you get to close. I would not, however, recommend a ranger monk for farming. Alhough they are good for staying alive, they are very slow at killing. A ranger necromancer would be better but still not good for farming. It all depends on wha you want to do.

For a general build, anything using barrage, with some interupts and either monk skills for staying alive, or mesmer skills for disrupt/degen or the inspiration stances
For farming, i have found Underworld and tomb of the primeval kings to be effective means of farming, i usually rake in 2.5k or so with gold and selling my drops per run(runs take 30 minutes or so in either place), and once in awhile ill get an ectos or something nice out of a chest, and a decent priced green out of the tombs
http://guildwars.gameamp.com/guide/viewGui...45.php!orderBy= this is a guide for tombs, and will tell you everything you need to know
http://guildwars.gameamp.com/guide/viewGui...32.php!orderBy= and this will tell you what you need to know for trapping uw
hope these guides helped, and enjoy

eh...i see many rangers using barrage but i think it's useless if your the only one in the team using it. just my opinion.
i personally like playing the role of an interupt ranger with punishing shot, not barrage.
1. dual shot
2. punishing shot [e]
3. savage shot
4. distracting shot
5. read the wind
6. whirling defense
7. troll urgent
8. res
i know this the same exact build as ranger spike but it does well for interupt too.

With my ranger I go one of two ways; trapper or I use poison arrow and my secondary being a mesmer for the degen. Degen rocks.

Whirling defense
troll unguent
res sig

Been a while since i posted but I'm back! In any case, my favorite build that i use everywhere in Tyria (with the exception of pvp since i dont pvp, and b/p groups) to solo almost anything form hydras to FoW is:
Ranger/Mesmer
Poison Arrow
Distracting Shot
Troll Ungent
Throw Dirt
Read the Wind
Favorable Winds
Storm Chaser
Mantra of Fire (depends on the element im fightuing against)
This is basically a degen run away build that keeps you moving and is really fun to do. I usually have Drakescale armor for fire elemental protection for FoW and Hydra solo runs.
Practice against Hydras, and when you can take 3 - 4 at one time you can move to FoW.

Why yes, it's just that obvious Ross.

My favorite build atm is interupting.
I just love when the spellcasters are struggling and trying to cast spells and keep getting interupted.
At moments like those I am feeling very happy to be a ranger.
....
What?!? ow yeah the build.
Broad head arrow, savage shot, distraction shot, read the wind, Whirling defence, troll ungment , 2 empty spaces for you r own choice.
The trick is to first attack the enemey so he wont dodge/stray broad head arrow. If the spellcasters stands stil hes all your to become dazed .
P.S this obviously only works good in pve.

like jack snakeskin, I like an interupt build but have thre or four diff versions where I throw in a degen or two. I have a r/mes and like poison arrow (elite) and phantasm together with a couple of interupts, both ranger and mesmer skills,, n never leave home without leechsig if you are interupting lol.
for defence I find whirling defence and troll urgent are more than enough ;)
edit = ps: I like 13 marksmanship as there is where rangers start dealing good damage on normal shots with crits.

1. Kindle Arrow or ignite arrow
2. Storm Chaser
3. Dual shot
4. Precision Shot
5. Power Shot
6. Savage Shot
7. Markman's Wager(E) or Poison Arrow(E)
8. Troll Unguent
Depending on the group i'm in and if we have one monk, these are the skills i sub-in for 5 & 8.
5. Heal Party or Heal Area
8. Restore Life or Rebirth
This is the skill setup i use for PvE when im using henchmens and when i'm in a group with other players.
As for PvP, i dont really know if this skill setup would work since i really havent got into PvP yet.

Ranger Solo'ing build
With this build I'm currently able to solo Mino's, Griffons and other creatures of equivalent level and down (ettins etc..) but still un-able to get Trolls cleanly..currently in the tweaking process
Anyway..heres the build
R/Mo (both attribute quests)
Healing Prayers: 10
Wilderness Survival: 7 + 1
Expertise: 9 + 1
Marksmanship: 10 + 3 + 1
(I think that's the stats..might be off by one or two )
Skills:
Barrage [Elite] Bow attack, shoot up to 6 arrows into a group of enemies
Throw Dirt: Skill, throw dirt into the eyes of target foe and adjacent enemies, blinding for 12 seconds.
Lightning Reflexes: Attack 33% Faster, 75% chance to avoid attacks
Whirling Defense: 75% Chance to avoid attacks, ranged attacks blocked deal 9 dmg to the attacker
Dryders Defense: 75% Chance to avoid attacks again, once this has run out, throw dirt should be recharged.
Troll Unguent: Health Regeneration +6
Vigorous Spirit: Each time you attack/cast a spell you gain +15 Health
Live Vicariously: Enchantment. Lose one pip of energy regen, continuous enchantment, each time ally hits with an attack gain +12 Health.
I'm guessing most of you can assume how this goes..lol. Run in, cast live vicariously, get close to your targets, cast vigorous spirit, aggro up to 6 mobs, bunch them tightly, cast throw dirt, start spamming Barrage, once throw dirt wears off, cast lightning relfexes, once that wears off, cast whirling defense, then cast dryders, then throw dirt etc.. recast vigorous spirit if necessary. Mobs should be dead by the end of this sequence. Continue spamming Barrage throughout.
Armor: Max Defense druids, with a superior marksmanship rune, and as big a Vigor as you can, and the other necessary minors
Weapon: I prefer a zealous shortbow, as it attacks fastest, and keeps your energy up the entire time. Preferably with a 15^50 inherent mod, and customized for the extra damage. Hope this helps out those rangers (like i used to be) who seem to not be able to make any cash killing things
Note: It's not quite as easy when your only fighting 1-2 enemies..as the zealous doesn't keep your energy up as high, i guess im trying to say, it takes a little longer..hah.
EDIT: Can do Griffons now. Btw, all the defenses are needed as if you dont have one up, each hit from these mobs does 50+ dmg, making you die very fast, and yes, troll can be swapped with something, but I'm yet to find a useful skill that doesn't use up all that precious Barraging energy. (trid judges insight etc..)

Is this exclusively a farming build? It seems that its lacking a lot of damage. Thats a lot of heavy duty heal/defense spells you got there. I would suggest taking out something like troll, which has a pretty huge casting time and replace it with a spirit like Favorable Winds, Winter, or something that fits the situation.
You might also try a trap like flame trap. Great thing about it is it usually cause the monsters around you to flee for a few seconds, giving some breathing room. Its dmg is also not bad.
just my 2c

Well It may differ a skil or 2 from a ranger solo build that I have been using but with those skills it is possible. Trust me (says someone without credit)

Wow, nobody has mentioned a Beastmastery build yet. :P
Well, here goes:
Beastmaster:
Beastmastery: 15
Expertise: 9
Wilderness Survival: 9 or so, depending on runes
Marksmanship: 9
Poisonous Bite (or) Kindle Arrows (or) Apply Poison
Melandru's Assault
Ferocious Strike (or) Enraged Lunge
Brutal Strike (or) Troll Unguent
Call of Protection
Comfort Animal
Charm Animal
Res
Pretty straightforward. Your pet is in no danger of death unless it's spiked or the last one alive. Use a Longbow/Flatbow to show the pet it's target.
It's also fun to put other attacks in there, some knockdown a caster if it's casting. Then another dazes the target if he/she's knocked down.
